Mission StatementThe primary purpose of St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary is to provide a human, spiritual, academic, and pastoral formation program to prepare candidates for the Roman Catholic priesthood. In response to the large number of Hispanic Catholics in Florida, and throughout the United States, the Seminary formation program is bilingual and multicultural.

The secondary purpose of the seminary is to provide continuing theological education to qualified clergy, religious, and laity of all denominations.

Dear Friends,Happy New Year! I am pleased to begin the new year by sharing a bit of good news. We received word from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) that the Commission on Colleges voted, at their annual meeting in December, to renew our accreditation for another ten years. We had received word from the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) that they had similarly voted to extend accreditation at their meeting at the beginning of the summer. This brings to conclusion a process began nearly two years ago. I am grateful to Msgr. Steven Bosso, our accreditation liason, and our Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students for all their hard work in achiev-ing this important goal.There are three important upcoming events which I would like to bring to your atten-tion. The first is our annual “Friends of the Seminary” event. This year, “Friends” will take place on Friday, February 25th. “Friends” continues to be our major fund raising event. It is our opportunity to express our gratitude and thanks to our bishops and benefactors for their continued support throughout the year.The annual Joe-Paddy event will take place on Tuesday, March 8th. This is the third year for this wonderful evening in celebration of the Feasts of St. Patrick and St. Joseph. It looks to be the biggest and best yet! I hope that you will make plans early to attend.And finally, Diaconate Ordination will take place on Saturday, April 30th. For most of our men, diaconate ordination takes place here in St. Vincent Chapel. It is one of the highlights of the year as we celebrate the conferral of the Sacrament of Holy Orders on men within our program. The celebrant this year is the Most Reverend Victor Galeone, Bishop of St. Augustine and former Chair of our Board of Trustees. Finally, please accept my deepest thanks for the many ways you continue to support the fine work of priestly formation which is taking place here at St. Vincent de Paul Seminary. Annabelle and Denis Coleman, Jr.nnabelle and Denis Coleman are members of St. Ann Parish and natives of New York, NY. They have lived in Palm Beach since 1992, after Denis retired from a successful career on Wall Street. Denis graduated from Georgetown University, and An-nabelle from the Pine Manor College, in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Coleman family includes three grown children, Denis, III, Nicholas and Timothy, and two grandchildren.The Coleman’s enjoy working in their community and contrib-uting to society in order to make the world a better place. Their goals have been infl uenced by family tradition and educational experiences. “We grew up in and attended catholic schools all our lives,” explains Denis. “Our parents and the schools we at-

tended greatly infl uenced our early choices in life. Being chari-table, helping out those in need, and the mission of the organiza-tions we believe in are what we support”, said Annabelle. Ac-tions speak louder than words, as the Colemans have demon-strated throughout their lives. Their resumes reveal clearly that they have given back in time and talent, as well as in monetary support.While the Colemans prefer to

keep a low profi le, their history of involvement and community service is impressive. Denis has served on numerous Boards of Directors which include the Norton Museum, the Society of the Four Arts, the Kathleen McFarland Ross Foundation, the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties,

the Parish Finance Council at St. Ann, and St. Andrews School. He has also chaired the Convent House Board of Directors, sat on the board for Crisis Magazine and was a member of the City of Palm Beach Town Council from 2004 to 2008, acting as its President in 2005. Denis was also a member of Bishop James J. Daly’s Advisory Board in New York. An impressive ac-complishment was Denis’ appointment as US Consul General to Bermuda from 2002 to 2004. Annabelle’s’ community involvement includes many years on the Board for Boys Clubs in New York City, and in Palm Beach. She has been an active member of the Palm Beach Garden Club, and has served as President. Annabelle enjoys playing bridge with friends on a regular basis.How knowledgeable is Denis about the church and his faith? Not only does he hold degrees from Georgetown, but from 1996 to 2000 Denis made time to attend the Pontifi cal John Paul II Institute at The Catho-lic University of America with no less than a Masters of The-ology, graduating Magna Cum Laude.When asked why he and An-nabelle chose to be Honorary Chairs of Friends of the Seminary, Denis said, “I am a great believer in supporting the formation of priests, and want to do whatever I can to help the seminary achieve that goal. So when Archbishop Wenski asked, I said ‘yes.’ ”

About St. Vincent de PaulBorn April 24, 1581, Pouy, now Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, Fr.— died Sept. 27, 1660, Paris; canonized 1737; feast day September 27) French saint, founder of the Congregation of the Mission (Lazarists, or Vincentians) for preaching missions to the peasantry and for educating and training a pastoral clergy.Educated by the Franciscans at Dax, he was ordained in 1600 and graduated from the University of Toulouse in 1604. He was allegedly captured at sea by Barbary pirates but escaped. He spent a year in Rome, then went to Paris, where he remained permanently. He placed himself under the spiritual guidance of the celebrated Cardinal Pierre de Bérulle, who entrusted him with the parish of Clichy, Fr.

