Mika scared of snakes!

Tonight’s food trial on Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao was ‘Saap Re Saap’ as the name sug-gests, the celebrities were going to encoun-ter frightening snakes. Aakashh from the yel-low team and Mika from the red team were nominated for the task. The task was as fol-lows- A huge glass container was stuffed with a branch of tree and around 10 differ-ent kinds of ferocious snakes were crawling all over the glass contain-er, which had 4 round openings. Aakashh and Mika were told to put their hands inside these openings and col-lect stars in between all these snakes. There were small con-tainers inside, which also had stars, so they had to open them as well. All this had to be

done without taking off their hand from the glass bowl. The time limit was set at 15 mins. Bad boy Akasshh was maha active; he completed the task before time, our Mika paaji (who on any oth-

er occasion is as ferocious as a lion) was very scared and kept holding back. His performance was poor and he collected about 4-5 stars, while Aakashh was the win-ner with all 10 stars.

Bharat Ratna for Dilip Kumar: Bollywood rallies supportThe Indian film fraternity is trying to seek 100, 000 soli-darity comments on a social networking website to urge the government to confer the prestigious Bharat Ratna upon Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar. A community titled “Dilip Kumar for Bharat Ratna” on Facebook that now has over 850 members dedicated to the cause was started at the behest of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.Bhatt said he was not the only one who wishes that the 86-year-old be awarded the country’s highest civil-ian honour. “It is the entire industry’s effort. From every region, stalwarts have come out to appeal for him. I was just a foot soldier. It is the Indian film industry’s effort, not an individual’s effort, “ Bhatt told. The group has been primar-ily created to seek solidarity from people so that the ad-ministrators of the website can bind all the comments in a book and submit it to

the president and the prime minister. The members of the com-munity have been asked to “leave a com-ment or endorse by replying a one liner - ‘I endorse that Dilip Kumar is the most deserv-ing person to be honoured with the Bharat Ratna’”.Dilip Kumar, who is married to ac-tress Saira Bano, is known for his land-mark performanc-es in films like “Devdas”, “Mad-humati”, “Ganga Jamuna”, “Mughal-E-Azam”, “Shakti” and “Karma”.Many of his fans as well as mem-bers of the industry have put out individual com-ments. Posts like “Honouring Dilip Kumar is honouring Bolly-wood”, “He deserves Bharat Ratna. Period” and “Bharat Ratna....most certainly. He

is an icon in the truest sense of the word!” are splashed on the online community’s website.

Celebrities supporting the cause include actors like Rajeev Khandelwal, Mu-kul Dev, Shabbir Ahluwa-lia, Varun Badola, Randeep Hooda and Urvashi Dho-lakia. Film critic and film-

maker Khalid Mohammed, director Prabhakar Shukla and popular Bangladeshi singer Runa Laila have also joined the effort. “Dilip Kumar is one of the finest actors in the Indian film industry. He did only 64 films in his career and is still regarded as the best. He is like Lata Mangesh-kar, you won’t get another Lata...Similarly, you won’t get another Dilip Kumar. In the true sense, he is Bharat Ratna, “ said Shukla, known for his film “Gudiyaa”.Till date no actor has re-ceived the Bharat Ratna award. In 1992, acclaimed filmmaker Satyajit Ray was the first person from the en-tertainment industry to have been conferred the honour.Music greats like Carnatic music vocalist M.S. Sub-bulakshmi, sitar player Ravi Shankar, singer Lata Mangeshkar, shehnai mae-stro Bismillah Khan and classical singer Bhimsen Joshi became its proud re-cipients.

Business as usual: Rajus call shots behind bars tooHYDERABAD: Behind bars for more than six months now, Ramalinga Raju and his brother Rama Raju have been quietly building another empire in jail and have many followers. Reliable sources say the Rajus, whose judicial custody was on Wednesday extended till August 5, are enjoying a cushy life in Chanchalguda jail on the outskirts of Hyderabad with many comforts and con-nections with the outside world. ‘‘They have many undertrials including some resourceful ones at their beck and call. Many jail officials have fallen to the charms of the Rajus who are giving them useful tips on how to dabble in the stockmarket,’’ a jail official told TOI. He also claimed that the Rajus have access to a cellphone, but the veracity of the al-legation can’t be verified. ‘‘A lot of mar-ket trading is happening from within the jail premises with liberal doses of advice from the Rajus,’’ the sources claimed. Raju’s chief lieutenant in jail is a scam-ster called Krishi Venkateshwara Rao who was extradited from Thailand three years ago. Krishi, after embezzling Rs 50 crore from a cooperative bank that he ran, hid in Bangkok before being brought back. As ‘B-Class’ prisoners, the Rajus and the third accused Vadlamani Srinivas (former Satyam CFO) are entitled to fa-cilities that are the envy of other prison-ers. Cots, beds, fans, mosquito nets and

