Staff News Following recent internal interviews I am delighted to report that Mrs Lucy Smith has
taken over as Teaching Assistant Supervisor at Broadwood
Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Heard on the birth of their beautiful new daughter Elodie
Grace Elodie weighed in at 7lb 11oz on Monday 17 March Mum and baby are doing well and
looking forward to being home with Dad and brother Max
Ivernrsquos Little Helpers did a brilliant job organising our special day The Official Opening of our new build at Pound Pill was a very special moment for us all After many years of children being educated in mobile classrooms it is a joy to see all the children ldquounder cover and in one spacerdquo The extension has allowed us to have a new library including the immersive room pupils from both sites enjoy this wonderful technology I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to enable Corsham Primary to achieve its new building ambition
Sally and the team at Higham Consultancy The Aldridge Foundation CMS Bath Oakland Construction All the staff during and after the building works The children for their endless enthusiasm The Trustees and Governors The DfE who funded the majority of the building All the parents and carers who adjusted to the daily changes and alterations with the school routines with smiles and en-couraging words of support
I know we all agree that everyonersquos patience has been worth it It is so rewarding to think that the building will be there for generations to come hellip the old mobiles are now a thing of the past and will soon be forgotten
Mr Hempleman-Adams the famous adventurer honoured us by cutting the ribbon and officially opening the new extension on our special day He spent time visiting classrooms and answering childrenrsquos questions and was genuinely impressed by their amazing art work I particularly enjoyed hearing all about his Arctic adventuresmdashI for one will not be complaining about de-icing my car in the morning ever again
ldquoThe Day we managed the schoolrdquo mdash by Ivernrsquos Little Helpers
Our PartymdashldquoIvernrsquos Little Helpersrdquo were voted in by children at an election last summer and as part of our year in office we ran the school for the day on Thursday 13 March
Our Press Department said ldquoWe organised that everyone would wear colourful bright socks or tights for the day Every single person looked fantastic in the leg departmentrdquo
Activities were devised by our Party for the children to participate in during the day We organised orienteering for all classes and everyone made models of their dream school These were entered into our competition
and the winners were 2P who won 15 minutes extra play time
Orienteering was enjoyed by all the classes with the help and support of our wonderful sports leaders It was foggy and quite hard to find all of the controlsmdashhowever all the letters were found and spelled out the words NEW BUILDING
Lovely
Our press officers took photographs and helped in the main office with all manner of activities We enjoyed watching Mrs Allen clean the carpet and quickly snapped her in action We took pictures of children building their models of
schools and during their orienteering
The Chancellor of the Exchequer worked with the school Finance Officer and counted out all the cake sale moneymdashthere was lots of it - then recorded financial matters on a spreadsheet He ordered some stationery for Mrs Kendallrsquos
class and had it signed off by Mrs Allen
Admin work was carried out by the Press Officers and Hospitality team This even covered making tea for the staff and emptying the dishwasher Staff did try to encourage some of these activities be practised more at home
After school and during our Grand Opening our entire cabinet were on hand to give tours answer queries and generally be an enormous help to the staff
The day was truly fantastic and hugely enjoyed by us allmdashit was a very special day

