PREFACEWelcome to the twelfth edition of State-X New Forms. Twelve. A dozen. Twelve hours on a clock. Twelve months in a year. Twelve years a slave to the rhythm. We at State-X New Forms do not like to be predictable. Always searching to boldly go where no one has gone before. Our logical progression over the years past has brought us on a path where not only the festival itself but also the performances are becoming less and less predictable.

If there is one musical theme popping up to the front this year it is musical improvisation and freedom on stage. A lot of you out there might call this jazz or progressive rock or even fusion but we prefer to call it adventurous music. We have the musical explorers of the Snarky Puppy family (with keyboardplayers Cory Henry and Bill Laurance among them) at the core of the program. The European influence on investigative music becomes manifest with acts from Switzerland (Plaistow, Diatribes), Scandinavia (Anna von Hausswolff, Elephant9, Humcrush, Jakob Bro), Germany (Irmler & Liebezeit), Belgium (STUFF., Black Heart Rebellion) and Italy/Austria (Ozmotic feat. Fennesz) and takes us even to Israel (Tatran, Avishai Cohen) and Africa (Ukandanz, Umeme, Bachar Mar Khalifé).

We are really proud to present the first ever Dutch performance of the founding fathers of American punk and new wave Rocket From The Tombs (the band that spawned The Dead Boys and Pere Ubu) and even David Bowie is featured in this year’s line-up with his Black Star band-members Mark Guiliana and Jason LiNdner playing on Saturday and the performance ‘I Am David Bowie’ by local artists Sis Josip and Charlotte van Winden on Friday.

Which brings us to the obvious: of course State-X New Forms will feature the most exciting new artists out of the local scene. Without the local support we would be nothing. Thanks everybody for helping us out once again. Enjoy your trip down the state of musical experimentation and the discovery of new forms of music. At first it might hurt a little, but the pleasure afterwards will be worth the while.

Alcuna WildsDate Friday December 11Time 20.45-21.30Location lounge The Hague based Alcuna Wilds creates atmospheric, electronic-infused indie music. Ambient guitar soundscapes, strong melodic riffs, deep bass and driving beats underpin rich, melancholic vocals. Recentely the band recorded and released the single ‘Suburban Noir’, a track filled with beautiful vocals and instrumentals reminiscent of Portishead and Daughter.

Anna von HausswolffDate Friday December 11Time 20.00-21.00Location Paard van Troje, Small The Swedish singer and organist Anna Von Hausswolff impressed the world with her dark gothic thinged songs. At times her expressive voice reminds of Kate Bush. In combination with her dramatic pianospiel, her songs are like dark monuments, moving from expansive gothed-out soundscapes to tender intimacy to sludgy doom metal. Otherwordly & impressive.

Avishai Cohen The Big ViciousDate Saturday December 12Time 23.30-01.00Location Paard van Troje, Main Trumpeter Avishai Cohen has developed into one of the leading contemporary jazz trumpeters. His performances are full of play and adventure, built upon raw yet vibrant dynamics, commanded by Cohens’ penetrating melodic voice on trumpet. For State-X New Forms Cohen brings in an exclusive one-off concert of his high-energy group The Big Vicious, consisting of a mirrored setup of two guitarists and two drummers. The sound is best described as a mix of composed motives, psychadelica, grooves and improvisations resulting in vicious experimental jazz with a wink to the likes of Black Sabbath and the Live Evil album of Miles Davis’ classic Bitches Brew.

Contemporary electronic sounds by keyboard artist Federico Solazzo, the masterly art of Rogier Schneemann’s guitar performance and the exceptionally tight rhythm section of bassist Luciano Poli and drummer David Barker are sure to deliver a impressive spectacle, including a climax full of surprising vocals.

Bachar Mar-KhalifÉDate Saturday December 12Time 00.15-01.00Location Prins27 The Lebanon-born singer-composer uses a combination of percussion, piano, choirs and synths to create a mystic atmosphere where Western and Arabic influences alternate. Bachar was trained as a percussionist, and taught himself the piano. It is these piano compositions that stand out as adventurous and enlightning. With Bachar’s percussion background shining through, his songs breath the freedom of a young, boundless musician.

Bill Laurance ProjectDate Friday December 11Time 20.15-21.15Location Paard van Troje, Main As an original member of Snarky Puppy, Grammy Award winning British pianist and keyboardplayer Bill Laurance also has his own outfit, ‘The Bill Laurance project’. In this set up he brings together classical and jazz in a brilliantly original and exciting new context, blending it with funk grooves and improv. on his newest album Aftersun to be released in 2016 he even infuses this adventerous mix with strong African rhythms and grooves. On SXNF, there will be a world premiere of this new material.

