Dan the food man answers your questions

Q: I'm a vegetarian. My

friends say my diet is bad because there's no

protein in it. Is this true?

Marcel, 15, New York, USA

Dan: That's a good question, Marcel. Protein is very important in your

diet. It gives you strength. There's protein in meat and fish but if you're vegetarian and you don't eat meat or fish, don't worry. There's also protein in

nuts, eggs, milk and cheese.

Q: I love biscuits,

chocolate and ice cream.

Is this a problem?

Linda, 16, Manchester, UK

Dan: I like those things too, Linda, but there are

a lot of carbohydrates,

sugars and fats in sweet foods so I only eat them once or twice a week.

Carbohydrates aren't always bad for you. There are carbohydrates in bread, pasta and rice and you need them for energy. But a lot of sugar and

fat is bad for you. A healthy diet has got protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and some fats.

Sue, 14, London, UK

contains a lot of vitamins

and minerals but they are also in foods like

vegetables, fish and meat. Vitamins and minerals

are important because they help your body to

The UK's craziest festivals

Read

1 :3 Read the text about crazy events in the UK. In which town or village does each event take place?

On New Year's Eve every year, about 200 people do a 500-metre mud race. This race is across the River Blackwater in the town of Maldon in Essex. First they put on funny clothes. Then they swim through freezing water. After that they run (or crawl) through 200 metre~ of mud to the finish line. The race takes about 'five minutes. And what's your special prize when you finish? After the race you get a cold shower!

New words

• strange • festival • mud • put on (clothes)

• through • crawl • finish line • prize • rolling • competitors • chase • catch • win • bottom

This is probably the craziest spring event but it's also hundreds of years old! On the last Saturday in May, competitors go to the top of Coopers Hill in Gloucestershire and then chase a 3 kg Gloucester cheese 250 metres down the hill. The cheese travels at about 110 kph so competitors don't usually catch it. The first person to arrive at the bottom of the hill wins the cheese. It usually takes about 20 seconds to get to the bottom.
