Kehilat haKadosh, January, 2014 1

From the editor

Happy New Year! Have you made your resolutions? Making resolutions is easy. Keeping them is the hard part. What does it take to keep a resolution? It takes resolve. And, no group in history has shown resolve like the Jewish people. We’ve outlived empires. We faced down genocide and won. And, two thousand years after being kicked out of our homeland, we returned and turned a desert into a thriving cultural and economic powerhouse.

What is it about the Jewish people that fuels this resolve? What do our sages tell us? How do our traditions help us? This month’s kehilat haKodesh looks at the issue of Jewish resolve. Perhaps we can apply a few ancient lessons to drop those ten pounds, save for our kid’s college, or go after that opportunity we’ve always sought.

From The Desk Of The Rabbi

Our Editor writes that following through on New Year’s resolutions takes resolve. Surely to be Jewish is to be part of a people that has demonstrated resolve throughout the ages. One explanation of our survival rests on our fierce

determination to hold on to our faith, no matter what challenges to that faith we may face. A story illustrating this has come down to us from the time of the expulsion from Spain in 1492. A boat leaving Spain filled with Jews had been struck by the plague. The captain threw the passengers off at an uninhabited place. Most of the passengers died of starvation and illness. One man tried to walk to find a settlement with his wife and two sons. The wife became ill and died along the way. The man carried his two sons until he fainted from hunger. Coming to, he found his two sons dead. Shattered, the man rose and exclaimed, “G-d in heaven, You have done a great deal to make me lose my faith, but know that in spite of Your efforts, a Jew I am and a Jew I shall remain, and all that You have brought and will bring upon me will not avail You.” He then buried his sons and walked to find a settlement.

There is, in this story, an important truth. Whether it is the expulsion of the Jewish people from Spain in 1492, the murder of the Jewish people in Europe in 1942, or the attempt to spiritually exterminate the Jewish people of the Soviet Union from 1917 to 1992, (see my sermon of January 3) we have, as a people, demonstrated a resolve to remain firm in our faith, to walk bravely into the future. May we draw on that spiritual resolve as we face our own personal challenges in the coming year.

Thank you

We sincerely appreciate all the expressions of support and encouragement from our Congregation on the passing of our mother, Donatile Aponte Laureano.

Domestic abuse doesn’t just impact adults

“Its okay, the children aren’t effected”

But what if you knew they were?

Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen.

According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low self-esteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety.

What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

A note from our cantor

Jewish Resolve And Resources For Change (if you want to)

MY TOP 10 LIST (from the Siddur/prayerbook)

1. P’sukei d’zimra=Songs of Praise (opening daily prayers) MAKE YOUR GRATITUDE LIST

2. Birkot HaShakhar=Morning Blessings COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS (I woke up; I’m free; I can walk…)

3. Sh’ma=Experience Oneness I’M NOT ALONE

4. Amida=Standing Prayer PAY ATTENTION (the Divine is listening to you!)

5. Oseh Shalom=Pray for Peace YOU ARE NEEDED

6. Torah Blessings=Study YOU ARE CHOSEN. (Figure out for what)

7. Parashat HaShavua=Weekly Torah portion FIND YOUR PORTION. WHAT SPEAKS TO YOU?

8. Torah Blessings=Receipt for the gift of truth (Torat emet) SHARE YOUR GIFTS

9. Aleinu=Commit to change

CONNECT TO YOUR COMMUNITY 10. Kaddish=Holiness is everywhere

REMEMBER THE PAST, SAVOR THE PRESENT, BUILD A NEW FUTURE

Is this too much? The above list developed AFTER the following experience. I needed to change. I felt powerless. I was hopeless. I was offered a solution. In the morning I was told to say, “please help me.” To whom am I asking? What if I don’t believe I’ll get an answer? Apparently, the answer wasn’t important. I needed to practice asking. There will be resources available to us, beyond the limits of our personal consciousness, if we ask for help. At night I was told to say, “thank you.” To whom am I thanking? What if I don’t believe that anybody cares? Apparently, the answer wasn’t important. I needed to practice gratitude. Start small. This one simple act of awareness can begin to shine positive alternatives to daily events. This bookend prayer, “please help me”, and “thank you” slowly brought the meaning of Jewish prayer to life for me. The words I knew from childhood had new meaning. They stood up ‘and saluted me’ with vitality and depth. I hope that you too will discover that help is there for the asking. Blessings are revealed to us if we can see them. Positive change happens through daily practice. Happy secular new year. It’s another chance to begin again. Shalom uvracha, Peace & Blessings, Cantor Hasha Musha Perman

