INTRODUCTION
The Jack Knox Papers, 1932-1978, consists of 544 original cartoon drawings, photocopies of
his correspondence and papers that include some photographs. The original cartoons are found in 12
oversize boxes and are arranged in alphabetical order by cartoon title. The papers are contained in two
Hollinger boxes and one oversize box. This collection was donated to the Tennessee Historical Society
by Mrs. Jack (Edith) Knox in 1981.
Additional correspondence can be found on microfilm in the Jack Knox Correspondence, 1938-
1980, collection, Microfilm Accession Number 1081. Additional cartoons, scrapbooks, and
correspondence can be found on microfilm in the THS Jack Knox Collection, Accession Number 676.
Single photocopies of unpublished writings of the Jack Knox Papers may be made for purposes
of scholarly research.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Jack Knox Papers, 1932-1978, represent the work of a noted conservative political
cartoonist who drew for the Nashville Banner newspaper. Mr. Knox retired in 1975 after 29 years with
the Nashville Banner. His first big break as a cartoonist came with the Democratic National Committee
during Franklin D. Roosevelt's first campaign. He drew the cartoons for a booklet entitled
"Everybody's Political Primer". He became the Staff cartoonist for the Evening Tennessean in 1933.
A year later he moved to The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal where he worked for 11 years. He joined
the Banner in 1946. He had a showing of his drawings at the Parthenon in Nashville, a one man show
at the Brooks Gallery in Memphis, and was invited to show at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington,
D.C. He married his wife Edith, in 1946 and raised four children, John, Phoebe, Joseph, and Britt. He
died on February 23, 1985 at the age of 75.
The original cartoon drawings in this collection have been arranged in alphabetical order by the
title of the cartoon. A table format was used in the Container List in order give a better description to
facilitate searching by topics. The cartoons are broken down into 13 broad categories: Aeronautics,
Charity, Defense & Foreign Affairs, Economy, Education, Holidays, Industry, Labor & Employment,
Politics & Government, Recreation, Safety, and Seasons. Column three of the table includes
descriptive key words that further describe each cartoon. This was done in order to use the "Find"
feature for searching words in the MicroSoft Word computer program.
Mr. Knox wrote two books. Riverman which was published in 1971, depicts the living and
working conditions on the Upper Cumberland River in the early 20th Century. Box 13, folders 15-17
contains materials related to this successful book. His second book was America's Tennessee Walking
Horse, published in 1973. A copy of this small book, that was also illustrated by Mr. Knox, can be
found in Box 13, folder 9.
Mr. Knox contends in his correspondence that his grandfather, Mr. Edward Warren Clark, was
responsible for the salvation and restoration of the Civil War locomotive, "General". The Civil War
event on April 12, 1862, was known as "The Great Locomotive Chase" and involved another famous
locomotive, "Texas." James J. Andrews and a band of 19 Union raiders managed to steal the General
for the purpose of destroying the railroad supply line between Atlanta and Chattanooga. Mr. Clark
spotted the General waiting in line for the scrap yard in 1890. It was restored and displayed for the first
time at the World's Colombian Exposition in Chicago of 1893. A considerable amount of information
on this subject can be found in Box 13, folder 3.
The photographs in this collection have been relocated to Box 14. Some of these are
photographic copies of his cartoons.
The greatest importance of this collection is attributed to the original cartoon drawings of this
noted cartoonist. The correspondence in this collection includes a personal response letter from Dwight
D. Eisenhower describing his feelings on how the war in Vietnam is progressing in 1968. This letter is
probably the most important piece of correspondence in the collection. There are four personal letters
from Lyndon B. Johnson that depict their close personal friendship. Additionally, there is
correspondence from Vice-President Richard Nixon requesting one of his cartoons. The biggest
weakness is that the cartoons are not dated. A second weakness is the correspondence and other papers
are photocopies rather than originals.