mosquito coils make their stay comfortable in the jail. For food, they have a choice of ei-ther chicken, mutton or fish everyday, and a cook dishes it out for them from a kitchen set up exclusively for them. Their cells are kept clean by two sweepers, while their clothes are washed by another. All these attendants are undertrials themselves. According to the jail sources, Krishi is guiding the Rajus by provid-ing strategic inputs about which jail official is soft and who is not. Also, he gives advise on how to deal with the jail officials and who can be helpful for what work. When asked about the Rajus having access to a cellphone, Chanchalguda jail superintendent M Chandrasekhar Rao denied it. ‘‘It is out of the question. Only mafia elements and goon-das have the expertise to smuggle in cellphones and use them without being caught. The Rajus will be easily caught if they attempt to do so. They are enjoying only the facilities that they are legally entitled to,’’ Rao told TOI. The special ‘B-Class’ status to the Rajus in the jail is as per the recommendations of the district collector of Hyderabad. The collector based his recommendations on the financial status of the Rajus and their educational back-ground.

Citi plans to sell 20 consumer finance businessesSINGAPORE: Citigroup plans to sell 20 business-es in consumer finance area, many of them located in Europe, its CEO Vikram Pandit said in an inter-view. He said the move was due to the shift in the

consumer finance market where ‘there is less funding availability and they are probably less robust as busi-nesses’. Pandit also said that the group’s capital position fol-lowing the completion of the exchange of preferred shares for common equity in July, reflected an incred-ible financial strength. ‘‘On the completion of our ex-change offer, we had 12.7% tier 1 capital and more than 9% tier 1 common capital,” Pandit said during his recent trip to Singapore. The New York-based bank had said in July that in-vestors have agreed to swap $32.8 billion of preferred securities for common stock, and the US government, which will officially take a 34% equity at the bank and become its largest shareholder, will swap $25 billion. The US third-largest lender conducted the offers after heavy credit losses and writedowns prompted a series of bailouts, including a $45 billion injection of tax-payer funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program. Citigroup reported a quarterly profit of $4.28 billion, compared to a year-earlier loss of $2.5 billion. The second-quarter was boosted by $6.7 billion gain from the sale of its Smith Barney brokerage. Without that one-off gain the lender would have reported a $3.7 bil-lion loss. ‘‘We’ve done a pretty good job in the first two quarters of this year,’’ Pandit said, adding, ‘‘but we got there after a lot of hardwork last year. We re-duced our assets by almost 25%. We reduced our risk by a lot more than that number. And we cut about $16 billion a year in expenses.’’ The new, restructured Citi will have three main lines of business of roughly equal size, which are a con-sumer bank, a securities bank, which will include in-vestment banking operation, and a financial service for business Pandit said its Asian operation, which generated $2.8 billion net income for the group’s global income or around 40%, will be a big part of the group’s future. Citigroup has also been overhauling its upper man-agement and board, adding seven new directors this year, and is trying to shed consumer finance, insurance and toxic assets.

Nandana Sen’s kiss gets a missNandana Sen is making news, why? Well because the pe-tite actress choose to scorch the screen by kissing co-star Anubhav Anand not one or two but three times!Nandana seems no holds barred when it comes to her on-screen image as a sexy diva and really didn’t seem to shy away from kissing a newcomer like Anubhav for her new film Perfect Mismatch. For her new flick Nandana shared three on-screen smooches with her co-star.But seems like even three time smooching didn’t prove lucky enough for Nandana Sen, as the filmmakers decided in the end to cut out the kissing scenes from the film Per-fect Mismatch, to make it a family entertainer. So eventu-ally in the end the whole kissing shots were edited from the film, well Nandana it was a Perfect Mismatch to begin with, kissing a newcomer for a family entertainer is a seri-ous no-no. Looks like someone is going Mallika Sherawat’s way. But then darling like they say if its too hot to handle then just give the kiss a miss!