WITH MANY THANKS (from Dorothy Battle)

In 1988 I was a co-leader of a Cub Scout pack with a friend of mine, Roberta Frye, who many of you old-timers may remember. We lived within blocks of one another and our sons went to the same school together and both our boys and Roberta and I became good friends. I was dabbling in real estate at the time but found that the odd hours were not suitable for where I wanted to be. I confessed to Roberta that I was looking for something more convenient, part time, with regular hours and she mentioned that her synagogue was looking for a replacement for their secretary who was moving out of state. She suggested it might be something I wanted to look into. So I sent in a resume and got a call shortly thereafter from Rabbi Michael Remson. I interviewed and was offered the job, and that was 25 years ago in the blink of an eye.

When I started working for CBS they were located in the converted church at the end of Main Street in a residential area. High Holiday Services were held at the Holiday Inn in Naperville which was referred to as the “High Holiday Inn”. CBS held religious school classes downstairs and depending on the size of the class we could change the size of the classrooms with the portable particians. There was a room for the preschool also downstairs and a small kitchen and gathering area. Upstairs was the sanctuary, education director’s office, a library, and the rabbi’s office with an area outside the rabbi’s office where I sat. Being in a residential area had its benefits. There was an elderly couple who lived next door to the synagogue and the wife would often bring over homemade preserves as a gift for us. The husband had a pig he kept in a pen outside his house. He had bought the pig as a pet and been told it was a Vietnamese pot belly pig but as it grew he realized he had been duped and it was a farm pig which grew to about 300 pounds. When the children would go outside to the playground from the preschool, they would always go over to the pen to see the pig. The neighbor often said that if his pig ever went missing, he knew he could say most assuredly that it was not someone from the synagogue who took it. As the congregation

grew, we knew that a new building was in its future. We had outgrown the small building on Main Street and as the saying goes “with growth comes growing pains”. And so fundraising began and in 1998 we moved into the present building.

There have been so many aspects of this job that have been a blessing. My history has been with 4 rabbis, 3 education directors and 3 preschool directors. I have been lucky to have worked with and continue to work with some great people, some of whom have become close and longtime friends. Having staff like we do who work together through those stressful times sets a tone for how one feels about coming to work each day.

I reflect also on all the families who had just moved into town or were just looking to reconnect with their Judaism or were switching synagogues and I was their first source of contact. Many of those same families are still with CBS and now those small children who came into the office with their parents are members who are bringing in their own children to enroll in our Early Learning Center or Religious School. In many cases I actually have witnessed three generations from the same original family unit come through CBS’s doors.

Since my 25th year was announced at High Holy Day services I have been touched by the outpouring of well wishes and congratulations from so many people. Phone calls from people who wanted to congratulate me personally, well-wishers who stopped by to make a point of saying to me in person “thanks for all you have done”, congratulations from our board members and chairs of committees, a leaf that was purchased in my honor for the tree of life (a part of me will be with the synagogue forever), and all this only reinforces why I have been at the synagogue for this long. No, this is not a retirement speech. I plan to be with CBS for years to come. This is an opportunity though to say thank you to all of you for all your support, your appreciation, your kindnesses and your well wishes. It has meant a great deal to me and I am truly honored that you have allowed me to be a part of the CBS community.

Religious School News

State of the School 2013-2014

The 2013-2014 Religious School year began with an enrollment of 184 students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. The Religious School under the leadership of Vice-President Karen Zatz and the

Religious School Committee under the leadership of co-chairs Frances Kraemer and Kim Sharon has continued to take an active role in support and planning of school activities, teacher support, safety measures, teacher orientations, parent orientations and new programming.

The school has continued to offer students in 8th through 10th grade the opportunity to engage in informal learning for the last hour every other Sunday morning. Twice a year they get to choose from among different chugim or interest group. Teachers, the rabbi and volunteer facilitators offer a variety of choices such as text study, parsha of the week, prayer, arts and crafts, Jews in the media, cooking and Hebrew tutoring. Students from different grade levels come together to learn, create and talk together in a less formal learning environment. This year we have made a change from offering pizza lunches in grades 3 through 10. We have asked parents to plan a class activity to bring the students together for a social event. Some classes still need parent volunteers to plan events. Since our community is so spread out geographically, we would love to be able to offer our students a way to connect with their religious school classmates on a social basis.

