MESSAGE FROM PATRICIALead organiser of Startup Summer 2014

The first time I heard of Startup Summer was in London, in 2011. I was writing my Master thesis on the psychology of the entrepreneur, and I decided to apply with an idea I had in mind. What began as an attempt to get more participants for my research, ended up being a live-changing experience. During the five weeks of the program, I changed my perspective on entrepreneurship. What was just a concept I read and wrote about, began to have real meaning for me. I lived first hand the absolutely fascinating process of building a startup. And I never looked back. ! After finishing my Master in UCL, London, I moved back to Oslo. It was the summer of 2013 when, while updating my CV, I accidentally found that there was a Startup Summer happening in Oslo. So I went ahead and emailed Stina Nysæther, the former lead organiser, about volunteering opportunities. She was very kind to introduce me to the rest of the organising team, where I took care of the social media and communication responsibilities. During the two weeks of the program, I met lots of interesting and inspiring people. I felt in love with the Norwegian startup ecosystem. ! This year 2014 I am the lead organiser of Startup Summer, this time as a part of my duties as project manager for Startup Norway. It was a great responsibility to take over after the great job that Stina had done in the previous edition. Luckily, she was of great help throughout the whole process. I have been fortunate to work with Stina and a fantastic team of volunteers, and to collaborate with wonderful speakers and mentors. We delivered together a great event, where the teams learnt the most important skills for running a successful startup, met some of the game changers of the norwegian and international startup community, and validated their products. ! Our goals for next year are to reach the Nordic entrepreneurs and to increase the visibility of the Nordic startups as a region as well as the Norwegian startups. All in all, strengthening the Norwegian entrepreneurial ecosystem. We look forward to collaborating with you - wether you are an entrepreneur, a community leader, an investor, a journalist or just passionate about startups - to continue the efforts to set Oslo and Norway in the map of entrepreneurship.

STARTUP SUMMER

This program was run for the first time during the summer of 2011, created by Magne Matre Gåsland and Andreas Hennie. "Andreas and I wanted to create a summer program for students and aspiring entrepreneurs. In the course of two intensive weeks, the teams worked on realizing their own idea, together with like-minded people. The main focus has been web based IT startups. The two weeks consisted of product development, customer development, and socializing with the other teams. The p ro g ra m e n d e d w i t h a d e m o - d a y presentation in front of mentors and investors." - Magne Matre Gåsland.

Startup Summer is an intensive accelerator program, where startups and aspiring entrepreneurs get the chance to kickstart their business.

The fist edition (2011), which took place at the offices of Opera Software in Oslo, featured 24 participants resulting in 6 new innovative IT startups. Knut Wien led the second edition (2012; in collaboration with Startup Norway), where 26 participants distributed in 9 teams, worked during two weeks at MESH, the co-working space. The third edition (2013), led by Stina Nysæther, took place at Gründer-garasjen under the Startup Norway umbrella, featuring 14 teams and 40 entrepreneurs. It was organized by Startup Norway, Business Model User Group and Simula Research Laboratory. Magne and Andreas collaborated with a guest talk and mentoring, and although they are no longer involved in the project, they are very happy to see how the event has taken a huge step into becoming a sustainable yearly event.

SUMARY OF WEEK 1 On Monday the participants arrived at the venue around 9:00 and, those who had not done it online, proceeded with the registration. They were given their badges and office space together with all the office supplies that they needed for the 2 weeks. They had breakfast together and started mingling. At 10:00, Stina gave the opening talk, introducing the teams to Startup Norway and our mission. She also had some team dynamics for the teams to get to know each other. The teams proceeded to give a 5 minutes presentation of their startups to the rest of the teams. This presentations were recorded in order to see the evolution of their ideas and presentation skills through out the program. Following their presentations, Martin Jensen from Blink gave a presentation on pitching, and showed them his video in the norwegian TV show LIFT. Lunch was served at 13:30, and afterwards the teams had some time to work on the development of their products. The welcoming party started at 17:00 . We had spanish tapas delivered by La Sangría, beers and music to celebrate the beginning of a two weeks of hard work and a great fun!

On Wednesday evening, Thomas Kjemperud gave a talk about the Hooked framework, field in which he has been working for several years. SUMARY OF WEEK 2 On Monday, Terje Christensen and Jerry Jernej Kelih from Business Model User Group were helping the teams with their business models. They had one-to-one workshops throughout the day with some of the teams. They also came back on Tuesday and Wednesday to dedicate enough time to every single team. Tuesday was a day devoted to design. For the morning session, Rodney Boot from BrandLab gave a talk on branding. For the afternoon session, Jens Dyvik from Dyvik Design and member of Bitraf, gave a talk about merging physical and digital design. Jens also showed the teams around Bitraf during the Startup Race, and he laser cut the Startup Summer logo for the participants. On Wednesday, Tom Haugeplass introduced the teams to the most relevant startup practicalities. On Wednesday evening, Maggie Yang put gave a talk about bargaining and negotiations, followed by a workshop. The participants (and some of the organisers too) were divided into pairs and assigned a case. This was a fantastic opportunity to apply the strategies that we just learnt in a relevant scenario. Finally, our last speaker was Per Harald Borgen, gave a talk about PR on Thursday.

Practicalities Every morning, the teams had a pitching round approached towards a different audience (i.e. an investor, a client, a grandma, someone they would want to recruit, etc). Practising is really important to perfect the pitches, and having to do it a few times a day really helped the teams to improve their communication skills. In addition, this was great for the speakers to rapidly get to know every startups. After every talk, the teams proceeded to fill out a feedback questionnaire. At the end of the questionnaire they could find a link to book a one-to-one mentoring session with the speaker. This was instrumental for us to get feedback on the speakers, and it was also a great tool to make sure that all the teams could have the chance to talk with the speakers.

On Thursday afternoon, the teams presented one last time their investor presentations, this time in front of Patricia Almeida and Jerry Kelih. They received feedback on their performance as speakers. That is, how engaging they were while giving the presentation, and how to improve it. During that same afternoon, one team member for every startup was recorded giving a 20 seconds elevator pitch in an elevator. This footage was later used to create a video that was presented during the Demoday

STARTUP RACE During the first week, on Friday the 1st of August, we had prepared something special for the participants. We wanted them to get to know some of the best places for entrepreneurs of the Oslo Startup Ecosystem. And we did that by making a race (The amazing race style), through some of the most relevant startup hubs in Oslo.

They visited MESH, Bitraf, Y3O, Google and StartupLab. Below there is an example of the clues they had to solve and the evidences they had to present. !Following their “Don´t be evil” unofficial slogan, this company has triggered a chain of products, acquisitions and partnerships that goes way beyond their main product. Go to their offices in Oslo and take a picture of your team next to their wooden company logo which hangs between the skies. !Can you guess where did they have to go?
