TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Perhaps the most familiar traditional symbol that iden-tifies bishops is the crosier that they carry. We see the shepherd's staff and immediately rich images from scripture come to mind, as well as the recollection that the first to respond to Christ's presence in our world were the shepherds. The staff is more than a walking stick; its crooked top is useful in snaring errant sheep but also in keeping the flock united. Bishops carry the curve outward, indicating their ministry to the wider flock, while abbots (and some abbesses, too) carry the crosier with the curve pointing in, indicating that their ministry is to the monastery alone. The crosier was once also carried by the pope, but was phased out centuries ago. You may recall that in pre-"popemobile" days, the pope was often carried around on a portable throne called a sedia gestatoria. Since he didn't do much walking, the need for a crosier was minimal. Pope Paul VI introduced the innovation of a walking staff in the 1960s, and everyone remembers Pope John Paul II's walking staff, not a crook, but a delicately sculptured crucifix. Thus, the pope carries a "pastoral staff" rather than a crosier. Precisely because the pope's ministry is universal, to the whole world, popes will likely leave crosiers in the hands of the bish-ops they commission for care of specific flocks.

A WORD FROM THE DEACON . . .

After his epic saga Roots was published in 1976, Alex Haley said that in his office he had a picture of a turtle sitting on a fencepost. When he looked at it, Haley remembered a les-son taught to him by his

friend John Gaines: “If you see a turtle on top of a fencepost, you know he had some help.” Said Haley, “Anytime I start thinking, ‘Wow, isn’t this marvelous what I’ve done!’ I look at that picture and remember how this turtle -- me -- got up on that post.”

Our readings this weekend speak to us of humility, a term often misunderstood. Jesus wants us to experience life to the fullest, to hear truth that carries freedom as its gift. Humility is not weakness; meekness and gentleness have nothing to do with cowardice. Humility is the fruit of self-awareness; meekness and gentleness the best expressions of strong compassion. We need these qualities if we are to respect each other, we need these qualities if we are to help each other and be helped, we need these qualities if we are serious about changing the world and orienting all life, all of creation towards the Di-vine. None of us goes it alone in life.

When Jesus invites us to: “Come and see” he doesn’t show us how to ‘go it alone’. He talks about loving our neighbor as ourselves and being united in one body. He also asks us to pray together. We need the Church to help us find Christ in ourselves and in each other and to enable us as a community to reach out to others. So if you know someone who might be curious about the Church - or the Christian life - please invite them to come to our parish RCIA Pro-gram that begins Sunday, September 25th, from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the Scullen Room. They will be sure of a warm welcome as they join with others to explore the importance of journeying in faith togeth-er. Please be in touch with Ellen Dies, Father Norm, or me if you would like further information.

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES

“Those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Family life confirms the words of Jesus in today’s gospel. Commitment, intimacy, loyalty, and love are the rewards of humble service and care for one another. Pope

Francis reminds us, “no family drops down from heaven perfectly formed.”

COMBONI MISSIONARIES COLLECTION THANK YOU!

THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the Comboni Missionaries the weekend of August 13th and 14th. A total of $3,395 has been sent to support their efforts in providing food and education. Your generosity will help many people who are served by these missionaries.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL AUXILIARY Dear Parishioners, We are hoping to start building up our food supply in anticipation of helping our 60 plus families for the holidays. Let's do something different September, October, and November. Let's look for buy one/get one sales at the stores. Use one for your family and donate the other to the pantry to share with another family in need. Of course, any food at any time is appreciated and passed on. (We still are offering 20 food bags per week.) Will update later on our church's 'pantry pro-gress'! Thank you for your continued generosity!

HOPE FOR THE HOMELESS

ENVELOPES IN PEWS TODAY!

