School Governance Councils

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is time for the election of new members to the School Governance Councils at Cohort 2 schools.

Each Cohort 2 School Governance Council (SGC) has one parent/guardian position open for

election. Parents or guardians of students who will be attending a Cohort 2 school during both the

2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years are eligible to run for the parent/guardian position on

the SGC.

School Governance Councils (SGC) play a critical role in the success of the school. The SGC

works with school leadership and the community to help determine the long-term direction of the

school, design innovative solutions to increase academic achievement, and serve as school

ambassadors to the local community. Specifically, SGCs have the following powers:

Approve the school strategic plan and updates

Manage the Request for Flexibility process

Manage Seed Fund requests

Approve the annual budget recommendations and related allocations

Participate in the hiring of the principal, in the case of a vacancy

Provide annual feedback to the Area Superintendent on principal performance

Current SGCs have been an invaluable resource. They have proposed new and creative

approaches to meet the needs of students at their schools and have been instrumental in securing

approximately $8.7 million of Seed Fund money, over the last two years, to support those new

approaches.

If you are interested in running for a position on the SGC, please click on the link below to complete

and submit a Parent/Guardian Candidate Declaration Form by 5:00 pm on April 28, 2015.

School Governance Council Parent/Guardian Candidate Declaration Form

We are very excited about the work and value-add of our SGCs. We hope that you will consider

running for a position and voting in the SGC elections in May. In the meantime, to get more

information about the charter system or SGC elections visit the district charter system website

at http://www.fultonschools.org/en/about/charter.

Georgia Parent Survey

The Georgia Parent Survey is also modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the

survey using their personal computers, smartphones or iPads. For parents that do not have access to the Internet, school administrators

might consider scheduling dates and times to allow parents to complete the Georgia Parent Survey at school. All parents should be

encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used to calculate the School Climate Star Rating.

However, there is no mandatory participation rate for parents. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the

Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not

be posted online. The URL address for the Georgia Parent Survey is posted below.

AVID Applications Deadline is May 1st Please encourage kids to submit their applications by May 1st –

THE FIRST IMPRESSION I WANT TO MAKE

Have you ever asked yourself the kind of first impression you give to others? Are first impresions even important to you? Too a lot of people, first impressions are very, very important. Rather you’re at school, at the mall, spending time with family or making new friends, first impressions reveal a lot about a person. Therefore, it is imperative that others perception of you match the image and character you truly want to display. Here is a little exercise to help you determine your best traits. On the list below, circle four words that describe how you would like to be thought of when you meet another person for the first time. Once you’ve identified your four words, work towards matching your behavior to those words so your perception, how people view you, is really and truly what you want them to see. Have A Great Day. Officer Johnson Officer Johnson is a wonderful asset to the SSCMS family. Not only

does he fulfill his duties as an officer, he also seeks every opportunity

to work with students. He became such a huge part of PBIS that our

discipline data has dropped immensely. Often, he takes the time to

talk with students about their academic success and their plans for

college. We are proud to have him here at SSCMS.

SSCMS Teacher “Shelfies”

Remember this…

Daniel Narvaez, a student

at SSCMS, was

recognized by the

Governor and

Superintendent for

winning a $10,000 college

scholarship!

This is two of their favorite books!

This week in the media center…

Throw Back Thursday

FCS Central Learning Communities has challenged the METI in all of the middle schools to post “shelfies”

within their media center. We will accept the challenge by posting “shelfies” each week until the end of the

school year. You can view our posts in the newsletter or follow us on twitter @SSCMSMETI.

Celebrating Digital Learning Day SSCMS iSpy Scavenger Hunt

iSpy Students were given a list of random items

located around the school.

They were given an iPad and instructed to take pictures of each item they found.

Everyone joined in on the fun, as students searched for items that

required interactions with others.

In the end, they shared pictures. It was a lot of fun!
