The Stamford Voice A letter from The Stamford School Director Hello everyone and welcome to the first edition of The Stamford Voice .We hope you enjoy reading our students’ articles which were produced in class during the last academic year. Unfortunately, we could only choose a selection from the many valid contributions but we hope to include more in the following editions! This year will be our 11 th year in Palmi and our 14 th year in Rosarno teaching English to students of all ages who come from over 26 towns nearby! I am so proud of all our students; I feel they really represent the very best of Ca- labria: hard-working, clever, deter- mined, funny and creative. To- gether, they not only produce ex- cellent exam results but also a positive, dynamic atmosphere in our schools which makes teaching and studying a real pleasure. Coinciding with the 100 year anni- versary of Cambridge English, the Stamford School has become a Cambridge Computer Test Centre which means our students can now take their international exams ( A2 – C2) on the computer as well as the traditional paper-based version. We have had some won- derful results, in particlular 3 of our adult A2 and B1 classes who distinguished themselves with an incredible 100% pass rate in their Cambridge exams! Well done guys! Of course, The Stamford isn’t just about obtaining prestigious inter- national certificates! It’s really about having fun and successful communicating in another language. Last year, our students enjoyed cookery lessons, studying in Eng- land, creating strange inventions, welcoming English guests including one of the Queen’s Guards, win- ning scholarships to top schools in England and even getting a top job in London! I can’t quite believe so many years have passed since we first opened our doors and wondered nervously if anyone was interested in learn- ing English with mother tongue teachers! The time has flown by for me thanks to the wonderful teaching team I am so lucky to have at school but, above all, thanks to our students ! Thanks for all your hard work, guys. The Stamford Voice

A letter from

The Stamford

School Director

Hello everyone and welcome to the

first edition of The Stamford

Voice .We hope you enjoy reading

our students’ articles which were

produced in class during the last

academic year. Unfortunately, we

could only choose a selection from

the many valid contributions but

we hope to include more in the

following editions!

This year will be our 11th year in

Palmi and our 14th year in Rosarno

teaching English to students of all

ages who come from over 26

towns nearby! I am so proud of all

our students; I feel they really

represent the very best of Ca-

labria: hard-working, clever, deter-

mined, funny and creative. To-

gether, they not only produce ex-

cellent exam results but also a

positive, dynamic atmosphere in

our schools which makes teaching

and studying a real pleasure.

Coinciding with the 100 year anni-

versary of Cambridge English, the

Stamford School has become a

Cambridge Computer Test Centre

which means our students can now

take their international exams

( A2 – C2) on the computer as

well as the traditional paper-based

version. We have had some won-

derful results, in particlular 3 of

our adult A2 and B1 classes who

distinguished themselves with an

incredible 100% pass rate in their

Cambridge exams! Well done guys!

Of course, The Stamford isn’t just

about obtaining prestigious inter-

national certificates! It’s really

about having fun and successful

communicating in another language.

Last year, our students enjoyed

cookery lessons, studying in Eng-

land, creating strange inventions,

welcoming English guests including

one of the Queen’s Guards, win-

ning scholarships to top schools in

England and even getting a top job

in London!

I can’t quite believe so many years

have passed since we first opened

our doors and wondered nervously

if anyone was interested in learn-

ing English with mother tongue

teachers! The time has flown by

for me thanks to the wonderful

teaching team I am so lucky to

have at school but, above all,

thanks to our students ! Thanks

for all your hard work, guys. I

can’t wait to start this new aca-

demic year with you all again!

PALMI - February 14th

Valentine’s Day is the lover’s

day. During the day girls and

boys give romantic gifts and

sweet things to declare their

love. The most common gifts

are chocolates, flowers

(especially roses) and

romantic notes. Some Italian

cities organize parties in the

local square or festivals

where people can take part in

games such as ‘the longest

kiss’. These days, Valentine’s

Day is also celebrated on

social networks where there

are three kinds of people;

those who write “I love you”

and tag their lover in the post,

those who write ‘I hate this

day’ and are sad and lastly

those who fake indifference.

The best are the people that

say “I celebrate my lover

every day!’

