We can all be incredibly proud of this achievement, but the real test is how we are able to use this to improve the care we provide and bring enormous benefits to our patients and staff. Over the next five years, staff from America’s ‘hospital of the decade’ will mentor our clinical and management teams, bringing their tried and tested systems to our hospital and sharing the principles that have made them successful and awarded for their excellent, safe care. VMI was the first health group to apply lean manufacturing principles - reducing waste, lowering costs and improving quality - to directly enhance patient care, safety and efficiency. Their approach centres around the belief that the perfect patient experience is possible and key to accomplishing this is understanding that the staff who do the work know the problems and have the best solutions. People work in the NHS because they want to help. I know you come in every day wanting to do a good job and sometimes this can be difficult, but by working with, and learning from VMI, we will add to the skills we all have and enable frontline and support teams to improve and enhance the care we give. VMI is also renowned for its culture of openness. A culture where people talk about their mistakes, look at the systems in place, find out what went wrong and introduce measures to fix it. We already have a belief in honesty and have strong foundations built on clinical leadership. These, combined with our commitment to partnership working and learning, will help us become a leading healthcare institution and enable us to share our knowledge with other NHS organisations. Embedding a culture of innovation

The theatre team who held a raffle to raise funds for SASH Charity at their recent theatre study day, especially to Maria Boutabba, Raj Moty and

Debbie Mayne who donated prizes and Sheila Marquez who baked cupcakes for the event.

Pam Trangmar, physician associate, explained: “People with dementia often have restless hands and like to have something to keep themselves occupied. When I first started work on the ward, I noticed that a high number of our patients, who are mainly elderly, found their change of environment very distressing. A nursing colleague recommended comfort blankets and I asked my mother, to see whether some of her WI group wanted to help make some. They made some gorgeous ones, and patients are enjoying them greatly.” If you know of any local groups that would be willing to make comfort blankets that would be fantastic. Running for SASH

Congratulations to David Heller, chief pharmacist, who ran the Great London Newham 10k earlier this month. Despite running with an injury, he completed the race in just over an hour and finished in style on the London Olympic Stadium track. So far, David has raised over £436 for SASH Charity, supporting both staff and patients at our Trust.

Elderly patients with dementia or sight impairments on Newdigate ward, can now enjoy beautiful sensory blankets, thanks to the Women’s Institute (WI) of Aylesford & Eccles. Sensory blankets, also known as comfort blankets, provide a wonderful source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation for people with dementia or sight impairments. They are small pieces of fabric with additional items stitched on that have different shapes and textures.

Meet our new staff governors

Our first ever council of governors has now been elected. From a strong field of 84 candidates, 15 people were elected to represent the Trust members in eight geographical areas (see list below) and four were elected to represent staff members: Lesley Copus (non-clinical staff); Sue Carr (nursing and midwifery); Kevin Fairclough (other clinical staff) and Barbara Bray (medical and dental). They will join a further nine nominated partner governors. Alan McCarthy, chairman said: “My congratulations go to all our new governors. Our board of directors is looking forward to working with them and I know the range and wealth of skills and experience they bring to the role will be invaluable.” The council of governors plays an important role, linking our Trust to the communities across east Surrey and West Sussex. It also represents the views of Trust members to the board of directors and oversees the activities of the Trust. The Governors also have key responsibilities including the appointment or removal of the chair and non-executive directors and approving the appointment of the chief executive.

always working tirelessly through all weathers. Ron was quite surprised to learn that he had been chosen and said: “This means so much to me and I just can’t believe that I’ve been given this award.” The team who nominated him were clearly impressed with his work ethic: “There’s cleaning and then there’s real cleaning and we feel that Ron deserves this award and want him to know that his hard work doesn’t go unnoticed,” said Chris Barella, Lynette Thompson, Margaret Taylor, Lesley Spence, Kay Achleitner, Caitriona Tippett and Graham Spence.

Star of the Month Award

Well done to 81 year old Ron Beadle, one of our oldest employees who is our latest Star of the Month. Ron is described as an ambassador for our hospital who takes a real pride in the appearance of the grounds and helps make it a welcoming place for staff and visitors. He was nominated for his dedication in keeping the exterior of the building spotless and for

Playing a key role in the Virginia Mason Institute development project and helping implement ideas from The Ideas to Innovation Factory, are new SASH employees Katy Morris (left) and Allana Hansell (centre), who join our newly formed transformation team led by Sue Jenkins, director of strategy (right). Katy, a pharmacist and former SASH employee, comes from Kings Health Partners where she was responsible for harmonising pharmacy clinical trial services across three organisations. In addition to driving forward service improvements, Katy has a broad clinical background including previous experience as an independent prescriber and has held roles leading education and training programmes. Katy will be joined in September by Allana from Guys and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust, where she worked as a change agent, responsible for delivering service improvement projects.

The Ideas to Innovation Factory is a software package which will be used to capture your ideas to help improve patient care.

As the expert, you are uniquely placed to recognise what works well for patients and your colleagues and are in the best position to say what could be improved or done differently, whether this be a simple step to improve efficiency in one area, or a suggestion that may involve a number of processes or innovations which may affect the whole hospital, or care pathway. Open to all staff, your suggestions and ideas are welcomed. We are also looking for volunteers to help us assess, evaluate and progress any suggestions that are put forward.
