Availability of resources The main source of funding is the State Budget – there are two Funds established - "Decommissioning" and “RAW".
Legislation During the recent years the Bulgarian legislation in the field of nuclear energy is updated in conformity with the European legislation. Additionally, we follow the recommendations of the IAEA.
Stakeholders It is important to inform stakeholders about the
decommissioning program of the DFRW Novi Han and to be involved in public discussions and decision-making.
RAW management
The generated RAW streams according to their final point of management are divided into the following main types:
Materials that meet the criteria for conditional or unconditional release from regulatory control;
RAW streams, which after processing meet the criteria for disposal at the NDF – Radiana;
RAW streams that do not meet the NDF WAC– DSRS which are dismantled in the APLC and the HC and temporarily stored on the site in specialized containers and drums for future repackaging (encapsulation, placing in canisters, etc.) and transfer for disposal/long term storage in the future storage/disposal facility .

The facilities of the “DFRW Novi Khan" are relatively
independent concerning their location, physical and
radiation protection, monitoring, etc. This condition allows
decommissioning of the facilities to be implement
separately in stages.
In the Preparatory Stage (By 2025) all the spent
radioactive sources (DSRS) and RAW located at the
surface of the site will be removed from the containers,
characterized, treated and packed according to their type
(the RAW stream to which they refer). Some of the RAW
packages are transferred to the SD “RAW-Kozloduy” for
subsequent preparation for disposal, while other parts are
temporarily stored in containers until a decision is made for their management.

The Decommissioning of the historical vaults and remediation of the site
of “DFRW-Novi Han“ will start after 2025. The resulting radioactive waste
will be processed and transferred to disposal facilities.