Many good efforts are helping those who are homeless, such as providing food, clothing, shelter, and employment. Jesus makes it clear that this has to do with our

salvation and is very much needed. In recent times in Akron and across the country people, often young people, are dying from drugs. It is a good time to ask for your help with the Ignatian Spirituality Project, or ISP, which provides the most important factor: the inner spiritual support without which there will be no real transition from poverty. ISP offers the wisdom of the AA principles and the Ignatian Spirituality, which helps people to overcome their addictions by facing the truth and embracing the unconditional love of God who can lead them to freedom. This is what ISP has been doing in Akron at Loyola Retreat House twice a year with 30 men and women. A two-year study on the change in those who attend the retreat shows that after six months 12% of ISP retreatants show increase in conversion and decrease in loneliness; after one year there is further conversion and increase in housing status. For 30 women and men twice a year the cost is $6,300. The ISP office pays this and we make every effort to replenish that amount to enable us to continue retreats in 29 cities in the US. Please consider helping us continue this work, first of all with your prayer and, secondly, with your donation, whether it be $50 or $5. THANK YOU!

CONGO - GASPARD NZITA

As reported in the weekly Good News column in the Akron Beacon Journal: “Gaspard Maphamuka Nzita, who has been build-ing medical facilities and supporting other programs to overcome poverty in his native Congo, reports that he has raised $8,000 so far to establish a community pharmacy in Boma. An additional $12,000 is needed to reach his goal. Donations may be sent to Educate the Congo Project Inc., P.O. Box 116, Munroe Falls, 44262; or visit www.linkcongo.org or www.facebook.com/educatecongo. Nzita’s efforts over the last several years have included collecting and shipping supplies to support medical facilities, and starting a trucking company along with the Rev. Jo-seph Kraker of Akron to help Congolese farmers dis-tribute and get fair market prices for their goods.”

ST. VINCENT de PAUL ALTAR SOCIETY 300 CLUB

HISTORY OF 300 CLUB - Our first drawing was held on April 4, 1973. This Club was established as a way for the Altar Society to help the parish and was started with the approval of Fr. Corrigan. Today we still have some of the first members. With your support of our 300 Club during the past year we donated $3,700 to St.

Vincent de Paul School for Tuition and $2,126 for new chasubles. We provided fresh flowers for the altar each week, hams for funeral luncheons, and also donated to the Community Carnival and many other things. We thank all of our members for your generous support. Your captain will be contacting you in the next few weeks for the new year. The first drawing is August 29. You do not have to be a member of the parish to join. We have many open numbers in the 300 club this year. We need your help to fill them. Please call Marilyn McCafferty at 330-836-3924 for your lucky “Irish” number. Don’t be left out!

We need your voice, your insights, your practical wisdom grounded in real life experience

We want you to participate in a special, one time, parish event:

St. Vincent de Paul Parish Heritage and Hopes Gathering Sunday, September 11, after the 11 a.m. Mass at approximately 12:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the Parish Family Center. Begins with a light lunch and fellowship. Parents please note – Includes free babysitting by our seventh- and eighth-graders with adult supervision. This free event will bring parishioners together to remember and celebrate high points of our parish history through personal storytelling (not dry statistics.) You will be asked to reflect upon any vital and meaningful experiences you have had within parish life – whether you have been here one month or 90+ years. We will individually and together reflect upon and discuss what our specific hopes and wishes are for having an even more vibrant parish. We will prioritize these hopes under various themes we select (the following are simply examples – participants will choose what they believe to be most significant) How we can help families to be guided and strengthened in their family life What we can do to reach and involve more young people How we can foster a welcoming faith that reaches more individuals, who are not a part of

us. How we can enhance a stronger sense of friendship, fun, and community among us How we can make a positive difference in our surrounding area Our facilitator will be Rick Krivanka, the Executive Director of the Jesuit Retreat House in Parma, Ohio. Rick has been involved in facilitating these kinds of parish gatherings for over 30 years. Specific and practical ways will be determined to follow up on this gathering. As your “still fairly new” pastor, I encourage you to attend. Father Norm Douglas
