Transcript of STEAM Rocket Challenge! Kids’ Club Lesson...
Kids’ Club Lesson Plan
● Objective: Students will collaborate in groups to see who can build the tallest free-standing rocket.
● Lesson: STEAM Rocket Challenge!
● Materials: Newspapers, Masking Tape, Ruler or Yardstick/Meter Stick
● Greeting: Teachers should meet students at the door and greet each student by mirroring their favorite dance move.
● Warm-Up: Opening discussion question: If you were going to the moon, and you could only take one thing, what would it be?
● Main Lesson: Teachers will explain to students that they will be creating a rocketship in small groups using only newspaper and tape. Review the last lesson on collaboration and discuss the following:
* work well with other members of the group(what does that mean or what does that look like when you’re working with a group? etc.) * contribute equally and fairly and invite others in the group to contribute
*commit to a group goal and encourage each other toward achievement of the goal *settle disagreements and come to a consensus without hurting others’ feelings
● The object of the rocketship challenge is to see
which group can create the tallest free-standing ship within 10-15 minutes (depending on the available time).
1. Divide students in groups. 2. Supply newspaper and tape. 3. Allow students 10-15 minutes to
complete. 4. Measure each rocket to determine
winning group. 5. Discussion- How well did your team
collaborate? What kinds of problems did you face and how did you persevere? Was your design successful? What would you change about your design? Etc.
● Optional End Activity: Allow students to return
to models to correct any problems/errors in their original design. Refer to engineering process.
