STAY WITH…RAISE UP…SEND OUT… What does that mean? Stay with…. Now is a time to “stay with” in a totally unexpected way. For those of you who may not be aware, I had surgery on my right ankle on September. The surgery was more difficult and more extensive than first thought. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to explain my condition and what it means to our ministry together. Apparently, sometime in January or February I tripped and injured my right foot. The pain increased both in intensity and frequency as the months went by. In April it was diagnosed as a stress fracture of the bone on the outside edge of the foot. I wore a special boot for 2 months, which gave time for the bone to heal completely. However, the summer activities did not give me much time to rest the tendon that is attached to that bone. Hence the ten- don never healed from the stress and got progressively worse; an MRI revealed severe inflammation and damage to the “peroneous tendon” in the right foot. In the drawing, it is the shorter white strip from the side of the foot around the ankle. The damage indicated surgery was necessary. I had the surgery on September 4th. I was under the assumption this might mean a 3-4 week limitation in my ministry, with doing mostly sedentary work (writing, meetings, reading, planning, phone calls, etc.). Also, since it is my RIGHT foot, I am not able to drive a car. I figured this would not be much trouble for the short term of a few weeks. However, the surgery was more difficult. The tendon damage was more than even the MRI revealed. Also I was born with a nerve that covered the tendon, hence the movement of the nerve created a much more painful recovery. I learned this week (as I write this) that the progress to heal will be slower than ini- tially thought. I am now in a hard cast, until about October 1 and am using crutches with wheelchair assist in certain situations. October will be the month gradually to put my weight on the foot, with the goal of November 1 for full weight pressure. Stay with…. Now is a time to “stay with” in a totally unexpected

way. For those of you who may not be aware, I had surgery on my

right ankle on September. The surgery was more difficult and more

extensive than first thought. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to

explain my condition and what it means to our ministry together.

Apparently, sometime in January or February I tripped and injured my right foot. The

pain increased both in intensity and frequency as the months went by. In April it was

diagnosed as a stress fracture of the bone on the outside edge of the foot. I wore a

special boot for 2 months, which gave time for the bone to heal

completely. However, the summer activities did not give me much

time to rest the tendon that is attached to that bone. Hence the ten-

don never healed from the stress and got progressively worse; an

MRI revealed severe inflammation and damage to the “peroneous

tendon” in the right foot. In the drawing, it is the shorter white

strip from the side of the foot around the ankle. The damage indicated surgery was

necessary. I had the surgery on September 4th.

I was under the assumption this might mean a 3-4 week limitation in

my ministry, with doing mostly sedentary work (writing, meetings,

reading, planning, phone calls, etc.). Also, since it is my RIGHT foot, I

am not able to drive a car. I figured this would not be much trouble for

the short term of a few weeks.

However, the surgery was more difficult. The tendon damage was

more than even the MRI revealed. Also I was born with a nerve that

covered the tendon, hence the movement of the nerve created a much more painful

recovery.

I learned this week (as I write this) that the progress to heal will be slower than ini-

tially thought. I am now in a hard cast, until about October 1 and am using crutches

with wheelchair assist in certain situations. October will be the month gradually to

put my weight on the foot, with the goal of November 1 for full weight pressure. No-

vember will be a month to give therapy to the muscles and tendons to resume normal

foot activity. I will not be given permission to drive a car until that therapy is com-

M E S S A G E F R O M P A S T O R S A Y L O R , C O N T ’ D

The surgery impacts my ministry in a few ways: walking and driving, acts that I have taken for a long

time.

HERE IS WHAT I CAN STILL DO:

I can still perform most pastoral care issues. Hence, it is still extremely important that if there is a pas-

toral need or issue (hospital admission, emergency, urgent homebound communion, or counseling), I

will be able to arrange getting to the situation. I have drivers whom I can call upon to get where I need

to go.

I can still lead worship, but it will change slightly since we will be having communion distribution from

the level floor until I am able both to manage the steps in the chancel and to walk around the narrow

area around the altar.

