MDNA President, Ron Shuster, AEAFederal Equipment Div./PME Technologies Inc.

We have some very exciting things going on,

and I would like to bring you up to speed

on the happenings within the MDNA.

Up-and-Coming Chapter Leaders

Prior to the Weekend with the Pros (WWTP),

we held a Chapter Leadership Seminar.

Approximately a dozen future leaders

participated in this one day seminar where

they were provided with tools necessary for

planning and executing successful chapter

meetings. The training also included

education on the available resources at the

MDNA National Headquarters as well as

the history of MDNA, AMEA, and Locator

Services.

2013 Weekend with the Pros

WWTP, my favorite MDNA event, took place

this past October in Cleveland and was an outstanding action-packed weekend. The

Cleveland Chapter was a gracious host. We visited Swagelok, ArcelorMittal Steel Mill,

Meyer Products LLC and Lincoln Electric as well as some of our Cleveland member

warehouses/showrooms, including Absolute Machinery Corporation, Gahr Machine Co.

and Small Tools Inc. I am proud to report that of the over 150 attendees, approximately

50 were first timers. This was very significant because it shows that the MDNA has a

large group of young members in our industry. This was a very successful networking

and educational event.

MDNA Premier Vendors

Our Premier Vendor Program is in full swing. Born out of the Next Generation Committee,

this program allows companies and businesses that service our industry, i.e., riggers,

truckers, packaging companies, leasing companies, etc., to associate with the MDNA. In

addition to the program being a great revenue source for our association, more

importantly, it benefits both our members and the vendors with networking opportunities.

If you know of, or conduct business with, any of these types of companies, please

provide [email protected] with the necessary contact information so that we can forward

them a packet explaining the value of becoming an MDNA Premier Vendor.

MDNA 73rd Annual Convention

Our MDNA Annual Convention will be taking place April 24th - 27th at the JW Marriott

Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort and Spa in Arizona. While the Convention Committee

always seems to go above and beyond in their preparations year after year, I believe

this upcoming convention will be like no other. The beautiful property and location are

‘just what the doctor ordered’ after most of us have dealt with one of the harshest

winters in a very long time. The Chairperson of our seminars, Kim Khoury, has been

actively putting together interesting and entertaining educational and networking

opportunities for the attendees. I guarantee that everyone will leave the convention

feeling refreshed and energized, and will walk away having learned something

different and even with a new business opportunity or two.

State of the Association Continued from page 1

USETEC

May 5th - 7th we will be participating in USETEC in Cologne, Germany. USETEC is the

largest world trade fair for used technology, attracting interested parties from all

over the world. MDNA will have a booth to attract the show attendees and distribute

MDNA marketing materials and Locator books. Our goal is to market our association

and our members to many potential buyers and sellers from all over the world. Our

participation will undoubtedly provide substantial global trade opportunities to all

of our members.

New Staff

Currently, we are in the process of hiring a Marketing Director who we hope to have

in place shortly. This person will be tasked with disseminating our message of ‘Why

it is an advantage to do business with an MDNA Member’. This will be accomplished

by using all available tools, i.e., social and business media outlets, upgrading our

website, and improving our online presence, to name a few. It is our intention to

upgrade our branding of MDNA.

Next Generation Committee

As mentioned earlier, we are excited about the involvement of ‘New Blood’ in the

association; and we are constantly looking for ways for them to provide input and

express their goals and expectations for the future of MDNA. George Scott IV, the

current Next Generation Committee Chairman, is beginning to run “virtual meetings,”

allowing the future leaders to participate in conferences ‘remotely’ to help eliminate

the burden on their employers with the time and financial commitment required to

travel to national board meetings. I am confident that during these meetings,

innovative ideas will be born, providing a continued path of success for our

association.

Please Participate

As one of the more than 40 volunteers on the MDNA Board of Directors, AMEA Board

of Directors and the Locator Services Board of Directors, I would like to encourage you

to participate in at least one of the organization-sponsored events or meetings. The

Association always benefits from member participation.

Your MDNA Board

Please know that your MDNA Board is active and engaged and is always open to new

ideas and opportunities that are good for the entire organization. Do we always hit

a home run, No! But, dare I say, no organization does. We learn from our mistakes,

we tweak our plans, or we move on to the next opportunity just like all of you do in

your successful machinery businesses. Furthermore, I can assure you that we all

truly believe that we are acting in the best interest of MDNA, AMEA, and Locator

Services with every decision we make.

Our goal remains to provide better business and advertising tools through Locator

Services, additional educational and appraisal opportunities through AMEA, and

most importantly, create increased buying and selling opportunities for our members.

