Diabetes mellitus (high blood sugar levels), is
one of the oldest metabolic disorders known to
mankind.
All the renowned classic texts of Ayurveda like
Charaka Samhita (1000 B.C.), Sushruta Samhita
(600 B.C.) and subsequent works refer to this
disorder under the term Madhumeha (meaning
sugar in the urine).
Ayurvedic physic ians have treated
Madhumeha for thousands of years using a
combination of regulated lifestyle and herbal
drugs.
In recent years, scientists in their search for
alternative medicine to manage healthy blood
sugar levels have performed detailed
investigations on several herbs used traditionally
in Ayurveda.
