1 January 2018 Volume 26 President’s Message The parties and the holidays are almost over. The New Year is just around the corner. Amazing how I am always shocked as to how fast everything happens. I think this is just another of those "you're getting older" phases. I can remember a time when we thought that we would stay young forever. Well, those days are gone for some of us. Now on to bigger and better things. We've come through the season so far with very little weather damage. I hope we stay that way. Personally, I've learned a new pattern in quilting stack and whack I prefer Kaleido scope. Dolores McGlynn is the person to thank for this. Come to the meeting on January 4th and you will see it completed. The following was written by Miriam Hamilton Keare, reprinted by Ann Landers Enjoy. If you open it, close it If you turn it on, turn it off If you unlock it, lock it up. If you break it, admit it. If you can't fix it, call someone who can. If you borrow it, return it. If you value it, take care of it. If you make a mess, clean it up. If you move it, put it back. If it belongs to someone else, get permission to use it. If you don't know how to operate it, leave it alone. If it is none of your business, don't ask questions. Happy New Year to all. A Quilter’s Poem

(forwarded from Mary Jane Gantzler former FQU member)

May your points meet on your triangles and your bobbins never tangle

May you always have more room for pieces of red in your closet and under your bed

May you always have fabrics galore and be able to convince your spouse that you need more

May your machine always run right on track and not run out of bobbin half way thru the stack

May your ruler never slip and your blade be sharp and quick

May your stitches be 20 to the inch so you won't have to quilt in the ditch

May your bobbins always be full and your seams not pucker or pull

May your corners be square the first time and your quilt shop have the right shade of lime

And last but not least, may peace abide as we quilt in the New Year side by side

UFO –

The UFO rules are the same - register your UFOs before the November program meeting (Auction) and pay $1.00 each (cash or checks made out to Bobbie Dewees only). For each UFO you complete, your name will go into the “hat.” The winner will be drawn at the Spring Luncheon, you do not have to be present to win. The fabric project must be completed - no tops or crocheting - sorry. If you need to send your UFO as a gift before a meeting, send a photo to me at [email protected] and I will give you credit for the completion. I now everyone has at least one UFO, so join the fun and maybe win some money to pay for more fabric.

Sunshine & Hearts

If you know of anyone who would appreciate being remembered, please let Joan Unkel know. If by some chance the person to whom we are sending the card is not listed in either Fairfax's membership directory or that of Quilters Unlimited, please include an address to which the card should be sent.

Fairfax also has an optional program in which members send a block with a heart on it to members that need some sunshine. Background fabric and patterns for members who wish to send a heart block are usually available at meetings. If by some chance they are not, please let Joan know. She will send it to you.

Our thoughts and well wishes have gone to Bobbie Dewees.

PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS January 2018

Happy New Year Fairfax Quilters! Karen Johnson will start our new year of programs on January 18th, with a trunk show of her gorgeous needle turn appliqué. Karen works and teaches at The Quilt Patch in Fairfax. Her work will take your breath away. You won’t want to miss her trunk show! Perhaps it will inspire you to pick up needle and thread and learn hand appliqué? Hopefully the weather will cooperate for us! Starting in January, Karen will be teaching a series of classes at the Quilt Patch on Saturdays called “Beautiful Wildflowers” using three dimensional appliqué techniques, followed by Appliqué Afternoon.

As always, signup sheets for future workshops will be on the side table in the meeting room at every meeting. Volunteer teaching assistants will be offered a gift certificate for a future free workshop. If you are the first person to sign up, with check in hand, for a workshop and you indicate to me, Barbara Kauffman, that you are willing to act as the instructor’s assistant, you will receive a gift certificate for a free future workshop of your choice! We are looking for teaching assistants for our spring classes.

All Programs are at 10:00 a.m. Half-day workshops cost $25, Full day workshops cost $40. All half- day workshops will be held at St. Peters in the Woods Episcopal Church, directly after the lecture/trunk show, on the third Thursday of the month. All full day workshops in 2017-2018 will be held on Friday, the day after the program meeting, at The Quilt Patch in downtown Fairfax. As in the past, we are unable to offer refunds on class fees. No exceptions. If you find you can’t attend a class you have paid for, you will need to find someone to take your place. Your replacement will reimburse you. Remember, any kit/tool fees must be paid directly to the instructor, not to Fairfax QU.

The Whole Year of Programs 2017 – 2018

All Programs are at 10:00 a.m. Half-day workshops cost $25, Full day workshops cost $40. Unless otherwise noted, half-day workshops will be held at St. Peters in the Woods directly after the lecture/trunk show. There is a parking lot just outside the ballroom with ramp access to unload your sewing machine and supplies or you can use the elevator from the main entrance.

There will be a welcome gift for everyone and door prizes for some lucky winners. Our only “required” activity is to make a simple friendship block for the drawing on Sunday. We’ll provide directions for a few optional projects which will be revealed at the business meeting in March. For more information contact Nancy Adams at 703-323-4454 or [email protected].
