INTRODUCTION State Company for Mining Industries is one of

the companies of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals. The company's sites in different governorates of Iraq, in addition to the company's headquarter in Baghdad, the other sites are:-

-Nineveh governorate / Al-Rimah plant. - Anbar governorate / activated bentonite plant

and Mines of Western desert. - Basrah governorate / Al-Thaghir plant and

Basrah Slattren - Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf governorate/ mine of Najaf Plateau. - Al-Muthanna governorate / Samawah slattern.

INTRODUCTION• The company owns two industrial zones identities first in the field of asphalt products industry and modern construction chemicals. • The company is producing different types of modified asphalt products used in paving and aquatic insulation , also produce concrete additives which improving the concrete mix properties.

The second identity of the company is in the field of mining industries. The company aims to exploitation of different mineral ores and metal scrap to be converted into products used directly or enter as intermediate material into other industries .

Research & DevelopmentThe company has performed scientific

researches in the field of mining to prepare metals and metal alloys and chemicals from:-

1. Metallic Ores

2. Metal Scrap and other materials like charcoal and iron turnings.

3. Bitter water.

Research & DevelopmentThe company is achieved many researches in the metallurgical field over a decade at both laboratory and pilot plants, including: -

- Preparation of iron oxide from Al-Hussainiyat hematite iron ore in western desert.

- Preparation of silicon metal and ferrosilicon alloy from high purity sand which is located in the Western desert by submerged electric arc furnaces technology.

Research & Development - Preparation of aluminum granular and flake

powder from aluminum scrap, which is used in the production of thermostone and silver paint.

- Preparation of calcium carbide from Iraqi carbonate deposits.

- Preparation of copper powder by electrochemical method.

- Purification of Lead by electrochemical method.- Preparation of copper by electrochemical

method.

Research & Development- Preparation of magnesium powder from fusion salts.- Preparation of dead burned magnesia from bitter water.- Preparing of chemicals from bitter water.- Purification of silica sands by chemical method.- Preparation of aluminum oxide on the pilot plant stage. Some of these researches has been converted from

Projects of CompanyThe company is currently working on the implementation of the rehabilitation and development projects and expanding mining industry with funding from the government investment plan and the aim of these projects is to optimum utilization of national resources in Iraq….

Projects of CompanyThe company planning the execution of its projects. Some

the following project is under construction and the others will be executed within upcoming three years:-

1.The project of producing aluminum castings from

aluminum cans in the production rate of (600) ton per year.

2. the project of developing and expanding the pilot plant of flake aluminum powder in the production rate of (100) ton per year.

3. The project of rehabilitation of Basrah Slattern in the production rate of ( 500,000 ) ton per year.

project in the production rate of ( 75,000 ) ton per year.

5. The project of opening Ironstone mine of Al Hussainiyat area in the western desert.

6. The project of development and expanding the production of solid brines and salt solutions for the purpose of oil wells in which meet the required technical characteristics of the investment companies .

The researches of preparing silicon metal and ferrosilicon alloy from silica sands has resulted a technical and economical indications that encouraged us to go ahead to establish a production plant to meet the country needs and export abroad.

INDICATIONS

- The high purity of silica sands reaches (97-98 %) in the quarry.

- Ability of rising the purity of silica sands to more than 99% by physical method.

- Availability of charcoal and iron turning for silicon industry. - Low prices of raw materials is used in this industry. - There is a local need to the silicon metal and ferrosilicon

alloy. - The years of experience in the operation of (Submerged Arc

Furnace) and understanding of the technology of production.

Silicon industry in Company

Uses of Silicon metalSilicon is used in producing Non-Ferrous metal

alloys like ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, and Al-Si alloys which represents 55% of world consumption.

Silicon is used in producing silicones, silicon oils and silicon resin which represents 40% of world consumption.

Silicon of Ultra high purity is used in generating the electrical energy in solar cells.

Silicon of high purity is used in electronic industry.

Uses of FerrosiliconFerrosilicon alloys are used in producing raw

steel and alloyed steel in particular, the steel used in the transformer cores and electrical motors with the magnetic properties.

Ferrosilicon alloys has an important role in balancing of the metallic phases in molten steel and in the dispersion and reduction of the size of graphite in the produced steel.

As a result of these indications and R&D results, the company was planed the establishing of its silicon projects. The company now construct the project of producing metallurgical silicon (98-99)% from Iraqi high silica sands in the production rate of (300) ton per year for the purpose of Ibn Sina Chemical Company.

The company is in the stage of conducting the economic feasibility study for establishing project for ferrosilicon alloy production which supports the silicon industry in Iraq.

Future Goals1. The company is planning to establish a plant for

ferrosilicon alloys production in the production capacity of ( 25,000 ) ton per year from Iraqi high silica sands in the manner of investment to meet increase of local demand and for export of the alloy.

2. The company has an incomplete project of (Dead Burned Magnesia ) from bitter water from Basra slattern at production rate (22,000) ton per year for the purpose of state company for refractory which produce Magnesia brick. the company needs to the know-how and technical assistance to achieve this goal.

Future Goals 3. The company is planning to establish a plant

for produce Vanadium Inhibitor at production capacity of (8,000) ton per year from by using the intermediate product of the dead burned magnesia plant for the purpose of power generating plants.

4. the company is planning to establish a plant for producing soda ash at production capacity of (150,000) ton per year from local limestone deposits and NaCl deposits in Samawa quarry for local demand and export.

producing caustic soda from local NaCl deposits in Samawa quarry or Basra.

6. the company is planning to establish a plant for producing alumina from local deposits of kaolin for the purpose of refractory industry in Iraq
