“America’s First” - the fi rst complete set on cover from the Americas - Estimate € 500’000 - 750’000Lot 20103 - Realised € 824’000 (US $1’162’000) - a new World Record for Latin America

Fervent bidding, intense at times, and strong demand for items throughout the week - with prices often exceeding estimates by several times. Sweden, Scandinavia and Finland led the way, with collector demand for choice and rare items refl ected in outstanding results for items at every estimate level. From the “Kristall” Collection, there was not one unsold lot! Switzerland surprised all with the strong prices obtained throughout for 19th century material; Collections, Lots & Estates, as always, saw furious competition for many of the lots.

The Meyer family holdings of choice Brazil attracted internet bidders and agents representing customers from throughout the world, crowned with the result shown above. Austrian Levant, particularly for Offi ces in Romania, brought some exceptional realisations, as did some of the Greece lots, while British Empire continued strong.

The semi-annual offer of Rarities of the World saw some amazing prices, as strong bidding focused on Ceylon, India, Mauritius, Romania and several other areas, including important specialised collections offered intact.

All week, the internet was an important presence in the auction room, completely dominating the bidding for some areas, and winning a record percentage and volume of lots. The internet made possible our remote bidding room in Stockholm, which was very important throughout the auction of the “Kristall” Sweden and other Scandinavia plus Finland.

David Feldman October 2-6, 2007 Auctions: Strong Results & Often Intense BiddingBreathtaking and often intense bidding (and results) for the latest auctions held by us in Geneva, Switzerland (with live participation world-wide via the Internet) underscored the wide demand for interesting, exotic, rare and beautiful stamps and postal history from every area of philately - and set one greatly important NEW WORLD RECORD (see below). A few of many good results (including buyer’s fees):

SWEDEN; SCANDINAVIA & FINLAND - The UNIQUE 1857 Cover with 54sk franking to St. Bart’s, West Indies: € 203’150 (US $286’440) - 1855 4sk mint pair, corner margins: € 65’725 (US $92’675) - 1862-66 Lions, registered cover to Germany with three 17ö: € 40’630 (US $57’290) - 1874-77 Offi cials, fi ve different imperforate blocks of four: € 38’240 (US $53’920)Similar strong levels prevailed for most of the other Scandinavia and Finland lots, with specialised collections often bringing at least three to fi ve times estimate after strong competition from buyers who had the chance to view them.

EMPIRE OF BRAZIL - THE MEYER COLLECTION - The UNIQUE “America’s First” complete set cover, franked with all three of the famous 1843 “Bull’s Eyes” and part of the Meyer family Holdings since 1975, brought € 824’500 (US $1’162’000) - among the WORLD RECORDS for any Latin America item, and one of the top realisations ever for a cover at auction.

SWITZERLAND - Zurich 4r print variety on cover: CHF 47’800 (US $40’630) - “Double Geneva” cover: CHF 77’675 (US $66’025) and off-cover reversed pair (normal left side at right, etc.): CHF 95’600 (US $81’260)Plenty of strong bids in the auction room and on the Internet carried nearly every lot to a level not seen for many years, especially for items of quality and visual appeal.

ALL-WORLD & COLLECTIONS - Great Britain £5 Orange mint, corner margins: € 10’755 (£7’420) - Austrian Levant cover with 342 soldi total franking: € 43’020 (US $60’660) - Austria 1st Issue registered cover used from Giurgevo, Romania: € 52’580 (US $74’135) - France 1st Issue cover with fi ve 1Fr + 25c pair used to Prussia: € 26’290 (US $37’070); Napoleon imperfs cover to Sweden franked by three Republic 10c + 1Fr Empire: € 47’800 (US $67’400) - Greece 1st issue 10L mint block of 4 with inverted “1” on reverse at one position: € 35’850 (US $50’550) - Greece 1861 20L Athens Provisional (quadrille background) used on cover: € 59’750 (US $84’250) - Poland 1860 10k used on cover to Romania: € 13’145 (US $18’535)

Once again, interesting, attractive and “fresh to the market” items brought strong interest and solid bids. The operative adage seemed to be, “I would rather have stamps than money” as the action continued in the Collections section as well. Often, ten or more different bidders would collide on a lot, and the outcomes throughout the section often brought great surprises!

RARITIES OF THE WORLDA few of many outstanding results:

- Austria 1878 parcel wrapping with 818 kr. total franking: € 38’240 (US $53’920) - Classic Ceylon had three results of note: 1859 cover with 2d and rare 4d used to England brought € 65’725 (US $92’675); mint 8d with star wmk (SG 7) went for € 47’800 (US $67’400) and similar mint 9d (SG 8) was fi nally sold for € 52’580 (US $74’140) after intense bidding from several bidders in the room. - India’s famous 1854 4a “inverted head” brought € 38’240 (US $53’920) for a cut-to-shape example, while the 1848 Gandhi Offi cial set soared to € 53’580 (US $75’550; £36’970) and a specialised collection of Jammu & Kashmir went for € 89’625 (US $126’370) - Among Romania lots, a cover with the 54p “Bull” of 1858 brought € 52’580 (US $74’140) and an 1871 registered cover with 465 bani total franking reached € 33’460 (US $47’180)Keen interest and strong bidding were evident throughout, including for several valuable collections offered intact.
