READ THE LATEST NEWS EACH TERM
Welcome to the first issue of Melksham Oak Sports News. For the fore-
seeable future we hope to use this newsletter to help our students cele-
brate their sporting success both in school and outside of school
hours.
Since September we have had a number of sporting achievements some of
which may have been forgotten about or not reported on.
Melksham Oak Sports News has bought together a number of students who
have volunteered to report, photograph and video sporting events so that
sporting events can be celebrated.
Working with the media department we hope in the future to create our own
YouTube channel to show highlights of our sporting events. We also give
updates on twitter so why not give us a follow.
If you have any sporting achievements that students or staff would like to
share please email them to [email protected].

PE STAR OF THE TERM AWARD
2
This academic year the PE department decided to adopt Mr Wolff’s great Idea of awarding a star of the
term for high effort levels and achievement in the subject.
Each member of PE staff nominates 3 students a term and a winner is picked at random. The overall
winner receives a prize.
All students who have been nominated this year can be seen below. This is also displayed around the
school on the TV’s to help celebrate the success of our students both in lessons and also highlighting
their commitment to extra curriculum sport.
Well done to all who have been nominated.
Keep up the good work.

SPORT LEADERS GET A LESSON FROM
GB’S FASTEST SNOWBOARDER
On 24th March our sports leaders were invited to join Great
Britain's fastest snowboarder Jamie Barrow on the Mendip out-
door ski slope for a snowboarding lesson.
Jamie is a sky sports mentor who travels to schools passing on
his knowledge of leadership and motivation.
He has his own story of how he battles with a debilitating back
condition to do what he loves. Jamie challenges himself and is
sponsored by Red Bull to participate in high risk stunts, his latest
and most dangerous being towed behind an aeroplane on a fro-
zen lake.
We hope that Jamie has inspired our sports leaders to push
themselves to the limits and believe that the impossible can be
possible if you put in the effort.
Congratulations to all who took part you were a credit to the
school.
WHAT IS A SPORTS
LEADER?
Our PE department run a
sports leadership incentive
sponsored by sky sports
that gives students the
opportunity to develop
their leadership skills.
Students from years 7-9
were given the opportunity
to apply at the beginning
of the year to be a sports
leader for the year. They
are then tasked with com-
pleting certain criteria all
linked to developing their
leadership skills.
In the past this has really
helped students develop
and also given them some-
thing extra to put on their
CV.
These students will contin-
ue to be sports leader next
year and help out new year
7 applicants.

and they hope to take part in more competitions next
year, they did participate in one match this year ending
in a narrow loss by one rounder to Matravers.

again in the summer term 2018. We hope to see you

this year, they have
been fantastic”

Williams
“ Such a great feeling to win a trophy with all my school mates under great guid-ance by Mr Collins our hero, leader and inspiration” Jordan C
The year 11 football team had another successful year under the ‘innovative’ man-
agement style of Mr Collins. The season kicked off with an English School’s FA
cup game against old rivals Sheldon. Despite a good performance the team were
defeated by the better side on the day. This spurred the boys on to play for the title
of ‘Area Champions 2017’. They began the league campaign with a convincing 6-2
win against Matravers and went unbeaten against all other opponents in West
Wiltshire, finishing the league off with a re-match against St. Laurence on home
turf with an easy win to take the West Wilts title. The team went on to the Area
finals, playing at Stanley Park against Devizes. A brilliant 5-4 win where the score
line flattered the opposition, saw the boys retain their title as best team in the area
for another year running. Great work from a talented group of players. Mr Collins
wishes them the best for the future and looks forward to receiving 10% of all earn-
ings once signed on for their first club!