Agyaat is only about sound effects: Priyanka KothariRGV is undoubtedly the only unique selling point of his forthcom-ing release Agyaat considering the star cast. And of-course his favorite genre hor-ror, which reminds us his masterpiece Bhoot, this definitely adds curiosity factor to the film. However, RGV’s fa-vorite girl Priyanka a.k.a Nisha Kothari has something else to

reveal and it might make you think twice before you shell out those bucks at the ticket counter to watch Ag-yaat.Let’s come to the point. When enquired about who finally is the Agyaat in the film, she confidently ex-claims, “Well, Agyaat is nothing but the sound ef-fects in the film. The bottom line of the story is- we are scared of some-thing till it does not appear before us. We are terrified

throughout the film and discover there was noth-ing to get scared of in the end. It’s all in our mind. So, it is dense scary jungle and sound effects, which eventually turns out to be Agyaat.”Wonder, whether Agyaat will really bring a chill down the audience’s spine, but one thing is for sure that Priyanka has had a huge experience, so nothing can scare her now. Wotsay say Priyanka?

Do you own a pair of Gladiators?

And they are making a pretty strong style statement. The funda, according to acces-sories designer Sonali Dal-wani, is more the straps on the shoes, better they look. Shoe designer Rina Shah agrees, “The style is very high on comfort as gladiator shoes give a perfect grip to the ankle. They are the perfect option for flip-flops which till recently were the choicest summer wear.”Not only is this foot-wear perfectly suited for our summer, but gladiator shoes also look good teamed with flirty dresses, sexy shorts, sensu-ous capris, slim fits pants, jeans, girlie skirts and even eveningwear.“They range from knee to mid-calf and ankle length, there’s a lot of flexibility,”

says accessories designer Hersh Kotecha. While Son-ali believes the bootie style gladiator sandals are best for Indian weather conditions.“One happening trend is to

have a play of colours and different embellishments on a single pair,” Sonali says. From delicate, embellished metallics to warrior-woman, war-like boots, with even the heels seeing a super sexy metamorphosis from origi-

nal flats to chunky, aggres-sive platforms, wedges and stilettos. And the material varies from faux leather to satin, silk, suede and other synthetic materials.

Last year the trend was all about pretty, dainty shoes with plenty of bling. But now people are done with bling. Gladi-ator shoes are practical and comfort-able, and the combinat ion of leather and

buckles looks great, femi-nine and at the same time, bold. “Last but not the least, the gladiator style covers but at the same time leaves a lot of skin exposed,” says shoe designer Samir.

Gladiators are putting their best foot forward. Gladiator-styled sandals and shoes are offi-cially the ‘it’ footwear this season

Aamir Khan gives thumbs down to Imran in LuckLuck may have not exactly worked out on the box office as well as it was expected to be, considering the big names and huge budget the film was associated with; but well there has finally been one silver lining. The hard to impress Aamir

Khan has apparently en-joyed the performance of one actor from the film. Well if you think it is of his nephew Imran Khan’s then well you are wrong! A source reveals, “Last weekend Aamir visited a suburban Mumbai cinema

hall with nephew Imran to watch Luck. While Aamir didn’t really enjoy the film, he really liked the performance of Sanjay Dutt. In fact it is learnt that he even called Dutt and told him about that, post the show.”

Well we don’t know what was Aamir’s opinion about his nephew’s much criti-cized act in Luck, but one actor who would definitely be smiling is Sanjay Dutt, after all praise came for him from none other than the over critical Aamir Khan who likes to keep even his likes and dislikes private.

Match-fixing has returned to haunt the game of cricket and this time it is the Paki-stani cricketers who are fac-ing the heat after a disastrous tour of Sri Lanka. Former Pakistan chief se-lector Abdul Qadir made startling allegations, saying Pakistani players are linked to Indian bookies. It came to light during the tour of Sri Lanka with sto-ries of Pakistani players being approached by suspi-cious Indians, as reported by

manager Saeed Yawar. Pakistan Cricket Board has taken strict action in its bid to come clean from the match-fixing allegations. Sources within PCB told Times Now that people who are key sus-pects had approached the

