Population

All of the members of a group which you want to draw a conclusion.

(i.e. Women in the army)

Sample

The part of the population selected for analysis.

(i.e. Women in the army stationed in Iraq)

Parameter

A numerical measure that describes a characteristic of the population.

(i.e. The percentage of women with children in the army)

Statistic

A numerical measure that describes a characteristic of a sample.

(i.e. The percentage of women with children in the army who have completed a tour of duty in Iraq)

Variable

A characteristic of an item or an individual that will be analyzed using statistics.• Discrete values• Continuous values

(i.e. The number of women with children in the army who have completed a tour of duty in Iraq that have been injured)

Descriptive Statistics is the branch of statistics that focuses on collecting , summarizing and presenting data.

Inferential Statistics

Inferential Statistics is the branch of statistics that analyzes sample data to draw conclusions about a population.
