THE NORTHERN PLAINS

A flat and level land is called a plain. The plains of India include

● THE NORTHERN PLAINS

● THE COASTAL PLAINS

THE NORTHERN PLAINS

The northern plains lie towards the south of the Himalayas. They stretch from Punjab

to Assam. Many rivers which originate in the Himalayas flow through the northern

plains. These rivers carry water throughout the year. They also bring with them

broken pieces of rocks, sand and silt. The fine silt deposited by the rivers is called

alluvium. It is fertile and very good for crops.

The area watered by a river and its tributaries is called its basin. Three rivers- Satluj,

Ganga and Brahmaputra – and their tributaries have formed the northern plains.

The Satluj river basin

River Satluj originates in Tibet. Beas is its main tributary. Punjab and Haryana are

part of the Satluj river basin. The Bhakra Dam, built across River Satluj, generates

electricity and provides water for irrigation.

The Ganga river basin

River Ganga originates from the Gangotri glacier in the Himalayas. Yamuna is its

main tributary. The Ganga and its tributaries flow through Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh,

Bihar and West Bengal. In West Bengal, the river splits into two branches. One

branch enters Bangladesh and is called Padma. It joins the Brahmaputra. The other

branch flows through West Bengal and is called Hugli.

The Brahmaputra river basin

River Brahmaputra originates in Tibet, where it is called Tsangpo. It enters India

through Arunachal Pradesh and flows through Assam, before entering Bangladesh.

Class – 4 Science Worksheet -6

REVIEW WORKSHEET: L-2: PLANTS: LIVING AND SURVIVING

In hilly areas, where it is generally cold, trees are

tall and straight. These have needle-like leaves.

The pine, fir and cedar (deodar) are some such

trees. In the plains, plants have lots of branches.

Mango, sheehsam, peepal, banyan and sal are

some such trees. In hot and damp areas, trees

have lots of leaves. But they do not shed their

leaves in winter. They remain evergreen. Some

plants that grow in such places are teak, coconut,

pepper, rubber, tea, coffee, sugarcane, rice and

cotton. In deserts, most plants grow without

leaves. Cactus is one such plant. Desert plants

have spines instead of leaves. Spines prevent the

loss of water. How do these plants make food in

the absence of leaves? The green, fleshy stem of such plants contains chlorophyll and

makes food .It also stores water. In marshy areas, the soil is sticky and clayey. The

plants that grow here are called mangroves. Their roots do not get air as the soil is

covered with water. So, the roots grow out of the soil and water to breathe. Such roots

are called breathing roots.

Aquatic plants are of three types:-floating plants, fixed plants and underwater plants.

Floating plants float because they are either light or small in size. Duckweed, water

lettuce and water hyacinth are some such plants. These plants protect small water

animals from the heat of the sun. Fixed plants are fixed to the bed of the pond. For

example- lotus and water lily. The stem of a lotus is hollow and light which keeps the

leaves and flowers afloat. The leaves are broad and have stomata only on the upper

side. These broad, floating leaves provide a nesting place for some tiny birds.

Underwater plants like hydrilla, tape grass and pondweed remain under water.

Cereal plants like wheat, rice, jowar, bajra and oats provide food for humans and

fodder for animals. Bamboo is used for making things like brooms, baskets, chairs,

mats, curtains, toys and huts. Sugar is obtained from sugarcane plants. Paper was first

made by the people of Egypt from a grass called papyrus. From ‘papyrus’ comes the

word paper. Some plants of grass family are used in preparing medicines. Dried grass

is used as packing material. The roots of the plants of the grass family help to bind the

soil. Some plants which eat animals (insects). They are called insectivorous plants.

Page 14: ST. XAVIER’S SCHOOLS – CHANDIGARH, PANCHKULA, MOHALI, … · 2020-05-29 · Uttar Pradesh Uttar Pradesh is famous for guavas and mangoes. There are many sugar, textile, leather

In Venus flytrap, for example, the leaf is folded into two halves. When an insect sits

on the leaf, the two halves close and the insect is trapped. The pitcher plant and

sundew are other examples of insectivorous plants.
