Stefano Passerini Research and Teaching Experience

Research Experience

My research activities have been directed towards the understanding and the characterization of materials and devices of interest for energy storage and conversion and electrochemical sensors.

My expertise and background are principally in the electrochemistry field, with a strong background in physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry. Essentially, the activities can be divided in two main fields: - Energy Storage & Conversion:

- Electrochemical characterization of polymer electrolytes; - Electrochemical characterization of inorganic insertion materials; - Development of lithium and lithium-ion batteries as well as electrochemical capacitors (ultracapacitors); - Development of electrochromic devices; - Photoelectrochemistry of thin oxide films.

- Materials Synthesis and Preparation

- Synthesis and characterization of pillared amorphous materials by sol-gel processing; - Nano-composites; - Ionic liquids.

Further activities focused on the realization and the characterization of electrochemical sensors for environmental and medical applications. Work on photovoltaic devices has also been performed. Technical Experience

Present Activities Advanced batteries are the precondition for the wider use of renewable energies, such

as wind and photovoltaic energies, as well as for application in energy efficient hybrid and pure electric vehicles.

My present activities are focused to the development of electrochemical energy materials and the understanding of the electronic and ionic conduction mechanisms in such materials. Activities are also performed toward the development of electrochemical energy storage devices (batteries and supercapacitors).

In more details, the development of solid ionic conductors is focused on the use of room temperature molten salts (ionic liquids) to enhance the lithium ion mobility in polymer electrolytes. Presently, the activities are oriented toward the full understanding of the lithium ion mobility enhancement via impedance spectroscopy, galvanometry, potentiometry and NMR.

Room temperature molten salts are also investigated as solvents for the realization of lithium ion conducting liquid electrolytes. Interest in these materials arises from their non-volatility and non-flammability. In this field, activities are mostly focused on tailoring the chemical structure of the ionic liquid to provide higher lithium ion mobility. Preliminary activities in the field of polyvalent cation ionic conductors, such as Mg2+ ion conductors are also conducted.

The development of mixed (ionic-electronic) conductors capable of storing monovalent cations such as Li+ and Na+, for application as active materials in lithium and sodium batteries is also in the main focus. Of particular interest are the activities focused on the development of percolating networks of nanometric oxides and carbon, in order to combine the lithium insertion properties of the oxides with the high electron transport capacity of carbonaceous matrices.

Finally, the developed knowledge and new materials are used to implement novel electrochemical storage devices such Li/Air and Li/S batteries as well as safer and greener Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors.