Bing & RuthDate Friday December 11Time 20.30-21.15Location Prins27 Bing & Ruth is a New York-based minimalist ensemble led by pianist/composer David Moore. Influenced by composers like Arvo Pärt and Steve Reich, their music is often slow to develop and ranges from distant, crystalline ambience to massive, glowing crescendos. Instrumentally, they employ everything from strings, wind instruments, and voice to lap steel, drums, and tape manipulations. For fans of Nils Frahm and Sufjan Stevens a show not to be missed.

This Belgian five-piece treads the dusty ground between doom, post-rock, tribal beats, ritual percussion and ambient. Their affiliation with The Church of Ra (founded by cult-mastodon Amenra) makes sense when listening to their tense, expansive compositions. The music is an exercise in desolation and restraint, where a suffocating darkness is lit up by fascinatingly unique, apocalyptic folk tales that reach further than just being songs: they are a ritualistic experience.

Cory HenryDate Saturday December 12Time 00.30-01.15Location Paard van Troje, Small Cory Henry is a grammy-winning multi instrumentalist and member of the Snarky Puppy family. In his solo project he captures the breath of the Jazz and Gospel idioms and produces something altogether new, marking it with the virtuozo unpredictability of Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson. In 2016 his new album “The Revival” will be released, and on SXNF’15 Cory will perform ‘The Revival’ album. So get ready for an exclusive preview ánd internationale premiere of ‘The Revival’.

The two members Cyril Bondi and d’Incise work in the field of improvisation, exploring free jazz, noise, musique concrête and free improv, and have chosen to focus on a rather introverted process of creation.

The word-artist called Dichter comes from the Rotterdam hiphop scene a where he gained the nickname ‘The Dutch Talib Kweli’. He recently released his album ‘Nieuw Leven’, for wich he got several visual artists to produce special artwork for each of the songs.

At SXNF Dichter will not only perform, but also curate a special all evening-exhibition featuring these artworks.

DVADate Friday December 11Time 00.15-01.00Location Prins27 Operating in their own microcosmos, DVA is one of the most successful Czech bands in the last decade. The duo produces– “pop for non-existing radios” or “folklore of non-existing nations”, as they say. Their lyrics are written in an imaginary language and remain abstruse, yet universally comprehensible, while the music is an aural collage of pop, kitchen beatbox, tango, cabaret, circus and radio noise.

Norwegian supergroup Elephant9, consisting of keyboardist Ståle Storløkken (Supersilent), bassist Nikolai Eilertsen (National Bank) and drummer Torstein Lofthus (Shining), will play at SXNF alongside guitarist Reine Fiske (Dungen). Elephant9 combines the best of explosive progressive jazz-rock and neo-psychedelia into epic sonic road-trips that can give goosebumps and raise hell in the same song.

Full Monty ~ A British slang phrase used to describe when one goes ‘all the way’.The Hague based producer Boris Boom does just that with his explosive mixture of electro, beats and bass. SXNF will be treated with a taste of his forthcoming 2016 show titled ‘Kill Your Ego’ in which contemporary electronic music meets classic west coast roughness.

These art rockers on speed are a well hidden gem hailing from The Hague’s underground, featuring members of Organisms and the notorious Spider Rico. This noise/mathrock outfit started out around the dark year 2000 and evolved without losing it’s trademark: chaos and nervosity, embodied by a filthy distorted sound, over the top riffs and abrasive & twisted postnoise rock.

There is legendary status surrounding krautrock bands like Neu!, Kraftwerk, Amon Düül II and Cluster – and we are especially proud to present the SXNF debut of two such iconic figures: Hans-Joachim Irmler of Faust, one of Krautrock’s main driving forces, and his sparring partner Jaki Liebezeit, the rhythmic backbone of Can. Irmler and Liebezeit are perfect examples of experimental musicians who have managed to stay eternally relevant. A special energy is released through the clash of these two masters of improvisation where organ and drum symbiose into a unrivalled hypnotic maelstrom.

Sitting on a barber chair, the old Bowie (skillfully played by Sis Josip) has his hair and make-up done by a young Angie ( magnificently played by Charlotte Van Winden). Tonight he will be on stage again, delighted and gigantic as ever, surrounded by screaming fans of all ages. But this will happen only later. In collaboration with Todaysart and Shape, SXNF presents Dutch composer and producer Julien Mier, known for his eclectic and washed out collision of musical genres. Mier’s signature is this width approach of fragmented melodies, packed in a palette of, sometimes almost waterfall kind of textures and dreamy, melancholic stories.

While still in his early thirties, Guiliana, recognized by the New York Times as “a drummer around whom a cult of admiration has formed,” has earned international acclaim for his innovative and creative style. His quartet Beat Music switches fluidly between acoustic an electronic music in jams and improviations filled with with deep and bubbly bass lines, icy drum grooves, alien space-sounds, vocal samples, smokey hip hop and dissected drum ‘n bass beats. Over the last decade the drummer, composer and producer has toured and played with the likes of Meshell Ndegeocello, Avishai Cohen, Lionel Loueke, Brad Mehldau and he is the lead drummer on Bowie’s forthcoming album Blackstar.