Pakistan players during the series in Sri Lanka. These people have been following the team for the last three tours. It is also indicated that strict action would be taken against Pakistan team man-ager in Sri Lanka, Yawar Saeed. As contradicting reports emerged during the tour, the report came to light with ICC sources confirming to Times Now that they will look into the incident after the PCB had informed the parent governing body re-

garding suspicious incidents during the tour. The report gained further prominence with former Pakistani chief selector Ab-dul Qadir accusing the team of having fixed matches in Sri Lanka. Qadir also lashed out at the team for its pathet-ic display during the tour. The emerging Indian an-gle to the incident is the most disturbing. As more and more Indian bookies’ names have been revealed in the match-fixing cases in

the recent times. Talking to Times Now, Abdul Qadir maintained his statement and confirmed the reports. Qadir speaking exclusively to Times Now on the match-fixing said, “This is a sen-sitive issue. One has to be

careful. Whatever I said if it is correct of incorrect, I do it professionally.” Salman Ahmed, who is an agent who represents a few Pakistani players also con-firmed the Indian angle to reports. Ahmed told Times Now, he had seen Indian bookies during various tours and also during the multi-mil-lion Indian Premier League. Pakistan players’ agent, Sal-man Ahmad, speaking ex-clusively to Times Now on the entire controversy said, “I can identify the people

Indian Bookies involved in match-fixing in Lanka: Report

who were around when there was Indian Premier League. They were the same people when South Africa was play-ing in Pakistan. These are the same people who were in Sri Lanka when Pakistan was playing its matches. These people were there when teams like Mumbai, Punjab or any other team was playing. These were the same people during the time of Asia Cup also. From their faces, one could identify that they were from India. I am

on a flight to Colombo and unless I see them tomorrow in Colombo I cannot com-ment further. When I iden-tify, the relevant authorities will get to know.” Cricket journalist of Sri Lanka, Rex Clementine,

speaking to Times Now said that this is nothing much to worry about. He said, “A few Indians were spotted at the place where Pakistan players were put up. From that day, these reports were coming out. Once it becomes official, the situation will be alarming. Right now, it is all unconfirmed. The security around the players is very tight. One cannot approach the players easily because they have been guarded by special forces.”

Drink water for wrinkle-free skin!Scientists have recently identified 1,500 genes that determine how long people can keep their youthful looks, and found that there are eight ways in which skin ages, each controlled by different sets of genes. However, one of the most important aspects is how well the skin gathers and retains water. According to a study, up to 700 genes that help keep the skin hydrated become less active and less able to retain water as the cells get older, and thus lead to wrinkles. Another factor is the levels of collagen, a molecule that gives the skin structure and strength. The genes that degrade it become overactive in old-er age, which also leads to wrinkles. It has been found that there are about 40 genes that accelerate breakdown. Wrinkles are also attributed to inflammation, which is affected by about 400 genes, and be-comes more ac-tive with age. Scientists at Procter & Gam-ble say that they carried out this study to deter-mine why some people seem to age faster. The researchers have revealed that they used the results and techniques from

the Genome Project, the 2billion-dollar international pro-gramme aimed at mapping human DNA. “Genomics is an exciting area of research. It’s allowing an unparalleled level of understanding of the causes of skin ageing which we are able to apply to creating products that were never possible before,” the Daily Express quoted principal sci-entist Dr. Sian Morris as saying. Skin therapist Louise Thomas-Minns added: “Although some of the ageing process is determined by genetics, that is only around 30 per cent. The other 70 per cent is not written entirely in our genes which means that we can affect it by looking after our skin. Fluid is vital to allow-ing the skin enzymes to shed and renew which is why we often don’t look too good after a big night out.”

While fishing, the old man starts talking about how times have changed. The young man picks up on this and starts talking about the various problems and diseases going around.Teen says, “Grandpa, they didn’t have a whole lot of problems with all these diseases when you were young did they?”Grandpa replies, “Nope.”Teen says, “Well, what did you guys use for safe sex?”Grandpa replies, “A wedding ring.”

Pathan has a Pass: One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along the route. No problems for the first few stops - a few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well.At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a Pathan got on. Six feet four, built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the conductor and said, “Pathan doesn’t pay!” and sat down at the back.Conductor didn’t argue with Pathan, but he wasn’t happy about it. The next day the same thing happened – Pathan got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the next. This grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Pathan was taking ad-vantage of poor conductor. Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body build-ing courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff.By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong; what’s more, he felt really good about himself. So, on the next Monday, when Pathan once again got on the bus and said, “Pathan doesn’t pay!”The driver stood up, glared back at Pathan, and screamed, “And why not?”With a surprised look on his face, Pathan replied, “Pathan has a bus pass.”Management Lesson: Be sure there is a problem in the first place before working hard to solve one.

