THE ERP PROJECT

Essar Steel is spending a mammoth Rs.20 crore on its SAP R/3 implementation with the other IT and consultancy requirement.

Thus making it the largest (size and price) ERP project in India.

Since this ERP project was of strategic importance, it was decided that this project would be completely controlled by the top management.

Essar Steel signed up with SAP for a 1000-user license to begin with, and this number was expected to go up to 2000 to 2500 users within a few years.

These users were spread over 20 different sites.

The modules implemented for ESSAR STEEL were finance, asset management, product planning, plant maintenance, sales and distribution and quality management control.

WHY ERP?

ESSAR has always deployed the latest technology in every area and the demand for IT services was huge.

To produce high quality steel with the best ingredients, the company felt the need for an integrated information system.

Since the ERP concept was accepted by the industry, it had become a compulsory addition.

Specifically, with SAP they would save on implementation time and would be deploying a PROVEN software which Fortune 500 companies use.

The company claimed that the Rs.20 crore investment would be recovered within one year.

WHY SAP?

POST ERP IMPLEMENTATION

Time for delivery and procurement of materials and products was shortened.

Inventory carrying cost was reduced. Improved decision-making was possible.

Plant operations were optimized-in terms of manpower and finance.

Reduced Quality Cost. Data was transparent and accurate (up-

to-date).