PALMI - January

Last year a local man who

works with animals had an

idea to improve the gardens

of ‘La Casa della Cultura’

where a lot of people take

their animals. He spoke to lots

of people and collected many

signatures which were

delivered to the Mayor so he

could understand the situation

and do something to improve

the gardens. Unfortunately,

the Mayor thought that the

work would be a waste of

time. However, he said he

would consider the request.

We are still waiting on a

decision as the situation is

getting worse at the park. My

friend still believes in the

cause.

PALMI - March 17th

Palmi’s Carnival is one of the

best and biggest festivals in

this area. This year, the

carnival was on Sunday 17th

March, one week later than

the rest of Italy. On that day

many people came to Palmi

and floats from all over the

region arrived to take part in

this important competition.

Each year judges have to

decide which is the best of all

of the masked floats in this

competition. You shouldn’t

miss this crazy day in Palmi!

COSENZA

A man stole the silver

crown of the statue of Our

Lady of the Rosary in the

church of San Domenico

in Cosenza. Then

he repented, asked for

forgiveness to the Bishop

and attempted to recover the

crown, under pressure from

the police. As he was only

sixteen years old measures

against him

weren't adopted because

of his repentance. The

crown of the Neapolitan

school dates from early

800AD.

CITTANOVA

A congress of high school

students met on 23rd

January

2013 in Cittanova to debate

biodiversity. During the

debate it was said that

“Biodiversity of animals and

plants can help us to

understand and save the

earth”. A lot of the problems in

the world are caused by

humans; population increases

are changing the habitat of

lots of animals which will

cause extinction. Biodiversity

is really important and we

have to do all we can to

preserve it.

ROSARNO

For about three months in

Rosarno all the wheelie-bins

were overflowing with rubbish

that covered the roads. It's

known that in the whole of

Calabria the collection service

was in crisis because the

landfills had been closed

since November. So the

whole Calabrian territory has

paid a high price because of

the environmental pollution

and because of the sanitary

problems caused by the

rubbish accumulated along

the roads. It's thought that the

solution could be the

construction of an incinerator

but in my opinion I think that

there are things we can all do

to help and the most

important is to recycle.

Reading is a fundamental part

of language learning and it is

an area which, here at The

Stamford School, we are

dedicated to improving.

Scientific research has proven

that the more a child reads,

the better their language

becomes, whether it be in

their first language or the

acquisition of foreign

languages. Reading

stimulates creativity,

increases vocabulary and

gives students a real sense of

achievement. At both of our

schools we have a wide range

of books, suitable for every

age and ability, which our

students can borrow in order

to develop their language

skills. In classes, our

teachers present an

interesting variety of texts

which perform a variety of

functions as well as providing

interesting stimulus for

discussion. Not only do we

have library books but we

also have a wide range of

DVDs available in English

which provide an interesting

way to learn new vocabulary

and improve listening skills.

So what are you waiting for?

Take out a book or a DVD

and improve your English!

The benefits of reading

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

In this adventure novel by

Jonas Jonasson, fiction and

reality are mixed to set up an

amazing and intriguing story.

The story is mainly set in the

west of Europe where the

main character, Allan

Karlsson, lives. In fact he is

an odd Swedish man whose

100th birthday is supposed to

be celebrated in the nursing

home where Allan has lived

for several years. It would

have been a perfect day, if

only Allan hadn’t decided it

was time to start living again.

Still wearing his slippers, he

jumps from his bedroom

window and vanishes. From

here a whole new life of

adventure begins.

With Allan being not only the

main character but also the

narrator, the result is a book

full of details which keep the

reader entertained. Using

flashbacks, Allan tells the true

story hidden behind invented

elements which make the

readers laugh.

If I have to find criticism, I’d

find fault with the narrative

jumping too often from the

present to the past so it is

difficult to understand what he

is referring to. Murders, theft

and the reunion of new and

old friends make this book a

funny version of a thriller,

perfect for all those people

who believe in happy endings.

scientist. When the Catholic

church is threatened by the

heads of enlightenment, the

Vatican is in a discomforting

situation and our two

protagonists must do

everything they can to defend

the church from an imminent

disaster.