Religious School does not end after Kiddushin LaTorah (10th grade). Students in 11th and 12th grade can continue their Jewish learning in a discussion based program called Dine and Discuss which has a two year curriculum and meets for 15 sessions on Sunday mornings each year. It’s like breakfast and learn. We have a dedicated group of teens who attend each five week unit, fall, winter and spring.

This year we added a new group, Shevet Achim, The Brotherhood, for boys in grades 7 and 8 to complement our Rosh Hodesh group for girls in grades 9-12. Shevet Achim, under the guidance of Geoff Adler, has been very successful. This group focusses on issues that face boys today. They also talk about the Jewish holidays and even have some fun while they are at it, along with some eating of course! We tried to restart our Rosh Hodesh groups for grades 6-7 and 8-9 but did not get enough girls in either group to make them work so we are back to the drawing board.

Each month in my newsletter article, I specify a Tzedakah of the Month which is then donated to Loaves and Fishes, the local food pantry in Naperville. I check their website each month and choose something they need. We recycle many things at CBS-empty glue sticks, empty printer cartridges, paper and cell phones. Years ago, we began reusing many of our textbooks rather than sending them home so that we could be better stewards of this amazing earth the G’d provided for us. By showing our students how to recycle, we are teaching them that we can make a difference in the world, a little at a time. The school is trying to be greener by sending more and more of our notices and communication via email rather than by US mail whenever possible.

Open lines of communication are very important to me and the religious school committee. We are making every effort to notify you of activities, programs and what is happening in the classroom via email, CBS newsletter, and the CBS Current Events weekly email. Please make sure you provide the office with the email where you want school emails sent and notify us if there is a change in your email so we can make sure you get information in a timely manner. The emails are taken from your member ship forms. At the beginning of the year, students in PreK through 6th grade are given a take-home folder with which to bring home class work so you can see what he/she did each day. We will also put any flyers or special notices in this folder. Please take a minute every week to check the folder

On March 2, the Religious School is going to have a Tzedakah Fair that will involve every class from Kindergarten through 10th grade and their families. Each class will prepare at least one exhibit about a tzedakah organization. Families will walk around and look at all the exhibits. We are asking you to bring a roll of dimes or your personal tzedakah box to distribute in the tzedakah boxes of the organizations that speak to your heart. This will take no more than a half hour and then the students are off to class and parents may stay for Java Nagila. At the end of the morning we will announce how the money is being apportioned.

Our family programs in kindergarten through 6th grade give parents the opportunity to participate and learn with their children during class time. Another benefit is that they also give parents a chance to meet and get to know other parents in their child’s class. In the past, these programs were funded by a grant from the Community Foundation for Jewish Education. That grant is no longer available to us due to a reorganization of the Community Foundation, so we have absorbed these programs into our operating budget.

The committee and I are committed to keeping our students as safe as possible while they are in our care. We are constantly reviewing our safety procedures. I am a member of the CBS security committee which meets on a quarterly basis. Each year the school has a fire drill run by the Naperville Fire Department in the fall, a lockdown drill in the winter and a tornado drill in the spring. We passed the fire drill with flying colors.

We welcome the involvement of parents in our school as volunteers and substitutes. Please talk to me, Karen Zatz, Fran Kraemer or Kim Sharon about how you can get involved.

JUF Right Start Grant

Families who are sending the first child in their family to a Jewish preschool are eligible for the JUF Right Start grant. This grant is not based on need. It provides vouchers toward tuition in the following amounts:

$500 for a child who attends 2 days per week

$1,000 for a child who attends 3 days per week

$1,500 for a child who attends 4 days per week

Please go to the following link for more information on the generous program:

Darshei Shalom (formerly DSP) Greeter Program Needs Volunteers

The title DSP has been recently changed to reflect the warm and welcoming way we greet arrivals at CBS, an approach which also helps keep our building and the people within it as safe and secure as possible. Darshei Shalom translates as Greeters or Communicators, and more literally Seekers of Peace and Wholeness. Each participating individual is a Darshan (as versus the previous DSP designation). Since CBS is the House of Shalom, Darshei Shalom has a very specific tie to our congregation.

Serving as a Darshan means you represent CBS as our greeter...our communicator...and our preacher of peace and wholeness. What a mitzvah, how great an honor! Preparation involves viewing a twelve minute video at your convenience. Please consider volunteering to be a Darshan when you get the call!