After founding the Congregation of the Mission in 1625, Vincent de Paul established in and around Paris the Confraternities of Charity - associations of laywomen who visited, fed, and nursed the sick and poor. The wealth of these women, many of noble family, aided him in establishing the foundling and other hospitals. With St. Louise de Marillac he co-founded the Daughters of Charity (Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul), an association patterned after the Confraternities of Charity.

DEAD SEA SCROLLS COLLOQUIUM“The Dead Sea Scrolls Fact or Fiction” was a huge hit on Thursday, November 11, 2010. Over 175 people attended the faculty collo-quium given by Dr. Emilio G. Chavez, Pro-fessor of Sacred Scripture at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary. The event which was sponsored by Whitehead Law Offices took place in the Caroll Auditorium on campus and was followed by a lovely reception. At-tendees had the opportunity to take part in a raffle to win Joe-Paddy Festival tickets. A second colloquium on the Dead Sea Scrolls by Dr. Chavez was hosted by St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Delray Beach. Very Rev. Canon Thomas Skindeleski, Pastor wel-comed over 275 guests on January 19th. A reception following the presentation was held in the Parish Family Life Center.

CARMEL QUINN DONATES VINTAGE MERCEDES BENZ TO SEMINARYLongtime supporter and former Chair of the Friends of the Seminary, Carmel Quinn, has donated a 1985 Mercedes Benz Class 380- SL to the seminary. The white hard top coupe was a gift to Carmel’s husband, Eugene who passed away in 2002. The car has been prop-erly maintained over its lifetime, and is in very good condition inside and out. This model

has a removable hard top, leather seats, and many other options. Based on the condition of same year and models, the car is estimated to be worth $17,000, plus. Carmel bought four new tires for the sports car before giving it to the seminary. She had rarely driven the car since he passed away and it only has 55,000 miles. The car is up for auction by the seminary, first unveiled at last December’s Donor Brunch. The car will be on display for the 2011 Friends of the Seminary, February 25th and at the 3rd Annual Joe-Paddy Festival on March 8th. Opening bid is $10,000. SVDP WELCOMES NEW VOLUNTEERSCongratulations are in order for a new group of volunteers serving the seminary. Last September, the Board of Trustees approved the membership of the new board level volunteers serving on the Advancement & Development Committee. The committee is charged with advancing the long range strategic plan for the development program. Chief among those duties includes screen-ing and recommending the hiring of a firm to conduct a state-wide planning and feasibility study for the first ever capital campaign to be conducted in celebration of the Seminary’s 50th Anniversary in 2013. Bishop John Ri-card, Diocese of Pensacola/Tallahassee, is Chairman. SERRA CLUB OF BROWARD COUNTY HOSTS “FRIENDS OF THE SEMINARY DINNER”On Thursday, February 17th, Serra Club of Broward County hosted the 2nd “Friends” dinner to support the seminary. With the lead-ership of Serrans Malcolm and Georgette Meikle the dinner was held at the St. Ga-briel Catholic Church Parish Hall in Pom-pano Beach. Fr. José Alfaro, Vice Rector, and several seminarians attended. Last year the event raised over $2,000 to support the priesthood at St. Vincent de Paul Seminary. “Sometimes there is a higher calling to sup-port the Church. Investing in the Priesthood is one way,” said the Meikles.

orn in the Bronx, New York, and educated in catholic schools, Diane learned very early the importance of giving back to the church and community.

In 1988 Diane, her husband and two sons moved to Jupi-ter to escape the cold and to retire to a differ-ent way of life. Diane knew it was necessary to get involved in volunteerism, and what better choice than the Catholic Church she loves so dearly. Diane is current chairperson of the De-velopment Council at SVDP, President Emerita of and Board member for Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Palm Beach, a member of the National Advisory Board for the Catholic Lead-ership Institute, a member of the Finance and Strategic Advisory Board for All Saints Catholic School, a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sep-

ulchre and on the Advisory Board of the Jupiter Medical Dia-betes Education Center. In 2008 Diane received the St. Vin-cent de Paul Award, the highest honor the seminary bestows upon an individual for outstanding volunteerism, service and

benevolence. She was also recently honored by Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Palm Beach at the Bishop’s Reception for outstand-ing service to the community, Catholic Chari-ties and philanthropy.

Daily Mass and communion are impor-tant in her life and she serves as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Patrick Parish in Palm Beach Gardens as well as on its Finance Committee. After her husband’s death in 2001, Diane be-came President of a family owned real estate

corporation on Long Island, New York.

