Until ITER starts: JET still has significant technical capabilities which can be used to prepare for ITER operationOn short-term (2005/2006), JETs scientific capabilities are being extended, with construction of: ITER-like antenna and new plasma diagnostics
JETs key components (vacuum vessel, magnets) havenot been used for more than 15% of their fatigue lifetime, although regular maintenance is needed on auxiliaries
On longer term (2007-2010), JET can be used: to develop further operating scenarios in conditions closest to those of ITER;to optimise more ITER auxiliaries
Requires ITER-like wall conditions and increased heating power
-
ITER-like wall experiment on JETOnly JET can prepare ITER operation with the relevant materials combination
Fig. 1(a) ITER primary materials choice backup solution is all tungsten
Fig. 1(b) JET first priority is to test an all W divertor matches ITER back-up or second phase option.
Fig. 1(c) JET second choice match to ITER primary choice the issue of W coating of the LBSRP is however open.

ITER will operate with transient loads near (ELMs) and beyond (disruptions) material damage thresholds
JET just reaches this regime with DWELM ~ 1 MJ ELMs ELMs have to be mitigated Methods of mitigation - natural (Type-II, EDA, Grassy, Type-III, QH,) - externally imposed (pellets, impurity seeding, perturbation coils,...)

Proposed JET Programme in Support of ITER
2005-2007Strong focus on preparing ITER detailed design and ITER exploitation, including the commissioning and initial operation of an ITER-like ICRH antenna and preparation for proposed changes of wall/divertor materials and increased heating power Installation & exploitation of JET-EP enhancements, including diagnostics
2008 ShutdownInstallation of major new capabilities ITER-like wall NB power upgrade High frequency pellet injector Diagnostics Other small enhancements (tbd)
EFDA Steering Committee approved first three
Experimentation in 2009-2010

Conclusions JETs programme is focused on the preparation of ITER operation, building on significant progress in the development of plasma scenarios and in physics.
The scientific capability of the device is being improved significantly this year and next year (heating, diagnostics, divertor).
A programme based on an ITER-like wall and increased heating power is being prepared for 2007 and beyond (FP7). EFDA Steering Committee recently approved ITER-like wall, Neutral Beam and Pellet projects. Diagnostic proposals still under elaboration. Other possible proposals being defined.
A new pellet injection setup for injection from the magnetic highfield side is currently under construction a JET. Additionally, steps are taken to bring a new vertical high speed launcher intooperation. Chracterisation and comparison of all availableinjection setups (LFS, HFS, new HFS = HFS*, vertical) withrespect to penetration as well as performance will thereforebecome necessary.
Investigate mass deposition from vertical injection of pellets onJET and investigate tritium particle transport after injected intoplasmas with trace tritium pellets.
Interesting scenarios have been developed in the last campaigns, allowing to reach high density at high confinement with HFS pelletinjection. This will be further explored in C6-C8, with in addition fromC6 on the possibility to use a new HFS track allowing much higher pelletlaunch velocities as before. These discharges are good targets for TTexperiments, and can give us important information on the relativeefficiency of T gas and pellet fuelling.Make a link with Andreanis presentation on the preparation of industryinsist on the complexity of the shutdown : not only EP but also refurbishmentremote handling is a key feature of this shutdown. JET system is very specific and very advancedas we speak, the divertor tiles are being removed frm the vessel and put into the BHFon the management point of view, even very experienced and trained teams and companies have difficulties in meeting the very tight target under the strict QA requirements and tight time schedule. JET-EP is a very good experience for ITER future work, although on a smaller scale.