In the Wink of an Eye

After 56 years I’ve finally cracked the New Year’s Resolution challenge. Like most people every year I make the same ones because by February I’ve broken them all. Despite this, I do believe setting goals is very important. Where we go wrong is coming up with ones that are unachievable. So this year

I’m going to make some I know I can keep!

1. I resolve to lose 10lbs and find them again by March 1st.

2. I resolve to walk less and less each day so that by January 30th I’m barely walking to the kitchen.

3. I resolve to start a new hobby by spending $500 on materials which I leave in a box, unopened, in my basement.

4. This is the year I’ll start a new business! I’ll order 250 business cards from Vistaprint, give it a facebook page and write one entry of a blog before giving up.

5. I resolve to go to more CBS services. You’ll see me in synagogue on January 4th and January 11th. Unless it’s snowing of course.

6. This is my year for healthy eating! I’m going to eat oatmeal for breakfast every day from January 1st onwards until the box runs out.

7. This year I’m going to learn to play a new musical instrument. Or the old one I bought six years ago and haven’t touched since 2011.

11. I resolve to improve my math skills.

8. I resolve to be the perfect wife if Grumpy will resolve to be the perfect husband. Guess that one’s out then.

9. I resolve to give more to others. Charity begins at home right? I really could use some new drapes.

10. I really must try to waste less time on Facebook this year. I resolve to only be on there once a week. For 32 hours. As soon as I’ve posted this list.

Hunger Van

Muslims and Jews joined together to make meals for the homeless when the Hunger Van stopped at Congregation Beth Shalom Sunday. Members of the Islamic Temple of Naperville joined CBS members to make 300 meals which were distributed to several Chicagoland shelters including Hesed House, Aurora.

Hunger Van is a Moslem based organization whose mission is to help the hungry by working together with other faiths.

Rabiya Salim explained: “We work with all faiths to create awareness of the plight of the hungry. When we work with others we are making friends and showing we can co-exist in the community.”

The event was part of the 6th annual Weekend of Twinning sponsored by the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding (FFEU) every fall. This year, there are expected to be more than 130 twinning events involving Muslims and Jews in more than 30 countries. Participating synagogues and mosques and Muslim and Jewish organizations around the world undertake a wide range of activities during the Weekend of Twinning including study sessions to learn about commonalities in the two faith traditions and joint social service efforts, including feeding the hungry and homeless and visiting sick and elderly people.

At CBS volunteers put together packs of salads and sandwiches which were immediately delivered to shelters.

Rabbi Marc Rudolph said: “"This is the second year our congregation has participated in "The Weekend of Twinning". This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance relationships between two faith communities, to do good at the same time, and to have some fun doing it. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the local Muslim community to further communication and cooperation and to contribute to the building of understanding and peace in our world."

Renewal of Spirit

Resolve, determination, intent with muscle behind it. What inspires people to do a hard thing and see it through? What inspired Jews over the millennia to hang onto an identity and practice that almost always meant restrictions at best and pogroms at worst?

In my psychotherapy practice desperation and a fierce urge for survival were maybe the most important energies behind the resolve necessary for deep recovery and change. But I also noticed that before there was resolve, there was something else, something I am not sure how to name. Perhaps, it was faith. But faith in what, exactly?

Torah God exhorts the Israelites (or is it only the prophets) that in the end all will be well. First, God announced an unequivocal covenant, without explanation or even instruction, except to trust. Later, especially in Deuteronomy, there was a promise with conditions, if we but followed the commandments, then all would be well. As a people we have never followed the commandments to anyone's satisfaction, and we often did not do well. And yet, perhaps some place in the inner workings of the Jewish soul, as a people we did not lose faith; and, as yet, we have not vanished.

Faith, to my understanding, is that decision to believe that maintaining my resolve, as an individual and as a member of a tribe, will be a worthwhile endeavor even if it makes no rational sense, even if I do not live to see the fruits of my efforts.

Resolve keeps us on the journey. Faith informs me that the journey is as important, or even more so than the destination.

Library news

JEWISH RESOLVE AND THE CBS LIBRARYby Carol Medor for the CBS Library Committee

The editor raises the issue of Jewish resolve and asks what has fueled that resolve, what the sages have said about the subject, what part tradition has played in this, and how Jewish resolve can manifest itself in our lives.

A great place to start answering these questions is in the Congregation Beth Shalom Library.

