BARBARA A. MCK INZIEINTERNATIONAL SUPREME BASILEUS
Dear Sorors:
It is indeed, A New Day! It’s time to renew our minds and our hearts with great expectations forour sisterhood! It’s time to get back to the basic principles of our Founders! It’s time to get tothe real business of our great Sisterhood! How do we do it? We effectively guide, evaluate andeducate ourselves based on our operational standards and procedures.
We must be confident in knowing that we intend to operate effectively and efficiently, chapter-by-chapter and soror-by-soror. By taking an individual and group approach, we will end up witha holistically sound organization. To that end, we need our entire membership to adopt and fullyparticipate in the International Standards Committee’s goal of “improving chapter operationsand procedures through internal and external standardized evaluations.”
This guide, as developed by the International Standards Committee, is designed based on ourConstitution and Bylaws and Manual of Standard Procedure. Sorors, we have worked to makethe evaluation process more efficient. Feel confident in knowing that we are merely movingtoward A New Day of renewing, revitalizing and therefore savoring the heritage of our Sorority.
Our wonderful International Standards Committee has labored LONG, HARD ANDVOLUNTARILY to prepare this guide; therefore, it is my sincere hope that you will utilize theprocesses herein to improve and maintain the effective operations of your chapters. Please joinme in saying THANK YOU AND WE LOVE YOU to the best Centennial Standards Committeethis Sisterhood has produced.

strategic evaluations, and (3) positive development.

The Meaning of Chapter Operations
Chapter Operations is the process we use in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to conduct our businessand to successfully accomplish our goals. Standards ensure the efficient and effective executionof the work to be done by members in the name of our organization. The standards for operatingare documented to foster consistent practices and procedures within each chapter. Everymember of Alpha Kappa Alpha is responsible for knowing how we should operate and beingcommitted to the proper execution of the tasks required.
Chapter Operations are enhanced when leaders and followers know the rules, regulations andguidelines. The Standards Committee, internationally, regionally and locally, exists to improvechapter operations and procedures through internal assessments and external standardizedevaluations.
Planning is the management tool that helps us do a better job. It does the following: Helps us to organize Allows us to conduct our business in an orderly manner Enhances our ability to exhibit respect for all members Ensures that all members are working toward the same goal Permits us to access and adjust the direction of our organization,
should the need ariseGood planning begins with assessment and leads to evaluation. Evaluation, in turn, providesinputs for a continuing cycle of planning and improvement.
