The sugar sector is in a sweet spot right now as the sugar prices have reasonably appreciated in the past one year on account of disruptive agro-climatic conditions (El Nino) prevailing in Brazil, India and Thai-land. El Nino led to excessive rains in Brazil and drought in India and Thailand. As per advanced estimates, the Indian sugar output for the year 2016-17 is anticipated to be around 23.26 million tonnes down from 25.1 million tonnes in the year 2015-16. It is high time that the industry focuses on strategies to adopt mod-ern technologies for scientific farm-ing, development of high sucrose content sugarcane varieties, energy saving, automation and value addi-tion through co-generation, bio-fuels etc. to safeguard itself from the cyclical nature of the industry.

In the past one year, a host of new initiatives have been taken

by the council starting with the STAI e-News Letter every quarter, bar coding of delegate badges during the Annual Convention, encouraging participation of in-ternational delegates/exhibitors, online payment of membership subscription, bid to host the 30th ISSCT Congress in India in the year 2019, synergizing with the regional associations, government bodies and various industry or-ganizations representing the sugar sector cause.