To explore what has fueled Jewish resolve, one could look at The Meaning of Jewish History by Jacob Bernard Agus, Jewish—Does It Make a Difference? by Elvira and Mikai Madin, The Anti-Jewish Phenomenon by Rabbi Benzion Allswang, PhD., Against All Odds by William B. Helmreich, or Why the Jews? by Dennis Prager and Joseph Telushkin, .

To learn the wisdom of the sages, one could pick up The Sages Speak by William B. Silverman, Moses—The Prince, The Prophet—His Life, Legend, and Message for our Lives by Rabbi Levi Meier, When a Jew Seeks Wisdom, and Essays on Jewish Life and Thought edited by Joseph L. Blau, Philip Friedman, Arthur Hertzberg, and Isaac Mendelsohn.

To investigate what part tradition has played, consult the Library’s collection for Exploring Jewish Tradition by Rabbi Abraham B. Witty and Rachel J. Witty, Living a Jewish Life by Anita Diamont and Howard Cooper, A Book of Jewish Concepts by Philip Birnbaum, To Be a Jew by Rabbi Hayim Halevy Donin, and Why We Pray What We Pray by Rabbi Dr. Barry Freundel.

To delve into how one can manifest resolve in one’s life, one could select Down to Earth Judaism by Rabbi Arthur Waskow, Jews, Money,

and Social Responsibility by Lawrence Bush and Jeffrey Dekro, Life is a Test by Rebbetzim Esther Jungreis, Raising Jewish Children in a Contemporary World by Rabbi Steven Carr Reuben, Spiritual Resistance—Art from the Concentration Camps 1940-45,or Songs Never Silenced (a CD, found in the Media Section on top of the card catalogue) by Velvel Pasternak.

The Congregation Beth Shalom Library is, itself, an example of the resolve of the Congregation to provide all possible benefits to the membership. It is a terrific resource, whatever topic one wishes to explore. The collection of Reference, Non-fiction, Fictional works, and Media selections is extensive and many items can be found nowhere else in this area. Find the resolve to examine and enhance one’s connection to Judaism; stop in and make full use of this very special asset.

CURRENT NEWS AND UPDATES:

• We now have a 6:30 "catch-up" class for people who have never done Israeli dance and want to learn the basic steps before joining our group. This class is also an opportunity for our regular dancers to catch up on dances they missed. We require that people call or email us the Sunday before the class, if they want us to come at 6:30--so far, people have been using the time.

• Our class had a Chanukah party and a New Years party, and enjoyed the food, singing, prayers, shmoozing, and dancing!

• On January 1st, one of our newest members accompanied us to the Milwaukee Israeli dance group's New Years dance party, at their JCC in Milwaukee. We had a blast, and we were proud of our new student, who joined right in!

• We continue to focus on partner skills and safe dancing, thanks to our partner dance consultant Jeff Subeck. We are proud to be the only Israeli dance group in Illinois that rotates partners so that no one is without a partner.

ParnossahWorksChicago: A New Employment Website for Personalized Job Assistance

Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) announces the launch of ParnossahWorksChicago.org, a new free job search website accessible by Chicago area job seekers and employers. A unique job

posting board, ParnossahWorksChicago.org caters to local jobs at all professional levels, offering a wide range of resumes and open positions to ensure a productive and mutually beneficial search. Unlike any other job posting website, qualified candidates are screened by an experienced, highly trained JVS career counselor.

The website offers an alternative to large, overwhelming job boards, with JVS staff providing confidential services to both candidates and employers to attain a strong match. The job posting board gives individuals access to job opportunities and employment assistance, while offering a venue for employers to find pre-screened candidates to fill their open positions. The site, free to both employees and employers, is made possible by a grant from the Jewish Federation’s J-HELP Initiative. Additional features include: job search tools and strategies, relevant resources, a calendar listing topical workshops and special events and opportunities to sign up for job campaign services.

riginally developed by F E G S Health and Human Services System in New York to serve unemployed and underemployed Jews in their area, ParnossahWorks is operating successfully in Detroit, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Toronto, Minneapolis and Atlanta. “With everyone from senior executives, middle managers, to young

professionals and recent college graduates being affected by the current economic turmoil, this is an opportunity for members of the Jewish community to connect and help one another,” said Rose Dessau, Supervisor, JVS Employment Services.

