I need to put my heart in a place where it can once again be in awe of the grandeur of God that reaches far beyond the bounds of the most expressive words in the human vocabulary. I need awe of Him to recapture, refocus, and redirect my heart again and again. And I need to remember that the war for the awe of my heart still wages inside me.” Paul David Tripp, Awe, pp. 11-12 "The fear of God in which godliness consists is the fear that which constrains adoration and love. It is the fear which consists in awe, reverence, honor, and worship, and all of these on the highest level of exercise. It is the reflex in our consciousness of the transcendent majesty and holiness of God. It belongs to all created rational beings and does not take its origin from sin. The essence of sin may be said to be negation of God’s fear.” John Murray, Principles of Conduct, pp. 236-237 Also, on p. 233. he says the following: “There is the dread or terror of the Lord and there is the fear of reverential awe. There is the fear that consists in being afraid; it elicits anguish and terror. There is the fear of reverence; it elicits confidence and love. Scripture introduces us to the former one when we read of Adam after the Fall: “And he said, I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked and I hid myself.” (Genesis 3:10) Our moral and spiritual sensitivities are seared if we do not sense the religious catastrophe which this reply of Adam demonstrates. Made for communion with God, he now flees from his presence because he is afraid. And this dread of the presence of God is the reaction of his consciousness to the rupture which his sin had affected. Adam was afraid of God.” John Murray, Principles of Conduct, pp. 233 Regarding awe: 1. We are hard wired for the awe of God. Westminster Larger Question 1 “What is the chief and highest end of man? Man's chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy him forever.” Augustine, Confessions of Augustine, I-1: “You awaken us to delight in your praise; for you made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Glimpses of the life of Christ which produced awe: Mark 4:35-41, Luke 5:5-9. Matthew 17:1ff 2. We are surrounded by “awe signposts” which points to the living God. Psalm 19:1: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” 3. Misplaced awe leads to ultimate dissatisfaction. Daniel 4:28-30: “28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 and the king answered and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” Speaker: Buster Brown Today’s Message: The Awe That Compels Adoration, Love, and Robust Energy Today's Text: Acts 2:42-47 Sermon. “Equipping people to pursue Jesus Christ passionately as they impact the culture” AUGUST 14, 2016 Sermon. eastcooperbaptist.com (continued) Daniel 4:34-35: “33 Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles' feathers, and his nails were like birds' claws.34 At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; 35 all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, "What have you done?” Paul David Tripp, Awe, p. 32: “Awe gone wrong” causes you to feel unable, alone, unprepared, and afraid while awe of God produces courage, hope, and forthright action. This really is the war of wars. Too many of us, no matter what our theological persuasion, live in a functional state of “awe gone wrong”, and so we are timid, anxious, defeated, and struggling to hold onto the shreds of hope we have left. Our problem is not the size or difficulty of the things we face. No, our problem is awe gone wrong and the havoc is wreaks on our daily living. “Awe going wrong” will cause you to fear things you need to defeat…”awe gone wrong will never lead you to anything good.” Awe is good for me. Nehemiah 1:11 Nehemiah 8:10 11 O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Now I was cupbearer to the king. Nehemiah 1:11 Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10 Psalm 36:1, 5-9: Transgression speaks to the wicked deep in his heart, there is no fear of God before his eyes… 5 Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O Lord. 7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. 9 For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. Psalm 19:9: The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. Proverbs 31:30: Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Micah 5:4: And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth. “It’s so easy to get distracted by it all. It’s so easy to forget things. It’s so easy to go through a day without God ever entering your thoughts. It’s so easy to load life onto your shoulders and be more motivated by low-grade anxiety than by divine awe. It’s so easy to have a formal worldview that is shaped by the theology of the Word of God but has little impact on the way you act, react, make decisions, or plan.” Paul David Tripp, Awe, p. 139 (continued >>) [email protected] 843.856.3222 x PRAY (7729) Prayer?