The strength of this book is

the incredible and intriguing

history that makes it a page-

turner. It is a gripping story

that will make you want to

continue to the last page!

Angels and Demons is a

book by the American writer

Dan Brown, set in different

places around the world,

especially Paris. Highly

popular amongst readers, the

book rights were sold to

Hollywood and there is now a

published in 2002, it sold out

within a week and the

The Stamford Voice

Human activity has been

damaging nature for many

years, and nowadays we can

see the consequences of our

irresponsibility. Our planet is

seriously endangered, and if

we keep behaving in such a

terrible way, our

children will live in a

dead, deserted world.

In my opinion, the

most dangerous

aspects of human

activity are two.

Firstly, the air

pollution. Cars and

factories are always

producing exhaust fumes; as

a result, the air we breathe

gets more polluted every day,

and this causes serious

damage to us. Fumes also

destroy the ozone layer,

which protects us from

unhealthy rays of sunlight;

without it, our skin could have

serious illnesses such as

cancer.

The second problem is that

men are destroying natural

countryside all around the

world, especially forests. This

is a very serious problem,

because destroying the

countryside means destroying

plants and animals houses.

Without a home, animals die

and become extinct.

I think that if mankind

doesn’t start to realize

what disasters we are

causing, in a few years

our planet will be

uninhabitable and the

world’s population (men,

animals and plants) will

disappear.

Hello Agony Aunt!

I have a problem. Next week

my cousin will graduate

and I have to buy him a

present. He will be an

engineer and he is 27 years

old. What can I buy for

him?

Luisa

Dear Luisa, Thanks for your letter. You can give him anything because the best present you can give is the thought, and this way, you can also save money! Good luck and I hope you make the best choice.

Hi Agony Aunt!

I’m Chiara and I’m 13

years old. I’ve got a big

problem at school: my

French teacher is completely

crazy, she doesn’t explain

anything but she gives us

hard tests to do. During her

hours we play and we sing

but the exams are near and

we can say only “oui” in

French. What can I do?

Dear Agony Aunt,

I don’t know what clothes to

bring on a trip. My school

has organised a school trip

on the snow, skiing. The

problem is that I have no

idea what to pack. I would

bring everything but a

suitcase is too small. I need

help!

Dear Skier, Thank you for your letter. You should buy a suitcase bigger than the one that you have. You have to bring with you heavy clothes because the snow is very cold. This is my only advice for you.

Dear Chiara I my opinion this isn’t a big problem. The problem is your behaviour because during the lessons you do what you want and it isn’t correct for the teacher. Instead, you should try to listen to the teacher and, if you don’t understand, you have to ask her to explain again and you should behave like we do with Nerissa (♡). I hope you’ll follow my advice. Good luck!

Dear Agony Aunt,

I have a big problem this

year. Last year I promised

my girlfriend that I would

buy a dinghy for this

summer but I haven’t got

enough money. If I want to

buy a dinghy I will have to

save from now. What

should I do? Dear writer, Thanks for your letter. Why

don’t you rob a bank? It’s a good idea, but if you don’t want to steal, you could find a part-time job, for example, babysitting. Good luck, I hope you find a solution.

Dear Agony Aunt,

Hi, I’m Francesco. I have

Dear Agony Aunt,

I’ve got a big problem. I’m

in love with my friend but

he doesn’t know it. He’s

my best friend, we go out

together every day, but

another of our friends loves

him too. I don’t know how

to behave! When I see him

my heart beats! Help me,

please!

I reckon that you have to tell your best friend what you think about him. If I were you I’d speak with the friend that loves him too. You should say to her that you met your best friend when you were little so you know more about him: his hobbies, his habits, what he likes or dislikes. Maybe you should choose the right moment, for example don’t speak with your friend when he is angry. How about going out at the weekend? In my opinion this is the only thing you can do. I’ll give you some important advice: you mustn’t think only about your feelings! Luisa

Dear Agony Aunt,

I have a problem in my high

school with an impolite

friend. He annoys me

during my lessons and

when I speak he interrupts

me and sometimes he tries

to hit me! I’m desperate to

change this because I hate

Maths and I find it very

difficult. What can I do?

