The countdown is on to the 2014 Missouri State Fair!

The 112th year will be another outstanding celebration of agriculture, and the Missouri State Fair Commission counts it a privilege to be part of such an experience.

Through the years, the Missouri State Fair has earned the reputation of offering a premier agriculture program. This year is no exception with entries in our livestock shows and competitive exhibits anticipated to number nearly 30,000, including al-most 4,000 youth represented from the FFA and 4-H organizations.

We are especially excited about a new exhibit this year, Thank a Farmer for the Har-vest. This exhibit will list the names of our 2014 Missouri Farm Families and include photographs of many of them engaged in activities on their farms. The tribute will also identify production areas across our state and educate fairgoers on important industry facts. The tribute, sponsored by the University of Missouri Extension, will be on display Aug. 7-17 in front of our Historic Administration Building. Farm families will again have a special recognition day at the Fair on Monday, Aug. 11, sponsored by Missouri Farm Bureau.

In addition to honoring our agricultural roots, this year we will again acknowledge some special groups with special promotions. See the daily highlights in this program for specials for military, senior adults, women in agriculture, and law enforcement/firefighters/EMTs. New this year is a special day for kids: kids ages 12 and younger will get in free to the Fair Saturday, Aug. 16. A “Fun of the Farm” poster contest and a “Largest Tomato” contest are being offered for these children on this day, along with old-time harvest games in the MoDOT Highway Gardens. Be sure to check out these details on our website, and also available inside this program.

Professional entertainment is another important part of the Missouri State Fair ex-perience, and we have another incredible lineup of free entertainment shows as well as big names on the Pepsi Grandstand Stage, including Florida Georgia Line and Jake Owen! Fairgoers will also enjoy shopping for bargains across the fairgrounds and in our air-conditioned vendor buildings, and picking up how-to tips from experts in our Agriculture, Floriculture, Fine Arts, and Home Economics Buildings. Be sure to pick up your copy of the 2012-2013 Missouri State Fair award-winning recipes cookbook this year while visiting the Home Economics Department.

It has taken many hours from many dedicated stakeholders to prepare this year’s stellar showcase and I want to thank everyone for their contributions, and extend to you a warm welcome to the 2014 Missouri State Fair Aug. 7-17. Let’s Harvest the Fun!
