State Disability
Strategy Outcomes
Paper
What we heard from people to develop the
State Disability Strategy is in this document.
2
IntroductionThis document is a summary of what we
heard so we can develop the 10-year plan.
The plan will support the inclusion of
people with disability in all aspects of life.
So, disability is a part of everyday life.
Then everyone feels welcome and can join in.
3
What is the State Disability Strategy?
This plan is about the human rights of
people with disability.
‘Human rights’ show everyone the best way
to treat people.
It’s about being respectful, fair and equal to
everyone.
This plan aims for the community to see
people with disability in a more positive
way.
To achieve change across our community,
we need on-going action.
This means everyone has a part to play
including people, community, business,
service providers and government.
Western Australia is proud of the positive
work done in the community so far.
4
We want to continue with this work in line
with the United Nations Convention on the
Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The State Disability Strategy will:
Set a vision for Western Australia, to
show everyone is valued in our
community.
Show everyone has a place and is
part of our community.
Look at key areas to provide equal
opportunities for people with disability

Strategy.

The Purpose of the Consultation Outcomes Paper
This paper helps to create the plan.
And shows what we heard from people with
disability about concerns, hopes and what
is important in the future.
The paper also shows what we heard from
families and carers, service providers,
government and business.
We heard about what is important to make
changes happen.
We heard about the barriers and
challenges people with disability face every
day.
The barriers have not changed over time.
We heard many of the same problems as
before.
6
This paper details people’s vision for the
future.
And their thoughts on how to achieve an
inclusive community.
This document identifies four Pillars for change.
Working Together
The plan is being co-designed by people
with disability.
And people with lived experience.
People With disability WA helped the Co-
design Group to look at what we heard, and
what is important for the plan.
There is also:
A Reference Group.
Government and disability advice
groups.
7
What has happened so far
We did a public survey to help shape the
ten-year vision.
We held workshops and conversations all
around Western Australia.
This helped shape the values of the plan.
We heard about the issues and challenges
people with disability continue to face.
We heard about the values people with
disability would like to see in our
community.
The Co-design Group looked at the
feedback and areas for change.
8
Building a 10-year plan
People came to workshops about:
o Housing
o Health
o Rights and Justice
o Transport
o Support services
o Employment
o Education
o Local community
We spoke to individual Aboriginal
communities.
We spoke with people who were born in
other countries but now live in Western
Australia.
We spoke with people who have more than
one disability.
We spoke with families and siblings.

Vision
The workshops, surveys and feedback
created a vision for the plan.
The vision is:
People with disability,
and those who share their lives
are engaged and feel empowered to live as they choose.
In a community where everyone belongs.
This means creating a community where
people with disability:
o Have equal opportunity and rights
o Are included and take part in the
community
o Can connect and contribute
o Can access their community
o Can be as independent as they
choose
o Can be leaders to create change