In my opinion you should talk with him to know what the problem is and try to resolve it. If this isn’t successful you should try to change friends! If this continues you should speak with him. I’m sure that with the correct words he will give up annoying you and will become polite and kind. In my opinion he is a disturbed person with strange behaviour or perhaps he had a trauma when he was a child. Maybe he watches too much television and so he is violent because of the cartoons. Good luck! Max

Dear Agony Aunt,

I have a big problem. I want

to go to a party with my

friends in the summer in

Sicily but my parents

don’t want me to go because

they say that I am too

young. I don’t want to

miss it! What should I do?

Please help!

Well, I’m a parent too and I understand your parents. They are scared about what could happen to you so they won’t let you go to the party with your friends. Sicily is an island, you need to travel by ferry to get there. Why don’t you ask your parents to come with you and your friends to Sicily? They don’t have to hold you by your hand. This would be the chance for you to go to this unmissable party and for your parents to have a short holiday in the shining sun of Sicily. I hope you agree with me. Good luck. Serena

Can you imagine a “Space

Shuttle Restaurant” or a “Car

Restaurant?” These

restaurants are very strange

but there’s one which is very

very crazy … The WHALE

RESTAURANT. Do you know

the story of Pinocchio and the

part when he goes inside the

mouth of a whale ? This

restaurant is is based on that

part of the story. The

restaurant is under water, you

can get to it with a boat like a

submarine. And you can get

to your table by boat which

sails on an artificial lake

inside. The reception is inside

the whale’s left eye and the

toilettes are in the right eye,

the fish can see you! Inside

the nose there are the

kitchens and inside the lungs

there is the entrance to the

submarine. The dining room

is downstairs, in the belly.

The whale is made with

stainless steel and hard

plastic. The interior is made

with steel, hard plastic and

rubber. The furnishings are

very luxurious with silver

cutlery. The waitresses aren’t

fish!!! Inside the dining room

there is a big panoramic

window. You can see the fish

and choose your fish meal! It

is true because around the

whale there’s an aquarium

and you can go into it with

experienced divers ! You can

only eat fish but not whale ! I

think the bill isn’t very cheap

infect for example a plate of

chips costs £97 ! Ok the

description is finished now so

try it! REMEMBER If you

don’t like fish don’t go to the

Whale Restaurant because

The Meal on the Eye is the

most revolutionary and the

coolest restaurant in London

today. You can arrive there

by taxi or in a boat, when you

arrive we’ll take you on the

panoramic wheel. In the

cabin there’s a big screen

with an amazing xbox360 and

also a 3D mode.

In the cabin you can relax on

a big, long and soft sofa. The

waiter serves food in the

cabin with a jet pack. The

meal on the eye speciality’s

the Italian pizza cooked by an

Italian chef.

There’s also good fish, meat

and a sushi chef from Tokyo

(Japan). We

also cook the

biggest pizza in

London, if you

eat all of this you

get your photo

put up in the

“EYE HALL OF

FAME”. You can

also try the giant

eyeburger and

the giant ice-

cream here.

Rarely is it easy to find a dramatic film which can change your mood and your view of life. Forrest Gump is one of these kinds of film. A slow-witted man, Forrest Gump, waiting for a bus tells his heart-breaking life story to strangers sitting with him. He recounts his meeting with a young Elvis, joining the army and being sent to Vietnam, as well as his reputation derived from his countless oddities. But every story leads

back to one intertwining theme; his one and only love, Jenny. An amazing plot with a lovely, magnificent and astonishing performance by Tom Hanks (who won a prize with the Academy Awards for Best Actor) which will leave you breathless. After seeing Forrest Gump you cannot help but see it again, and again, and again. Seeing this wonderful film is simply a duty for each of us. And, as Forrest’s

mother says: “Stupid is as stupid does.” By Rocco

Do you remember Marvel heroes in comics? Have you ever thought how they could be in real life? Now is the time to discover it! By the time this film appeared in cinemas, people knew that this was a success. Starting with the cast there is a great star: Robert Downey Junior who performs the eccentric but genial business man Tony Stark, the creator of his hyper-technologic metal suit which allows him to transform into the

super hero Iron Man! Not only the main character but all the cast

have done a good job. The action scenes, like the flight one, are a concentration of incredible special effects, thanks to the computer programming of Paramount studios too. Finally, Iron Man is an amazing film, not really long, full of action and fights, and adapted for all families and ages. An obvious choice for anyone who loves this genre! By Mario

