State School Education (1870 – 1952)
To gain knowledge of what state school education was like during this period.
To understand the changes in the National Curriculum.
To be able to collate knowledge from the last three lessons and produce a timeline.
Working Class Schools started in 1870. Took a while for all children to attend these
schools as they had to stop working (less income into the family).
Employers wanted a more disciplined workforce with basic skills.
They needed to learn obedience and how to follow instructions – very different from public schools.

Drilled into learning
After the Boer War (ill-disciplined and unfit working class in the army) The Model Course was introduced.
Military Drill exercises were introduced (exercises through regimented commands).
After the ill health of the nation after WW1. Recreational exercises was seen as very
beneficial. It was also seen as being enjoyable and therefore ‘THERAPEUTIC’.
It included regimented exercise but also ‘free-movement’ e.g. dance and small games.
Still fitness and therapeutic as well as using your mind.
Athletics, gym and games were included – still formalised.
Kit was worn and gymnasia built.
Needed to rebuild schools. Apparatus and playing fields were
introduced. Movement away from prescription to a
more creative, child-centred, movement style of learning.