I can still attend meetings and provide the usual pastoral leadership. I may be slow getting around the

office, since it involves steps to get up to the office area, where the copier is.

MY LIMITATIONS ARE:

Getting to the office on a daily basis: I am not able at this writing to walk on crutches from the parson-

age to the church. The front steps pose a fall danger. The driveway exits to loose gravel and is also too

dangerous to risk. Hence, I actually have to have someone drive me from the parsonage 150 feet to the

church. Hence, I will be doing a great majority of my “desk work” from home with the office laptop

and using my cellphone for calls, etc. However, when I have appointments, I can DEFINITELY arrange

to be there or ask the person to come to my temporary home office (dining room—I can make the cof-

fee!).

Response time: Arranging transportation requires me to depend on the availability of volunteers and

family. I only ask that we (including me) are patient and understanding about this. I will do my very

best to respond to any need or situation, as able.

A few people have offered to provide transportation for me to meet your ministry needs. THANKS BE

TO GOD for them!

It is my earnest desire to resume normal parish activity immediately, but that is NOT REALITY. I must

obey the doctor’s orders for the resting of the tendon so that it can heal. Attempting to do too much will

only delay recovery. I need to get off my foot several times a day and raise it higher than my heart (of

course, this means laying down). This part is very frustrating. I have been a hard worker all my life and

slowing down and resting have not been in my vocabulary. Now they MUST be for a few months and

maybe this will be a good time to learn to pace my scheduling.

This is a special time for the congregation, to consider how to be a partner in your ministry.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

I ask you to “stay with” me in prayer and support.

Perhaps you can drive for me.

Perhaps you know someone else who can drive on a minute’s notice.

Perhaps you can help me manage carrying things since that is not possible when I am on crutches.

I am blessed already with much understanding from church people, especially our secretary Heidi, who

has been more than capable of managing the issues of a busy office.

I am blessed with a loving wife and children who have been incredibly patient with me at home, needing

help with just about every facet of life. I want you to pray for their strength and patience.

Ralley Day offered a fun way for the children’s Sunday school teachers to dress up and have a quiz the kids game!

Many thanks to Jen Vicheck, Christian Education Leader, for organizing this wonderful kick off to start our 2013-

2014 Sunday School year! The kids did an awesome job at guessing the mystery guests: Christ Barnhart (Noah),

Heidi Beahm (Abraham), Colleen Prenovitz (Moses), Robin Van Dyke (Mary), Amy Anthony (Jesus). Many thanks

to all of our wonderful teachers who have proven they will go to extremes (ha ha ha) to help our kids learn more

about God’s word!

M a n n a n i g h t h a p p e n i n g s !

Manna Night got going again for another season of spreading God’s word and work

in our community.

Our first day was September 11th, so we spent much of the time helping kids under-

stand how helpful we can be when bad things happen.

Night Manager Patti Flach brought a few books to read to the children and engage

them in conversation. Crafts and games rounded out a fun evening. We were so

pleased to welcome over 20 children this first night!

We are also very pleased to have a strong support of more helpers at the program,

with commitments from many to be there weekly.

On September 18th, we got focused on mission work with a Power Point presentation

on the mission trip to Ocean City and Delaware. The pictures showed the youth how

it can be so meaningful to reach out to help others. We hope to inspire them to

want to join a trip in the future.

In weeks to come, we will be using new curriculum materials from Augsburg Fortress

that are perfect for a mid-week program. The material is called “Holy Moly” and in-

cludes a weekly DVD quick silent movie that leaves kids of all ages opportunity to “fill

in” the words and explain the actions and motives in the story.

For the sake of these children, many of whom know no church home, we thank all

our helpers and also Thrivent Financial for the community service grant that makes

this all possible!

For tieing for first place in the 2013 Oktoberfest parade division of floats. This years theme

was based on Johah’s “Big Fish” due to their Super Bible Bowl Victory. We provided the theme

and God provided plenty of water that day. (There is a blessing in all things right?) Many

thanks to everyone who support the youth here at St. Peter’s and for all of your efforts to

make this prize winning float possible! Congratulations again to our youth here at St.