Have you ever seen the most creative, wonderful, attractive and adventurous film in the history of cinema? I’m talking about Ocean’s 13. It had many nominations for the Oscars and Golden Globes and has a star studded cast, composed of the best Hollywood actors who have

been on the red carpet many times recently. In fact, it has been so popular that is was sold out on the first night. Oceans’ 13 is a fantastic film written by Martin Scorcese. It talks about a group of robbers who decide to rob a casino. This film is set in the wonderful and fantastic city of Las Vegas. The cast is composed of the most important and famous Hollywood actors including George Clooney, Andy Garcia, Al Pacino and Julia Roberts. This film is full of special

effects which puts viewers in the actors’ shoes and it has an endearing and exciting plot that will astonish you. The critics have given it shining reviews and I recommend that you see it in a 3D cinema as this is a truly, indescribable experience that allows you to take part in the film. I suggest that you see this film which is considered by many critics to be a masterpiece. It’s an opportunity that you can’t miss. By Rocco

from the front page. It was

translated for us by Rocco from our FCE class.

Lettera dalla

Direttrice della

Stamford School

Ciao a tutti e benvenuti alla

prima edizione di “The Stamford

Voice” (La voce della Stamford)

Speriamo che vi farà piacere

leggere gli articoli che sono stati

prodotti in classe dai nostri

studenti lo scorso anno scolastico.

Sfortunatamente, abbiamo potuto

scegliere solo alcuni tra i numerosi

validi contributi ma speriamo di

includerne di più nelle prossime

edizioni!

Questo sarà il nostro undicesimo

anno a Palmi e quattordicesimo

anno a Rosarno ad insegnare

Inglese a studenti di ogni età che

vengono da oltre 26 paesi vicini!

Sono così orgogliosa di tutti i

nostri studenti; credo che essi

rappresentino il meglio della

Calabria: diligenti, intelligenti,

determinati, divertenti e creativi.

Insieme, non solo ottengono

ottimi risultati agli esami, ma

creano nelle nostre scuole anche

un’atmosfera positiva e dinamica

che rende insegnare e studiare un

vero piacere.

In contemporanea con il centesimo

anniversario di Cambridge English,

la Stamford School è diventata

un Cambridge Computer Test

Centre, il

che vuol

dire che

ora i

nostri

studenti

possono

affrontare i loro esami

internazionali (A2 – C2) al

computer, oltre che con la

tradizionale versione cartacea.

Abbiamo avuto alcuni ottimi

risultati, in particolare 3 ragazzi

dei nostri corsi per adulti A2 e

B1 che si sono distinti con uno

stupefacente 100% nei loro esami

Cambridge! Ben fatto ragazzi!

Ovviamente, andare alla Stamford

non vuol dire solo ottenere

importanti certificati

internazionali! Vuol dire divertirsi

e imparare a comunicare con

successo in un’altra lingua. Lo

scorso anno, i nostri studenti

hanno preso lezioni di cucina,

studiato in Inghilterra, creato

strane invenzioni, dato il

benvenuto ad ospiti inglesi

compresa una Guardia della

Regina, vinto borse di studio per

alcune delle scuole più prestigiose

in Inghilterra e perfino ottenuto

un importante lavoro a Londra!

Ancora non riesco a credere che

siano passati così tanti anni dalla

prima volta che abbiamo aperto le

nostre porte domandandoci

nervosamente se qualcuno fosse

interessato ad imparare l’Inglese

con insegnanti madrelingue! Per

me il tempo è volato grazie al

meraviglioso gruppo di insegnanti

che ho la fortuna di avere a

scuola ma, soprattutto, grazie a

tutti i nostri studenti!

Grazie per il vostro notevole

impegno, ragazzi. Non vedo l’ora

di iniziare questo nuovo anno

scolastico con tutti voi un’altra