Singer Lennard boldly switched his English lyrics for the Dutch native tongue, thus unvieling a dark poetic universe filled with sharp observations.

Question: Is Rocket From The Tombs legendary? Answer: No. It’s mythical. Before Dead Boys and Pere Ubu there was Rocket From The Tombs. Formed in 1974, the band dismantled after only 200 days, leaving behind just the live recordings of songs that would become anthems. After the split, the bandmembers reformed into different groups that grew out to be prominent in thier respective musical scenes: Pere Ubu, featuring an abrasive and layered avantgardistic sound within the art-punk and Dead Boys, setting example in the punck scene with their raw sound and maladjusted behavior. And now, the unimaginable happens: after 40 years, Rocket From The Tombs has reformed and will finally play on Dutch soil for the first time ever at State-X New Forms.

Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy has grown out to be a phenomenon, a movement. With a multifaceted instrumental blend of raw funk, soul, jazz and R&B, the Brooklyn mega-group has found the ideal balance in several aspects. Their cast-iron compositions allow room for improvisation and a profound respect for tradition, paired with musical innovation. Snarky Puppy are uncompromising, and draw inspiration from Herbie Hancock, Björk and James Brown as well as Radiohead. A live Snarky Puppy experience is even more brilliant and enthralling – if that’s possible – than recorded. The band has played sold-out shows and thrilling concerts all over the world. For their show at State-X New Forms we expect around 12 musicians on stage.

Plaistow is a trio from Geneva that brings a classical line-up of piano, bass, drums. The band operates in the musical fields of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, The Necks and most notabley New York’s Dawn Of Midi, one of the highlights of last years SXNF. Minimalism, repetitive patterns, odd-time signatures and noise are transformed into the organic depth of Plaistow’s sound: a bone chilling experience performed solely on drums, acoustic bass and a grand piano.

Stoka Ensemble is a new ensemble from The Hague that probes the intersections of noise music and afrobeat. With a unique instrumentation of two horns, acoustic drums and three laptop artists, this ensemble brings together uncompromising experimental sounds with ruthless Nigerian beats and rhythms.

Spine-straightening-beats, swirling improvisations, dreamy escapes, malicious synth-howls and outerworld grooves is what you can expect from this Belgian collective. STUFF. uses samples and loops as part of their bold improvisations: ranging from Jimi Hendrix’s cries to J Dilla’s masterpieces and from to the more recent “beatinnovators” like Flying Lotus, Dorian Concept, Hudson Mohawke & Mike Slott. This Belgian group recenlty delivered one of the best recieved albums of this year and made a big impact on the some of the leading festivals this summer. Highly recommended!

Inspired by obscure, groovy, heavy and fuzzed out music from the 60’s and 70’s, the Hague’s Supersonic Blues lays down some deep jams. The feel of Jimi Hendrix, Blue Cheer, The MC5 and Cream form a solid foundation spiced up by hints of funk and soul. Right on!

Melodic bass lines, flowing grooving drums, dreamy chord progressions, layers of superelectric coloured synthesizers and scorching fuzz guitars, with ‘out there’ rhythmically hypnotizing words and melodies on top. The Womb delivers an authentic, playfully abstract, spaced out new sound into the neo-psychedelic babyboom. Or, as the bands puts it: ‘A florid kaleidoscopic and intense live experience for the whole family’.

Israel’s vibrant music scene is pumping out originality and groove that’s attracting attention worldwide. A prime example is the instumental postrock from Tatran, an Israelian trio of young, virtuose musicians that creates a rich and crystallized mix crossing through modern jazz, rock, classical, folk, avantgarde and electronica. Tartan shows are never the same, as the trio uses the energy and desire of the crowd to mold their shows. Captivating grooves, virtuoso performance and complex meticulous arrangements form the backbone for the ‘Tatran experience‘: a boundless dynamic improvisation.

This Dutch group draws its inspiration from different sources all over the world: from French electrolabel Ed Banger to the authentic sounds of afromasters such as Tony Allen, Joe Zawinul, Mad Professor, Konono no 1, King Sunny Ade and William Onyeabor. In countless nocturnal jamsessions Umame Afrorave mastered their crossover between authentic African musical phrasing and raw uncompromising analogue sounds and turned into an inescapable exotic dance craze.

DJ Wolf!Where? converges a wide range of sounds into multilayered sets where dark-techno fuses with the full on dynamics of electro house, new wave, acid post punk and psychadelica. However... at the already adventerous and caleidoscopic SXNF, Wolf!Where? will take a step down and serve Paardcafe a more relaxed blend of danceable comfort food, thus forming a late night safe haven for those pioneering in the musical frontlines.