Peter’s!

Friends in Christ… Ministry from and to seniors since 1992!

Friends in Christ , like other ministries Christ’s Church, is changing to meet the needs of changing commu-

not required to bring a covered dish, but it’s nice if you can. You may bring your own serving dishes, but usu-

The Energy Challenge

A couple of Sundays ago, I told the congregation a story about ten friends who had a wonderful plan to enjoy each others company each week by having lunch together. Unfortunately, the plan fell apart because the friends refused to pay enough to have an adequate lunch. They went home hungry and soon didn’t come at all. The wonderful plan fell apart and they rarely saw each other after that. Why? Because they didn’t feed themselves. They could have fed themselves – simple- just put in a few more dollars.

When I chaired the congregational meeting last November, I witnessed a divided body passing a budget that did not adequately fund the minimal missions that it sponsored, and many begrudged token pay increases for the paid staff. If any of you has spent time in the larger business world on the larger church you’ll understand that our staff is not overpaid. I thought to myself – these people of God in my community are going home hungry. It’s not just that they don’t offer enough money to pay the bills; it’s that hundreds of them don’t come to church to hear the good new; it’s that most of the good works and missions of the church are huddled in committees of two or three volunteers. (God bless them). What is feeding these people spiritually? Jesus is the light and if you aren’t moving toward the light you are in the dark and cold and hungry- spiritually.

So, Jesus called me to start the Energy Team, the first standing stewardship committee in St Peter’s for many years. I was gratified to see so many volunteers for it, indicating that many others shared my concerns. Our approach to stewardship has always been – take care of the neighbor. We started the Good Samaritan list of volunteers and the small group tribes. Neither idea has yet gained much traction or acceptance, but give them a chance. Now we have started the Prying, Praising, Proclaiming Christ Campaign. Again, it is focused on feeding you spiritually. No committees bang-ing on your door to ask “how much are you gonna give?” What do we want you to do?

Pray – sit down with your Lord and ask him what further commitment that it will take to feed you spiritually. Can I tithe with my time? Can I tithe with my wealth? Can I soften my heart to help those in need? Thank the Lord for your abundance. Encourage prayers at meals.

Praise- come to church. Every Week. To Special Services. Sing in the choir. Sin in your pew. Donate flow-ers to the altar. Plant flowers outside the church in the spring. Act in your family and job and com-munity as though you belong to Christ. Stir the apple butter.

Proclaim – Take a neighbor to church. Speak p when someone uses words of hate instead of words of love. Help in the food cupboard. Act as though you belong to Christ. Help at Manna Night. Write thank you notes and get well cards.

I have never wanted to be “stewardship.” I hate asking people for money even for charitable causes. I was not a good example of good stewardship in my years at St. Peter’s. But it is different asking people for money for charity than pointing out to people that their lack of action is causing the very things that they fervently believe in to crumble to unimportance or to disappear altogether. Christ’s directive was not “Do no harm.” It was “feed my flock,” “Love thy neighbor.” Unfortunately, Christians have to do something. How much is enough?

Yours in Christ,

Charlie Flach, Energy Team

PS- I absolutely promise that the Lord will “feed” you and make you feel great!

If you have not seen this image before, let me tellyou that it represents how the Gospel of Jesus is a Word about a con-stantly creating God and a never-ending movement of the Holy Spirit, yet a message that never changes: Jesus Christ, Son of God, died for your sins to give you new life.

New Life? Let’s look at what’s happening!! If you have submissions or suggestions that reflect the moving of the Spirit, please let Pastor or Heidi know and we will be glad to share it with others, right here in this newsletter (or, even better, at worship some Sunday).

Lutheran Lay Renewal is COMING BACK!! MARCH 7-9, 2014.

We will be recruiting team leaders in the next few months to get an early start!!

THEOLOGY ON TAP Bring your own beverage and… your own Questions and Doubts, too!!