In addition to ParnossahWorks, JVS provides job campaign assistance through the Jewish Employment Network (JEN) offering networking

opportunities, career counseling and cutting-edge job search strategies for people looking to be competitive in a tough market. JVS career counselors provide support and help keep clients motivated and on track throughout the job search process. Evening roundtables, ongoing groups and targeted workshops along with a client list-serve complement individual sessions with a counselor. The Jewish Employment Network is a partnership of Jewish Vocational Service, the Chicago Board of Rabbis, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago and affiliated congregations.

For more information on ParnossahWorksChicago.org call 312-673-3437 or e-mail

Calling all torah chanters: “The Bible should be read in public, and made understood to its hearers in musical and sweet tones––and those who read the Torah without tune, show disregard for it, and its vital values and laws.” (The Talmud, 1st Century C.E.). Calling all post-Bar or Bat Mitzvah Teens who would like to inspire the younger Bnai Mitzvah students and keep their Torah Trope skills sharp! Calling all Adults who once chanted Torah and have run out of “lein” excuses! Did you know that we chant Torah at every Shabbat morning service? The Torah was meant to be sung, and we sing it! Join our growing “Legion of Leiners.” We will help you brush up your skills, give you plenty of time to prepare, and provide you with a portion to learn and chant that is manageable for you. Remember: You don’t have to be a Maven to do a Mitzvah! Your honor awaits! Contact Bernie Newman at (630) 357-4544 or [email protected]

CBS Collegiate Connection

We would like to stay connected with your student at college, and remind them that we at CBS are still thinking of them. In the past we have sent a few encouraging notes a year, as well as a small gift. Please pass on your student's address at college to Melanie Greenberg at [email protected]. ELC Cubbies: Please Note: The cubbies in front of the Early Learning Center (ELC) preschool classroom are for ELC use ONLY! Please do not place anything in these cubbies. All materials that you wish to distribute such as flyers for upcoming events, etc., must be pre-approved by ELC Director Barb Bernstein. Barb can be contacted at 630.961.1818 or at [email protected]. Any materials found in the cubbies that have not been approved will be removed and immediately discarded. Thank you for your cooperation.

Junior Congregation: If you are looking for an easy and fun way to celebrate Shabbat and learn Shabbat morning prayers, then come and check out Junior Congregation.

This student- led service (with adult supervision) allows children the opportunity to be the gabbi, lead prayers in English or Hebrew, and take a part in “Sedra Scenes” performances - great practice in public speaking and preparation for Bnei Mitzvot. This service is targeted for children who can read English and are beginning to learn Hebrew. Students in first grade and above may attend without an adult, though adults are welcome, space permitting.

Junior Congregation begins at 10:30 a.m. in the youth lounge and lasts approximately one hour, followed by Kiddish. Please pick up your child no later than 12:00 p.m. as the synagogue closes after services. Please let us know if you’d be interested in hosting a Kiddish for this service.

Please contact Eileen Gelblat (630-355-7916 or [email protected]) or Nadene Eisner ([email protected] ) for more information.

Lunchtime study group: Join us for our lively and popular weekly lunchtime adult study group, on Thursdays from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in the youth lounge of the Congregation, led by our Rabbi, Marc Rudolph. The subjects of study are traditional Jewish texts (in English). Our current topic of study is

The Hebrew Prophets: Selections Annotated & Explained, by Rami Shapiro.

We also are referring to the original prophetic texts in the Tanakh as we study the interpretive translations and commentaries in the Rami Shapiro book. Whether you can come regularly or only drop-in occasionally, join us for the energizing discussions and the joy of learning. You don't need to have been present from the beginning of this topic to join-in whenever you can.

Monthly Meditation: The Sages used to meditate an hour before services to prepare themselves for prayer. On the fourth Friday of the month you can do the same at 7:15 pm in the Library, with Jewish Meditation Teacher Yonah Klem. Yonah will give a brief teaching and then we will meditate about 20 minutes. Beginning and experienced meditators are welcome.

CBS Communication Guidelines and Deadlines

Communication is a funny thing. Some people tell us they get too much, while others tell us they don’t get enough. Some people say they “tune out” because the same information is repeated everywhere while others say that they waste their time searching for what they need. To improve our effectiveness, we are focusing each major form of communication from CBS. However, we need your help. It is important that you at least skim the various communications from CBS. That will ensure that you are kept up-to-date on what is happening in and around our community. For your reference, we have included a table summarizing our communication tools and submission deadlines.
