Urgent Intention - Priestly Vocations: Led by the Spirit for Mission - May he give us priests enamoured of the Gospel, close to all their brothers and sisters, living signs of God’s merciful love. Have you ever been challenged to describe a spiral staircase without using your hands? Quite a test for one’s word power! St Luke was pretty good with words but even he has difficulty when telling us of the day of Pentecost and the experience of the Apostles. We may recall learning that as the Apostles prayed along with Our Lady there was a mighty wind from above and tongues of fire came to rest on their heads ? And we’d be wrong ! …. because that’s not quite how Luke puts it in today’s First Reading. He says, “suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind from heaven” and “something appeared to them that seemed like tongues of fire”. It’s as if he is saying. “That’s the best I can do” … because the Holy Spirit is beyond human power to express. We could never adequately describe the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Blessed Trinity And I dare say that after El Greco had finished this Pentecost painting he’d think, “Well, that’s the best I can do!”. We can’t see the Holy Spirit but we can see Christians (such as yourself) who are sensitive to the Spirit. Like the Apostles they want to spread the news of Christ (whether or not they can find a way to) and they try to spend some time in the stillness of prayer, and people can see the difference it makes to their attitudes. St Paul puts it like this: “What the Spirit brings is … love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-controlTS ST WILFRIDS PARISH NEWSLETTER 4 th June 2017 2017/23 Pentecost Sunday Year A