Late Night Party: The mother and father had just given their teenage daughter family-car privileges. On Saturday night she returned home very late from a party. The next morning her father went out to the driveway to get the newspaper and came back into the house frowning. At 11:30 AM the girl sleepily walked into the kitchen, and her father asked her, “Sweetheart, what time did you get in last night?”“Not too late, Dad.” she replied nervously.Dead-panned, her father said, “Then, my precious one, I’ll have to talk with the paperboy about putting my paper under the front tire of the car.”

Aishwarya happy with two mega southern projectsBollywood actress Aish-warya Rai is elated over bag-ging the main leads in two mega south Indian projects - Mani Ratnam’s “Ravan” and Shankar’s “Endhiran”.“Shankar had approached me previously to work with him, but it never materia-lised. Finally, everything landed in place and here we are working together after 10 years, “ said Aishwarya on the sets of “Ravan”.Tamil superstar Rajinikant, who is playing the male lead in “Endhiran”, was also very keen to work with Aish-warya and had tried to sign her for his earlier ventures - “Padaiyappa” and “Chan-dramukhi”, but the actress could not spare the dates.

Speaking about Ratnam’s “Ravan”, in which she once again teams up with her husband Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya said: “I don’t want to reveal much about it. Work-ing with Mani is al-ways a delight. He is a man of perfection. I am lucky to act in his movies again and again.” Aishwarya was ear-lier seen in Ratnam’s “Iruvar” and “Guru”, in which Abhishek was in the main lead. While shooting for “Ravan” in the jun-gles of Kerala, the entire cast and crew

had a scary experience when an elephant ran amok and killed 51-year-old mahout Andavan. The actors including Abhishek, Aishwarya, Vikram, Prabhu and Munna had to take shel-ter in a guest house. According to sources, the film personalities spent the night in the forest guest house and survived on bread and eggs. After 12 hours of tension and waiting, the crew returned to their hotel. Now the cast and crew of “Ravan” has moved to Ooty where the re-maining portions of the film will be shot.

MOVIE TALK

Till a few weeks ago, no one expected a Saif Ali Khan starrer to gross as much as Aamir (GHAJINI), SRK (RAB NE BANA DI JODI) and Akshay (SINGH IS KINNG, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ) starrers. But LOVE AAJ KAL has made its way into the Top 5 openers of all times (opening weekend).Several factors have led to the staggering start of this film...* A sought-after actor’s home-production always generates heat, prior to its release.* The novel casting (Saif and Deepika were teamed for the first time).* Pritam’s fabulous musi-cal score.* Imtiaz Ali - a name that has earned tremendous respect and goodwill after JAB WE MET.* The terrific promotion em-barked upon by its makers. Quality-wise as also quanti-ty-wise, LOVE AAJ KAL is amongst the best publicized films in recent times. That LOVE AAJ KAL has fared exceptionally well in its opening weekend, is old news. With a fantabulous Rs. 28 crores nett generated in its first three days, the

film stands tall in box-office rankings, after GHAJINI. Multiplexes have been huge, while single screens (of ‘A’ class centres) have been good.Single screens at smaller centres, of course, haven’t been energetic, but the vol-ume of business at plexes is so huge that Eros should re-cover a substantial chunk of investment from India theat-rical distribution.

A tiny section of the audi-ence feels that Imtiaz Ali’s JAB WE MET was a better film. Opinions may vary and differ, but the fact remains that the youth has gone ga-ga over LOVE AAJ KAL. In times to come, LOVE AAJ KAL should also enjoy a tre-mendous shelf life when its DVD hit the stores. Business-wise, of course, there’s no comparison with

JAB WE MET. LOVE AAJ KAL is miles ahead and like everyone agrees, everything boils down to how rosy your balance sheet looks at the end of the day. Box-office is king! The naysayers had predicted doomsday for the film on Day 1 itself, but changed their tune soon. Then they predicted that LOVE AAJ KAL would collapse from Monday onwards. Sure there

has been a 60% drop in several circuits from Mon-day onwards, but let’s not forget that the film is play-ing in multiple shows (22, 24, 26, even 28) even on weekdays. The drop was inevitable. However, the business is expected to show a big jump today (Raksha Band-han holiday) and the col-lections, as I see it, should

be super-strong today. In the final tally, I’d say that the domestic business coupled with the roaring in-ternational business should ensure an easy recovery for its principal distributors. The revenue generated from Satellite and Home Video should only add to the booty. Business-wise, this one’s a success story!

Massive numbers for LOVE AAJ KAL
