Empty both bags of papier-mâché powder into a bowl (400 ml per bag, 800 ml papier-mâché in total). Gradually add 600 ml of water. Knead everything well using your hands until the papier-mâché has a smooth, dough-like consistency. The papier-mâché should be dense and not too fluid so that it is good for modelling with later on.

Use a pair of scissors to cut off any excess papier-mâché from around the edge of the mask. Use the bristle brush to paint the front and back of the papier-mâché mask with black acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry.

Tip: Remove a little papier-mâché from the bowl with a mixing spoon. It has the right consistency when the papier-mâché stays on the spoon and does not fall off. Cover the work surface with clingfilm. The flat, oval dish is used for the substructure of the Buddha mask. Place the bowl on the work surface with the base facing upwards. Important: Cover the bowl with clingfilm too so that the dried papier-mâché mask can be removed easily later on. Next, coat the top of the bowl with a thick layer of papier-mâché (put a handful of papier-mâché to one side).

2

Press the papier-mâché beyond the edge of the dish, flatten it and mould to create the top of the head and the ears. For the bridge of the nose, nostrils and eyebrows, add small quantities of papier-mâché and bring into shape using your fingers. Smooth over the joins well. Using a pointed modelling tool, add contours for the mouth, eyes, temple line and curve on the headdress. Then press the small Lumocolor cap into the papier-mâché to add circular patterns to the top of the head above the temple line. Leave the papier-mâché mask to dry a little until it is reasonably stable. Then carefully remove it from the bowl, turn it over and leave to dry thoroughly.

For an antique look, sand off the leaf metal in places using a sanding sponge from the FIMO accessoires grind‘n polish set – e.g. around the edge of the mask and on the elevated parts such as the eyebrows and nose. You can also add a little black acrylic paint to create shadows under the eyebrows and around the nose using the soft paintbrush and go over the grooved lines again in black. Varnish the Buddha mask.

Use the soft paintbrush to apply size for the leaf metal to the front of the mask. Leave the milky size to dry a little until it becomes transparent. Next, cover the mask in leaf metal and use the soft paintbrush to press it on gently and then smooth over it.

Tip: When hung on the wall, the finished FIMOair papier-mâché Buddha mask is a real eye-catcher. Because the mask was moulded over an oval dish, its back is hollow so it is easy hang from a large nail or hook. The FIMOair papier-mâché mask also looks good as a sculpture on a stand and makes a trendy deco item for shelves or sideboards. Use a hot glue gun to stick the stand to the back of the mask at the top and bottom.