I would love to hear from

you. If you have ideas

that can help our

association, or if you

believe that there is

something that we can

do better, please contact

me at:

NAM Survey Confirms MDNA’s Position

Expired tax provisions are bad for our industry and the economy

A survey by the National Association of Manufacturers suggests that 35% of U.S.

manufacturers plan to reduce investment plans this year due to expiring tax breaks,

specifically enhanced Section 179 expensing and bonus depreciation. Chad Moutray,

NAM’s chief economist, said in a statement, “Manufacturers in America are making

more products today and making them better than ever before, which is why they

believe in a bright future of growth and job creation...However, Washington’s burden-

some regulatory, tax and health care policies still loom large in manufacturers’

business decisions, particularly for the smallest companies.” Among firms with fewer

than 500 employees, 40% said their plans will change. Of the 318 NAM members

surveyed, 79% described an “unfavorable business climate” in the terms of government

regulation and taxes as their biggest challenge.

(L-R) Congressman Brad Schneiderand MDNA President, Ron Shuster, AEA

Federal Equipment Div./PME Technologies Inc.

MDNA members have heeded the call to

contact your representatives and a

number of you have passed on those

comments to the MDNA National office.

Not one elected official has respondedagainst the enhanced provisions affecting IRS Section 179 that expired at the end of

last year, yet not one said they would do anything about it. This survey validates the

MDNA position that without retroactive action on this matter, manufacturing will be hurt.

The MDNA Chicago Chapter, thanks to Charles Winternitz, CEA, CSA, President of LOEB

WINTERNITZ Industrial Auctioneers, hosted one of their area local leaders, Congress-

man Brad Schneider. Representative Schneider (D-Deerfield) a pro jobs, pro manufac-

turing voice in Washington, was very sympathetic to the concerns voiced at the

meeting, but unfortunately could not give us any hope that Congress would act and

reinstate the increased Section 179 limits as in the past.

It is important that MDNA members and all that are concerned

about this cause continue to write. The NAM survey was pub-

lished in a number of leading newspapers and quite possibly

will garner the attention that this matter needs.

SPOTLIGHTMEMBER

Over the past 60 years, Sterling Machinery Exchange, located in

sunny South El Monte California, has evolved from a sleepy

scrap metal yard to a booming new and used industrial

metalworking machinery dealership. The company’s founder,

Bill Mattes, still comes to work every day and is a wonderful

example of a genuine rags-to-riches story.

In 1947, Mr. Mattes graduated from high school, sold his

bicycle and blue suede coat, and used the money to pay for a

seat in a carpool to California. Upon his arrival in the golden

state, Bill worked with a family friend who had found success

in the scrap metal business. He quickly learned the trade and

was soon in business for himself. One day a customer

purchased $800 worth of steel but was unable to pay his total

bill in cash. Instead, the customer traded an air compressor as

payment for the $800. Mr. Mattes quickly sold the compressor

for $1800 (a $1000 profit), and Sterling Machinery Exchange was

born.

Over the years, Sterling Machinery Exchange has grown by

leaps and bounds. Originally nothing more than a small

wooden shack on a 100,000 sq.ft. dirt lot, Sterling now stocks

over 2,000 machines from over 500 manufactures. Originally

focused on used machinery, the business has recently, with

great success, ventured into selling new machines. Not only

does Sterling inspect and repair all used machines in-house

prior to sale, but they even have a full service paint department.

Sterling Machinery Exchange has been a proud member of the

Machinery Dealers National Association for over 46 years. In

that time, Sterling has expanded from a small dealership

serving the local community to a nationally recognized sales

force, serving all of the United States as well as many interna-

tional countries.

On January 28th, 2014, at the South El Monte City Hall, Mayor

Luis Aguinaga and the city council presented Bill Mattes an

award for 60 years of business excellence.

At 84 years of age, Mr. Mattes is more excited than ever about

the future of Sterling Machinery Exchange. He is looking

forward to Sterling Machinery Exchange’s latest endeavor.

Partnered with MRI Auctions of Simi Valley, CA., they will be

holding a live webcast auction for the machinery and equip-

ment of the San Onofre Nuclear Power Generating Station

Scheduled March 26th, 27th and 28th.

When asked what the key to operating a successful business

is, Mr. Mattes says “Honesty, integrity and hard work is all I’ve

ever known!”.

One of the benefits of belonging to the MDNA is the

networking opportunities that exist. The MDNA

Spotlight series introduces individuals from MDNA

Member firms to the membership and is open to all

members in good standing. If you are interested in

introducing yourself to the Association please contact