Lavington turned up with 10 players, yet still played a solid game. Wasn’t
enough to stop the Melksham boys from scoring 2 MOTM- Tommy

Overall we deserved the win; however the high scoring game shows the
threat from both teams. MOTM- Jack B

A real tough game for both sides, however a tough Kingdown side were able
to comeback from a two-goal deficit. MOTM- Ethan N

should have scored more. MOTM- Brandon M

“ A superb effort from one of our sixth form students, paving the way for others to aspire to” Mr Collins—Head of PE
Melksham Oak sixth form student Alexan-dra S has been taking part in Taekwondo-do for about 8 years, and has reached red belt with black tag. Her next step is to gain her black belt.
Alexandra has had another good year. Com-peting in many national and international competitions with great results.
During her time taking part in Taekwondo she has achieved both national and interna-tionally here are a list of her achievements:
Double Vice Poland Champion
Double Vice World Champion,
British Champion
3rd in England and South West
Champion of South West .
We would like to congratulate Alexandra in achieving and maintaining such high levels of perfor-mance, and showing that Melksham Oak students can compete at the top level.
Well done to all year 9 netball players this year on another very successful season.
The girls committed to training worked incredibly hard displaying great enthusiasm and team spirit.
Their approach paid off winning all but one of their matches throughout the season.
The team took back their reputation of being a for-midable team in the area by taking back their lead and finishing in top position in the West Wiltshire year 9 tournament.
A super well done to the team, Molly C, Kia , Daisy H, Sophie M, Billy C, Kay-la D, Cerys P, Kalia P, Am-ber R, Nicole P, Sadie and Nicole H and to all those that trained, your coach couldn’t be more proud.

“Well done to all year 9 players on a very suc-cessful year” Mrs Sawyer
On Saturday 8th July more than 60 students took part in a 12 hour Sporta-
thon that saw them compete in sporting activities from 8am-8pm.
The aim was to raise as much mon-
ey as we could for The Wiltshire Air
ambulance, this is a local charity
that receives no government fund-
ing and will be our local ambulance
station when they move to their
new airbase in Semington in 2018.
Each student was sponsored and
raised at least £10 to last the dura-
tion of the event which sounds easi-
er than it was.
The first few hours were good with
mass participation and students choosing to participate in either tennis
or a football tournament.
However with the temperature rising
to nearly 30°C, students, teachers
and volunteers were struggling to
keep hydrated. Mr Wolff had organised a barbeque so some broke
for lunch whilst the games continued around them.
The effort from the students was amazing and they finally finished
the day with a 25 yard football shoot out. Everyone we spoke to en-
joyed the event but needed Sunday to recover.
A massive thank you to everyone who took part and helped organise the event, the students have man-
aged to raise over £2000. Some of the students who stayed for the whole 12 hours will be selected to
visit the Wiltshire Air Ambulance base to present a cheque in the coming weeks.

AREA ATHLETICS AT
BATH UNIVERSITY
9
We had another fantastic day at Bath University when over 50 students participated in the annual area
athletics championships.
This is always a great opportunity for our students to participate on a professional track where the Great
Brittan athletes train on a regular basis. The facilities excellent and this is often where future athletes are
spotted and invited to train with team Bath.
This year students teams were selected from those who did well in events taught in their PE lessons and
also those who attended after school athletics club on a regular basis.
We have some outstanding athletes in our school, and are now starting to nurture them, getting them to
believe that they can be the best in the county and beyond if they train hard and believe in themselves.
All the students performed to the best of their ability and we had a number of top three finishes. However
two athletes who deserve a special mention are Evisha P (Year 7) and James W (Year 10) who both won
their events.
Evisha won the 100m sprint and was selected to represent North
Wilts at the County Championships. While James managed to win
the 800m for the third successive year, this is a great achievement
showing commitment and dedication to the event. The next step is
for both athletes to push themselves to the next level and try to lead
our team to another successful meet next year.
Well done to everyone who took part. They are now helping to show
that Melksham Oak produces superb athletes who are proud to rep-
resent the school.
Free after school sports clubs JUST BRING YOUR KIT AND JOIN IN
The PE department have put together a timetable for a range of sports that students can experi-
ence from Monday-Thursday each week.
These clubs are for any student in the school to challenge themselves in sports that they may not
get the chance to in lessons. This also gives the students the opportunity to represent the school in
fixtures and competitions against other schools.
It would be great to see each student attending at least one club and help us continue the sporting
success at the school.
