Really settling in well to your community as I meet with lots of students and play catch up on my “Mr Vann‟s Inbox” still a lot to see. Students from Grade 3/4 have been enjoying building a hot wire alarm, and Grade 5/6 have been involved in the Oreo Challenge.

This week I thought the following thoughts and tips may be of some help and encouragement in your family at this time. Extract from PARENTING SA www.parenting.sa.gov.au Many more tips are available on line.

Families that work well Families have changed a great deal in recent years and there are now many different forms of family, as well as different styles of parenting. One thing is certain... whatever the family means to you it is the most important part of children's lives

Make time for talking and listening • Often parents forget that talking with children can be difficult and that they think in different ways from grown-ups. The people you liked were probably those who listened to what you had to say. • Check that you‟re hearing your child correctly by repeating what you have heard but in different words. Show you are interested with brief fill-ins like “Mmm, go on” or “Really!” • „Put down‟ messages, threatening and blaming are likely to make your child feel bad or hopeless. Show affection, encouragement and appreciation • Children and adults feel good when they are encouraged and appreciated. Let your child know what you love and like about him/her. • Show affection, give hugs, be thoughtful and kind. • Accept the differences in each person • Appreciate, encourage and value the differences in each family member, knowing that everyone is special in his own way. I do hope that these tips are helpful, if you wish to see me or make contact please ring the office, I look forward to hearing from you.

Take care and take time to care

Kind regards John (Mr Vann)

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden News

What a fantastic celebration of the Official Opening of our fabulous Kitchen! Special thanks must go out to our School Captains, Adam Alpert and Kasey Harward, for the amazing role they played in welcoming our guests and corporate sponsors to the school and speaking about their experiences in the kitchen. You were awesome! All our visitors were very impressed with Lil‟s beautiful presentation of the harvest table and thoroughly enjoyed the lovely scones, soup and muffins. Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers that gave extra time to help with catering – your efforts were very much appreciated. The reward for me is seeing the twinkle of excitement in our children‟s eyes when they are out gardening or cooking. Make sure you come and see a class in action – the children love it. Thank you to staff and volunteers for all their help in making it such a successful event.

JOHN’S UPDATE:

Since last writing we left London on July 27th on the Queen Mary for New York. The crossing was very smooth but extremely cold, no sun baking. Food was sensational, met some great people and enjoyed some excellent activities on board. Dressing formally for dinner etc was fun but I was glad to be in the shorts and jeans in New York. Arrived in New York on August 3rd at 6.15am and the views were amazing. Very hot and humid the weather was very oppressive but managed to see all the sights including Ground Zero, harbour cruise, the musical Ghost, which was great, a visit to New Jersey, Central Park, and plenty of retail therapy. Left New York on Tuesday 7th August for Washington DC. A really beautiful city and visited all the attractions, Capital Building, Union Station, Washington Monument, Georgetown, etc. weather hot and humid. Left Washington on Aug 10th for San Francisco, a 5 hour flight. Weather really cold for summer! Been on a cable car, eaten at Fisherman's Wharf, visited Union Square and rode across The Golden Gate Bridge on a bike, really great. Going to Yosemite Park and looking forward to that. Leave San Francisco on Thursday for Melbourne and have been away for 81 days. The time has gone very quickly as has my money! See you soon

Well done Zac!

Community Events

What does Kareem Abdul-jabbar, New Zealand and The Aztecs have in common? They were all correct answers to some of the questions at our recent school Trivia Night (none of which I knew, though I appreciate my table group‟s wisdom „carrying‟ me through the night.)

As mentioned in a recent „Gazette‟ it was the best attended such night in memory and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. Whilst having such a good time and catching up with others from our community, the parents and considerable number of staff who supported this event managed to raise over $4000 which was great for the school. What‟s even better for the children of our school was that this week, following some great quote chasing conducted by a couple of our prep mums, the school‟s Finance Committee approved a line marking company to come into the school in the next week or so to repaint all of the lines throughout the school. This includes new chess boards on the concrete for our large chess pieces, Hopscotch squares, upgrading the basketball court, all of the bat tennis courts, snakes and much more. The children will be happy to see this occur with the existing lines having almost disappeared. Thank you to all involved in making this happen for the children, especially to our parents who supported the Trivia Night so generously.

Another community event which was considered a success this week was the official opening of our school kitchen. This opening saw a few special visitors attend a ceremony in the hall with the children and later the „cutting of the cake‟ by John Dousset our School Council President and Kasey and Adam the School Captains. I wish to thank all of the families who attended the afternoon tea and/or soup event later that day. The pumpkin soup was awesome as was the help behind the scenes that day by Lilianna, a number of very kind volunteers and Christine Clark the project‟s coordinator. If you have not yet had a chance to visit this facility, please pop in at any time (please sign in through the school office first) as the children are busily cooking most days.

Finally, our next BIG community event, our school FETE, is occurring in a couple of weeks time Saturday 1st Sept. I am looking forward to this event as I‟m sure the children are also. If I haven‟t had a chance to meet you yet, please come and introduce yourself and say g‟day as I conclude my time at Dorset on this day. Staff will be identifiable on the day with badges and/or lanyard.

This week we have booked a magician to entertain the children during the day for two performances (I believe 1.00pm and 2.00pm shows). There will be rides, stalls, games, goods and so much more. Hopefully this has been on your family calendar for some time. Thank you to the stallholders and event coordinators and to Natalie Mallinson and Justin MacKay, who I notice almost on a daily basis, spending many hours on the preparations.

….and finally other dates for the family calendar, having been addressed earlier this week by School Council include:

Monday 17th September, which will be a curriculum day (no school for students)

Monday 5th November, another school curriculum day (no school for the students)

Please also note that unprecedented strike action is planned for state schools on Wednesday 5th September. This action will see most school close across the state. How our school will be affected will be reported in the coming weeks. Parents who both work should be especially aware of this date. I understand this may make it difficult for some families. Hopefully this earlier notification may be of assistance.

Thumbs Up! To the children in every grade across the school for their behaviour during our two assemblies this week, and in general for their day to day conduct. I often think it must be very hard at the end of each year to elect School Captains, House Captains and other distinguished positions at Dorset; with the caliber of children you have to choose from. (Excellent job Adam and Kasey with your role/s in the past week). To our parents who continue to drive with extreme caution around the school and who park in the „right‟ places at the „right‟ times. This is sending the appropriate message to your child/ren and other children around who rely on grown ups to be excellent role models. Please also note that Council By-Laws Officers will continue to issue infringement notices to motorists who park illegally or drive erratically. To Kursten Tan for his work after hours in setting up our school‟s new website. We are now waiting patiently for our „host‟ company to manage technicalities at their end for the site to become live. This will happen very soon. To Mr J who continues to enjoy his long break overseas (please see elsewhere in the newsletter). John is due to return following our school fete and I‟m sure will have many exciting stories from abroad to share with the children. To the families who have returned the School Perceptions survey, offering your thoughts on Homework, Specialist Programs, Extra Programs, Bullying and a few other areas. We really appreciate the time you have spent in completing this and sending this back. It is still not too late to complete this now and return to school. Results will be collated soon and information fed back through this Gazette. It will also assist with the finalisation of the school‟s new Strategic Plan document. Thank you again! To the McKeown family for your kind donation towards the school‟s fete.

Regards, Steve Shaw Principal