History of Friends of the Seminary “Friends of the Seminary” was originally called Opportunity Din-ner and was conceived in October 1983 by Rector Rev. Felipe Es-tévez. Th e fi rst Opportunity Dinner took place March 27, 1984, at a cost of $125 per person. Th is loosely organized event, changed its name to Friends of the Seminary in 1990, and at times was a sit down dinner or a reception with hor’dourves. In the mid 80’s the Donor Brunch & Mass was created as an off shoot of Friends. Cel-ebrated in early December each year, its purpose remains a “thank you” event for all donors. Friends takes place the evening of the bi-annual Board of Trust-ees meeting, providing an opportunity for the Archbishop and all the Bishops to celebrate with seminary supporters. In 2004, under the direction of Bill Conroy, the seminary’s new Director of Development, (the seminary had no formal development or or-ganized fundraising program until then) $87,880 was raised. Th e event’s chair was Larry Dahman, a member of the newly formed Development Council, in both 2005 and ’06. At times the event included singing and music by seminarians and outdoor seating accommodating over 300 guests. In 2005 a Mardi Gras theme was adopted, and continued until 2008.Th e idea of title sponsors and/or lay honorary chairs was begun in 2008. Mrs. Catherine R. “Sis” Murphy retained that title in 2008, followed by Jacques and “Danger” Vinmont in 2009. A

decision was made in 2008 to seat all attendees indoors, resulting in a reduced number of tickets available due to space limitations.

SEMINARY FACULTY CHANGES TAKE PLACEFr. Steven O’Hala, who served the semi-nary as Vice-Rector nine years and Dean of Students for six years, was called back to the Archdiocese of Miami by Archbishop

Wenski (SVDP class of ’67) to serve as Pas-tor at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Pompano Beach. Fr. O’Hala will remain as a member of the adjunct faculty teaching Moral Theology. Fr. Jose Alfaro, SVDP class of ’03, was then named as Vice-Rector. Fr. Alfaro was already serving as Dean of Students and assumed his new duties after Fr. O’Hala left. Msgr. Andrew Anderson, also of the Archdi-ocese of Miami, has been serving on the ad-junct faculty as a Lecturer in Canon Law for a number of years and has been named to the resident faculty as of December, 2010. The tradition of a commemorative logo, beads, gift bags, program ad sales, complementary promotional items, corporate support, the underwriting of valet parking were started in 2007 and expanded in ‘08. This allowed the cost per dollar raised to remain extremely low. In fact in 2008 the lowest cost ever at 13 cents per dollar, and a record $206,506 was given under event chairman John Herrick. With the leadership of Carmel Quinn, chair of Friends 2009, another new record was set with over $235,470 contributed. Also in 2009,

the Diocese of Pensacola, who led the sem-inary’s successful re-accreditation process for the past two years and as former Rector, was named Dean of Academics. Additional changes affecting current faculty include Dr. Emilio Chavez, leaving for sabbatical in late January, while we welcomed back Dr. Sixto Garcia, returning from his sabbatical in the beginning of the school year. Proud too are we to learn of assignments of Fr. David Ziril-li, Director of Vocations, for the Archdiocese of Miami, and Fr. Richard Vigoa, both in the class of ’08, as the new Secretary to Arch-bishop Wenski.

While Friends today is able to accommodate fewer guests, it is more generously supported locally and state-wide, and represents a significant total of the an-nual fund-raising budget. Since the initial event in 1984, 26 years ago, over $1.5 million has been raised, while the price per ticket has increased only $50.

INGREDIENTS:5 tbsp butter, divided 3 tbsp flour2 cups vegetable stock,

heated3⁄4 cups heavy cream1⁄2 cup Spanish onion,

finely diced1-2 cloves fresh garlic,

minced

2 tbsp sherry1 5.2 oz pack Boursin

cheese1 tsp Kosher salt1⁄4 tsp finely chopped

tarragon1 pinch finely chopped

fresh thyme

PREPARATION:In a heavy saucepan, melt 3 tbsp butter over low heat; stir in flour and cook on low, stirring constantly, until ivory-col-ored, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and cool a minute. Gradually whisk in stock and cream, return to heat & bring slowly to simmer, whisking to prevent lumps. Cook cream sauce (without boiling), stirring often, over medium heat un-til sauce is thick enough to coat a spoon, about 20-30 min. In another saucepot, sauté in remaining butter until translucent. Add garlic & sauté until aromatic. Deglaze pot with sherry. Add cream sauce & bring to simmer. Add Bourisn, season-ings & herbs; whisk to blend.

“How has your first year as a priest been? Is it everything you expected?” I get those questions a lot. After nearly a de-cade of priestly formation it is comforting to know that this life and ministry often fits like a glove. And yet there are many times when I encounter situations that the seminary could never have prepared me for. I am certainly coming to appreciate the wisdom of older priests who would counsel “you only learn how to be a priest when you are one.”

Since my ordination to the priesthood and my arrival at the Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More as the Parochial Vicar and Executive Director for the Catholic Student Union at Florida State University, my days have been filled with the blessings of ministry and the often not-so-subtle reminders from God and parishioners alike, that priestly formation does not end when the seminary gates have closed behind us.

I continue to be amazed at the amazing people the Lord is choosing to build up the Church and the great things they accomplish in His Name. I may be here to strengthen their faith through the ministry of the priesthood, but it remains clear that the Church’s faithful has much to offer Her priests in return.
