STAY SAFE AROUNDNATURAL GAS

n Maintain customer-owned gas piping, beyondthe gas meter, such as lines to pool heaters,hot tubs and gas-powered grills. To avoidpotential hazards, have a qualified contractorperiodically inspect buried fuel lines for leaksand corrosion. If an unsafe condition ispresent, service should be shut off until repairsare made.

n Keep the area around your furnace and waterheater clear and free from stored items suchas gasoline, paints, paint strippers, bleach,adhesives and other flammable liquids, salt formelting ice, fabric or water softener, boxes,magazines or books.

How do I recognize a problem and what should I do about it?

n Look for spots of dead vegetation on theground, dirt blowing and bubbles in standingwater, which could indicate a leak.

n Listen for unusual noises such as hissing orroaring from the ground, a pipe, a nearbypipeline marker or a utility meter, all of whichcould indicate a leak.

n Be sensitive to any unusual, foul or strongsmell, which could also indicate a natural gasleak. The smell is a harmless chemical we addto natural gas so you can detect the smallestamount of gas that might have escaped. Ifyou think you smell gas, evacuate your homeor business immediately. Do not light a match,switch electronics on or off or use thetelephone. Leave the area and then call usimmediately.

How do I know if there are natural gas pipelinesnearby?

n Buried, unmarked utility equipment, includingnatural gas pipelines, exists beneath themajority of urban and suburban streets andproperties. In more rural areas, look foryellow, black and red warning markers thatare posted along rural pipeline rights-of-way.These markers include vital information aboutthe type of pipeline and specific hazards inthat area. While the markers along ruralpipeline rights-of-way are helpful indicators,they do not mark the exact location or depthof the pipeline.

n As part of the National Pipeline MappingSystem, you may call 302-429-3099 todetermine if there are Delmarva Power naturalgas transmission pipelines near you. Due tosafety and securityconsiderations, youmay be required toprovide proof ofidentification and/orthe reason for yourinquiry.

n Regardless of whethera pipeline is marked oryou believe you knowthe location of anatural gas line, alwayscall Miss Utility at 8-1-1 to markunderground lines,including natural gaspipelines, beforeconducting anyexcavation or digging.

How can I help prevent natural gas accidents from happening?

n Keep your utility meter clear of obstructions.Never attach anything to the gas meter orpiping. Never tamper with natural gas lines orequipment.

n Call 8-1-1 before you dig. Remember that yourproperty may have utility lines and natural gaslines running not too far beneath the ground’ssurface--in some instances, it may be closeenough to hit with a shovel. Hitting a line couldrupture the natural gas line, interrupt service,and even cause serious injury to you or yourneighbors. In addition, you would be financiallyresponsible for repairs to correct any damage tounderground lines.

n Be careful when clearing snow and ice fromaround your gas meter; any damage to themeter could potentially create a possible leakhazard. Protect your meter from snow blowersand snow plows. Do not allow snow to pile upagainst your gas meter.

n Make sure to have all furnaces, flues andchimneys inspected every year by qualifiedindustry professionals to ensure their efficiencyand safety.
