STAROOT VACANCIES

Editor’s pick of the week:

10 tips on how to save waterMunicipal and governing authorities in South Africa have requested that citizens use water sparingly amid a drought and crisis which is expected to last into the new year.In Gauteng, the City of Johannesburg has already implemented level two water restrictions which mean the fol-lowing:

• No watering and irrigating gardens be-tween 06:00 and 18:00• No filling of swimming pools• No using of hose pipes to wash cars, paved areas, etc.

Level three would entail supply of water at stipulated times a day, namely, only in the mornings and in the evenings at times to be announced, not unsimilar to electricity load shedding.Last week, City of Joburg suggested that residents ‘shower or bath in groups’.Joburg Water meanwhile said:

• You can store grey water in buckets to help flush toilets, water plants, wash cars, clean water for drinking, cooking & bathing.• Avoid leaving your taps running, use a cup when drinking water instead of us-ing your hands to drink water on a run-ning tap.

The City of Cape Town has published a list of water saving tips on its website. It notes that a person can save up to 20 litres of water per month by simply clos-ing the tap when brushing your teeth.Generally, 40 to 60% of household wa-ter is used for non-essential purposes, such as watering gardens and filling swimming pools, it said.

Here are 10 tips on how to save water:1. Re-use the final rinse water from washing machines for the next wash cy-cle.2. Flush toilets only when necessary.3. Monitor water meters for high con-sumption and possible water leaks4. Reduce shower times5. Confine watering of gardens to be-

fore 10:00 or after 16:006. Perform a water audit at home7. Collect rainwater for re-using on the garden or washing the car.8. Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.9. Insulate hot water pipes so that not too much water is wasted when waiting for water to get hot.10. Cover your swimming pool to re-duce water evaporation.

The Ekurhuleni municipality said that a number of areas had run dry due to the heatwave and drought in the region.Ekurhuleni residents were requested to adhere to the following measures:

• No filling of swimming pools;• No gardening and irrigation at all un-less you make use of grey water;• No water washing of pavements and cars;• Reduce showering time and capture in buckets the cold water that initially comes from the showers;• Repair leaking cisternsThe municipality said that if the situa-tion in all of the areas above deterio-rates further, “the EMM will implement water shedding measures and shut off supply from 10pm-3pm”.

STAROOT JOURNAL KASIE BIZ PROFILE

Water wise tips for your Small Business

Water, whether it’s used for industrial processes, restrooms, or cleaning and landscaping, is a large part of any business’s operating costs. But there are many ways to reduce your water use while meeting all of your business needs. Considerimplementing the following Water Wise tips in your business. Water conservation is everyone’s respon-sibility.

1. Educate your employees and customers

All businesses can encourage their employees to conserve water by training employees in water saving techniques and providing incentives for employees who develop water saving procedures. It is important to let your customers know that water conservation is a priority to your business. Lead by example and let them know what you do to con-serve will help encourage them to conserve as well.Raising staff awareness is one of the most cost ef-fective and sustainable ways to save water at your workplace. Simple ideas to help you save water at work include:

• Establishing an ideas box to encourage employees to suggest ways to save water;• Incorporating water conservation policies and procedures into employee training programs;• Using communication tools like bulletins, news-letters and emails to send ideas, announcements, progress reports and news of special achievements;• Encourage water conservation in the employee kitchen, locker rooms and restrooms, using notices that are changed regularly;

• Assign an employee to determine and moni-tor the quantity and purpose of water use and to identify water waste.• When cleaning with water, use budgeted amounts.• Encourage the reporting of leaks including those in ablutions.

2. Think smaller.

Many small offices have the same capacity

geyser that is used in homes. But there is no showering or laundry to be done, only light dishwashing. Therefore you can save costs by installing a smaller geyser better suited to your needs.

3. Have a water audit Conduct a water audit.

This will help you maximise your water use ef-ficiency. It also highlights were problems exist and assists in helping you fix them, thereby increasing your water savings.Keeping track of water used by measuring the meter during periods of no flow will allow you to track possible leaks. Monthly water audits also allow for the tracking of water use in differ-ent seasons.

4. Fix leaks.

Businesses can save money and water by moni-toring and repairing leaky faucets, toilets and pipes. Leaky or dripping toilets and faucets can waste thousands of litres a year. Each dripping tap can waste as much as 1Kl of water a month. Regular maintenance will eliminate water waste and lower your water bills. Have your water me-ter read monthly to monitor your water usage.

5. Replace water wasting equipment and fix-tures.

Install low-flow aerators on company faucets (taps) and you can cut faucet water consump-tion in half. This can significantly reduce your business’ water consumption. Toilets and urinals account for about one third of all water consumed in buildings. Install dual flush toilets and water efficient urinals. Use air-cooled icemachines. Replace air conditioners and refriger-

ation units that are cooled by water with those that are cooled by air.

6. Design and maintain water efficient landscaping.

It is a fact that smaller businesses with small landscapes are often bigger water wasters than larger businesses with larger gardens. Smaller businesses tend to over water their gardens.• Lawns require a deep watering once a week. Consider reducing your lawn areas as lawns are high water users.,medium and low water areas, allocates the plants accordingly and also sets the irrigation system watering times to match these zones.

7. Engage top management.

As with so many interventions in business, unless there is support and buy-in from top management, programs and interventions do not take off as they could. It is important that they support it with time and funds to make the necessary changes that will benefit the organi-sation in the long run.

8. Water saving tips for corporate.

• Verify that your business is leak-free, many businesses have hidden water leaks.

• Repair dripping faucets by replacing washers.

The important thing to remember is that every-one has a role to play in water conservation.

Saving water makes good business “cents