Some of the questions for Mr Hempleman-Adams ndash made up by and asked by Ivernrsquos Little Helpers How did you land your balloon I didnrsquot actually land I just flew over I had just two instruments to help me A GPS told me I was getting close and then I had a tracking system as backup which kept sending a signal to the satellite which told base HQ where I was
Why did you go to the North Pole and South Pole unsupported I have a proper job and do adventures in my spare time It all started when I was 13 and did the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme My first lsquoadventurersquo was to the Brecon Beaconsmdashit was there I fell in love with the mountains I learned quickly that it was hard work and the scariest thing Irsquod ever done as it was the first time Irsquod gone away from home slept in a tent without changing into pyjamas cooked for myself etc I have learned over the years that in a team everyone lsquodoes their bitrsquo but on your own everything is down to you I wanted to do adventures by myself
Have you met the queen Yes shersquos very nice I have also met the Duke of Edinburgh a couple of times so I am very lucky
Have you ever had frostbite or any injuries on your expeditions Yes I have had many I have had broken bones frostbite on my nose and big toe and even had to have a tracheotomy (A tube in my neck to help me breathe) I am lucky I still have all my fingers and toes
How do you keep yourself entertained when you are alone for long periods on your expeditions I never take a book or iPod When I was skiing to the South Pole alone I covered 700 miles in 60 days I am there to see the scenery so I concentrate on that and besides there isnrsquot much time to read When I go with a team we all meet up at night as therersquos not much time to talk in the day I set them the task each day of thinking of their three favourite films books or albums etc so that we then can discuss their choices at night This keeps their mind focussed in hard conditions
Are you friends with Bear Grylls I have known Bear Grylls a long time He was with me in a balloon where we had dinner really high up in the air He ate all the food and jumped off I didnrsquot get any as I had to land the balloon and there was nothing left for me Hersquos a good friend

Procedure for Children Uncollected After School Hours
We would like to remind all parents about the Wiltshire procedure for children uncollected after school hours This procedure has been drawn up in collaboration with the Joint Consultative Committee the Wiltshire Association of Secondary Headteachers Primary Headteachers Forum Wiltshire Education Welfare Service and colleagues in the Children and Families Division of Social Services
School should make every effort to contact the parentscarer or emergency contact for that child The school will need to assess and record the situation from the child or young personrsquos perspective The school will need to demonstrate that they have contacted or tried to contact any relevant agency already involved with the child or young person in relation to exploring avenues and alternative carers If one hour after the end of school and at the latest by 445pm the pupil is still at school and the assessment of the situation draws a blank the school must contact their local Children amp Families Team (Social Services) The Children and Families team will then take a decision on how best to
proceed
We have noticed an increasing number of children being left on the playground as early as 810am in the morning Can I remind parents and carers that school does not open until 840am there are no staff on the playground which means children are at risk of endangering themselves and others Recently we have handled a number of incidents with children who are unsupervised and have become involved in arguments which would not have occurred if they had come to school at the correct time
Smoking Reminder at both sites
As you know Corsham Primary School buildings are smoke-free zones This
is a reminder that since the Smoke Free Legislation 2007 we are required
to expand the smoke-free zone to include the playground and field areas as
well as any school grounds including car parks If you choose to smoke
outside the school perimeter please may we ask that you exercise
consideration to those parents and children walking into and out of the
school We are sure you will all want to comply with this legislation as it is
intended to support everyonersquos health and safety Thank you
SCHOOL LUNCHES
Please may we remind you that your childrsquos lunches must be paid for
in advance so that your ParentPay account is in credit at point of order We
cannot provide food that has not been paid for If your child orders a school
lunch and there is no money on their account we will telephone parentscarers
and ask for a packed lunch to be brought in

WORLD BOOK DAY
On Thursday 6 March we celebrated World Book Day in style once again
Everyone looked quite different from normal We saw modern characters such as
Steve from a Minecraft Handbook play football with Mr Stink we overheard
Princess Smartypants talking to Mrs Twit about the roast dinner and we also saw
Mrs Cooke behaving like a Gangsta and Mr Welch being a Wally
This enrichment day is always so successful in raising the profile of the pleasure we
gain from reading because absolutely everyone in our school community plays a part
I would like to thank all the children parents and staff for a most memorable day
especially for allowing me to say Off with your Head throughout
Of course reading isnrsquot just for World Book Day - we know you love to read all year

Even though we were unlucky not to score as many goals as Heywood in

Of course reading isnrsquot just for World Book Day - we know you love to read all year
round Please donrsquot forget to use our Bring a BookTake a Book boxes to update
your own home libraries with a variety of different books Also remember to get
your Corsham Library Loyalty Cards stamped every time you visit to help your class
be in with a chance of winning the Roald Dahl Chocolate Party in the Summer term
The more that you read the more things you will know The more you learn the more places
youll go mdash Dr SeussmdashHappy ReadingmdashMrs Parker
