Ashland County has become a public art destination that is not weather dependentand our beautiful murals can be seen 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year!

The fall season in Ashland is the most beautiful, stark, remarkable viewing to behold out of the four seasons. The striking colors of the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forestand the Chequamegon Bay shoreline along with the natural beauty of several stateparks make Ashland County the place to be any time of year, but especially in the fall. #1 The Making of Mellen Mural 102 Bennett Street

This mural, painted by Irene Buzzel, depicts a collection of numerous important aspects in the history of Mellen since its founding in 1886. Logging and the resultingwood industry was the main reason the city was established and remains to this day.

The owner of the buildingwanted to honor the women

who raised him and had recently passed away.

This photograph was taken in front of the building the

mural was painted on in the ’40s.

#4 Oredock Mural 301 West Main Street

The Ashland Oredock was built in 1916, measured out at 1,800 feet, and was the largest concrete dock in the world. It was a beloved landmark

to the city of Ashland and its residents, it recalled a time past when shipping was such an integral part of Ashland.

#5 Railroad Mural 306 West 3rd Street

Located near the historic Soo Line Depot building, this mural representsboth the Soo Line and Chicago and Northwestern rail lines that

served Ashland. As with most towns, the railroad was Ashland’s lifeblood that made a great deal of its commercial growth possible. All

of the men are actual railroad workers.

Honoring the Ashland area military men and women.

#8 Lumberjack Mural401 West Main Street, West Side of Building

The Lumberjack Mural depicts the men (and one rare woman) of Ashland’slumber era, when the work day was from 4 am until dark, first freeze to firstthaw. An average day’s work for a pair of “sawyers” was 100 pine logs, at

$1.00 a day. In 1893, 10,000 lumberjacks worked in the logging camps to supply Ashland’s ten sawmills.

This mural depicts Dhooge’sGrocery of Ashland in 1910.An era when settlers were“farming the cut over” andgoing to town for suppliesoften meant a 2-day event

for area settlers.

#10 ’50s Snapshots Mural612 West Main Street, East Side of Building

A 1950s hamburger/ice cream shop at that time was in the planning stage,and the artists were asked to design a mural that would depict the ’50s era.

This mural depicts 3 lighthouses (Devils Island, Sand Island and Outer Island) located within the Apostle Islands in Chequamegon Bay

and their “keepers.”

Susan Prentice Martinsen, Ashland, Wisconsin, has been painting murals inthe Upper Great Lakes area since 1998. In addition to her independent work,she and Kelly Meredith have produced 20 murals together, many of them thelargest in the region. Susan paints with a fluid, painterly style that emphasizesdrawing and powerful lighting, which works well for mural work.

Kelly Meredith, Butternut, Wisconsin, works out of a studio that is housed inan abandoned section of the Butternut School. She has been a full-time muralistsince 2003. Since then she has completed over 70 murals throughout the UpperGreat Lakes area, largely in the area of historical/community-centered pieces.Prior to her mural career, Kelly was a public school art teacher for many years,and owned and operated a small T-shirt printing shop.

This mural pays tribute to the richheritage of Ashland’s Football

program which dates from 1896.It is located on the new entranceto Ashland’s football field at thecorner of 3rd Avenue East and

11th Street.

#13 Sixth Street Market Mural

This mural shows a piece oftimes gone by where the

market was a place of qualityservice and a social meeting

place, as well as the old-fashioned tradition that is

carried forward to the present-day market.
