By the end of today’s workshop, you will be able to:

Find an impact factor of a particular journal

Find top journals with impact factors in your discipline

Find the most recent articles published on your research topic

Find the top cited articles for your research topic

Set up an email alert to stay updated on new articles published on your research topic

Find your (or other researchers’) h-index

Set up an email alert to know when your articles get cited

What is impact factor of a journal? An indicator reflecting the research impact of a

particular journal based on the average number of citations to articles published in this journal in the last two years

Is calculated annually, last edition in 2012Devised by Eugene Garfield, the founder of

the Institute for Scientific Information, in 1960Varies across disciplinesExample for Nature Methods:

What is h-index?Measures the productivity and impact of a scientist

(sometimes, a group of scientists, a department, a university)

Devised by Jorge Hirsch, a physicist at UCSD, in 2005

Based on the number of published papers and the number of citations that they have received

H-index of 3 means that at least 3 of the scientist’s papers have been cited at least 3 times each

Varies across disciplines

Working with Web of Science, contd.Author: Laurie Leshin, Dean of the School of

Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, multidisciplinary research in science, most recently working with Curiosity Mars RoverFind publications by this author if Web of

Getting the name rightSearch with last name and initial(s), not the

full nameGrotzingerJP vs Grotzinger John

For names not originally in the Roman alphabet: check the spelling!Yelikov OR ElibekovKamzebayeva OR KamzebaevaKhalelov OR Halelov

When publishing, try to use the same spelling for all your publications

Narrow down the results by author’s initials, country, institution affiliation

Page 21: Stay current, know your impact

Now you can look up the author’s h-index!
