INTRODUCTION .
Stanley Cooperman was born on October 22, 1929, in New York City . He
received his B .A. at New York University and his Ph.D. at the University
of Indiana where he taught for a number of years . He was later to hold
teaching positions at Tehran University, the University of Oregon ,
Hofstra University, and Simon Fraser University, where he was a pro-
fessor of English from 1969—1976 .
During his early university years he earned many as a journal-
ist and freelance writer, taking up the writing of poetry later in hi s
career. After many years of extensive travel, he finally settled in
North Vancouver with his wife, Jenifer . Together they had two child-
ren: a daughter, Galila—Yael, and a son, Amichai .
In the course of his teaching career he was awarded a grea t
number of fellowships and grants including a Research Grant from
Simon Fraser University in 1967 and two Canada Council Grants, on e
in 1967 and the other in 1975 0
In his lifetime he published five books, four volumes of poetr y
and one critical work, World War I and the American Novel . His un-
timely suicide in 1976 occurred while his fifth volume of poetry ,
Canadian Gothic and Other Poems, was at the press . Greco's Last
Boo , a volume of Cooperman's poems selected by Fred Candelaria ,
was published by Intermedia Press in 1980 in memory of the poet .
Cooperman's papers were donated to the U .B .G . library by hi s
wife, Jenifer Cooperman, in 1983 . The poetry series is of particular
interest since Cooperman wrote several drafts of each poem befor e
settling on a final version. Although Cooperman is best known for
his poetry, there are also a great number of essays and plays to b e
found in this collection as well as some tapes of the poet readin g
his work.
