From the Pastor’s desk… Beyond the awe and mystery of the miraculous multiplication of the loaves by the Prophet Elisha and the Lord Jesus Christ is the issue of human hunger, food wastage, the distribution and sharing of one’s goods. There is no question, God cares about the hunger of the world; and so should we as well. Perhaps the question that needs to be explored today is, how should we respond to the physical and spiritual hunger around the world? According to the United Nation World Food Programme, one in eight persons on the planet go to bed hungry each night. The situation may be worse in developing countries where 12.9 percent of the population is undernourished and trapped in poverty due to unstable market, war and displacements, the lack of investment in the agricultural sector and the impact of climate change and rain distribution. Though the shortage of food continues to cause unimaginable hunger, leading to malnutrition, generational poverty, diseases and a host of other social issues, the hunger for justice remains perennial in a world scarred by discrimination, violence, war, oppression, unequal distribution of wealth, persecution of minority ethnic and religious groups, imbalance of socio-economic and political power etc. Often, addressing any one of these issues, in whatever context, appears overwhelming. These issues are present in every human community and require our appropriate response, even at a minimal scale. Although we may not be able to overcome all the causes of physical and spiritual hunger, we are all called to respond with truth, compassion and grace. This begins with defining and acknowledging the reality of hunger and its root causes; and the fact that we can make a difference, no matter how little. It begins with the willingness to share our goods with faith, courage and generosity. If the little boy in the gospel reading could surrender his five barley loaves and two fish to feed a multitude, we only need to imagine what Jesus could do with our “five loaves and two fishes” when we are willing to share with others. The miracle begins with the transformation of our hearts, that is, our willingness to recognize the wounds of injustice and hunger in our immediate community; and to do something about it. Thus, the bread belonging to one must become the food for all. The impact would be significant to the extent that we are patient, focused and united in addressing any of the issues of human hunger, food wastage, the distribution and sharing of human goods. Hence, the need for global collaboration and sustained response. Therefore, we are grateful for our local food banks and the efforts of all who work to end hunger and fight for justice. I commend you to the intercessions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, our patron saints Wenceslaus and William. Stay Close to Jesus and your family. God bless you.
