Pastor's DeskHard to believe that we are already into September! Schools have begun, and many families are getting back into routines again.

We continue to pray for our children, parents and for our educators, that they will trust in God and feel joy and hope as they return to school in whatever situation they may be in right now -- be it distance learning, hybrid or all in person. Let us also continue to have patience with one another as everyone transitions back to school under such unique and challenging circumstances.

Here at St. Victoria, we are also heading back into our regular Fall programming with Faith Formation as well -- albiet in a little bit diff erent way than we are all used to. Faith Formation registration is underway, and I want to invite families to register soon! Our early-bird registration ends on Friday, Sept. 11, and your early registration helps us better plan for the year in training our catechists and setting up our new learning spaces for the year.

In the second reading from Romans 14: 7, Paul lays out what it means to walk as a disciple of Jesus. He says in eff ect, “We don’t live for ourselves. We live for the Lord.”

Prompt: Refl ect on a time this week when it felt like you were living more for yourself than for the Lord. What did you learn?

Today’s Scripture asks some hard questions of us. In Matthew, we hear the parable of the debtor. After being forgiven of a huge debt he goes out and throttles someone who owes him a mere fraction of what he owed his master. The fi rst reading from Sirach comments on this man’s short memory. “How can you refuse mercy to another when you, yourself are seeking pardon for your own sins?”

Next Sunday's Readings Sept. 13 | 24th Sunday

1st Reading | Sirach 27:30-28:72nd Reading | Romans 14:7-9Gospel | Matthew 18:21-35

Prompt: Refl ect on a time when your memory was short and you refused to give to another the mercy that you yourself received from someone else.

The parable of ungrateful debtor reminds us of the “spiritual amnesia” we all have at times. He forgets the mercy shown to him and instead refuses mercy to the one who now is begging for mercy. Spiritual blindness is that thing in ourselves that we’re guilty of but we can’t see.

Prompt: Give an example of a time when spiritual amnesia took over. You were blind to seeing that what is upsetting you is the very thing you did to someone else. What did you learn from this?

Our Faith Formation team has been hard at work, keeping safety as a priority for our youth, families and our volunteers.

If you haven’t had a chance to see my South Campus video message last week, be sure to check it out on our website (www.stvictoria.net). We dive deep into the Faith Formation program and all the adjustments that the team has made.

Now more than ever before, we want our children to know our loving God. It’s hard for them to see God in the midst of this pandemic and other divisions and unrest our world is experiencing right now. As parents and guardians, we are entrusted with the task of guiding our children to God at all times. We at St. Victoria want to accompany you in this task, and through our Faith Formation program, together we can experience God’s love and learn how to be the face and hands of Jesus to those around us. See more details about Faith Formation at www.stvictoria.net/faith-formation-registration.

The theme of Year 2 in the Archdiocesan Synod is “The Church Prepares.” The Year 2 journey begins this fall with two virtual opportunities for prayer and study. The faithful in the Archdiocese are invited to participate in these learning opportunities.

Praying wi Scripture Series (begins Sept. 13)This fi ve-part virtual series on praying with Scripture off ers practical tools for growing in holiness, drawing upon the rich tradition of the Catholic Church. Archbishop Hebda and Bishop Cozzens will teach the fundamentals of praying with Scripture and explain how to use a Prayer Companion resource to enrich your prayer experience. This series begins September 13. Watch at your convenience with family, friends or on your own. For more information, visit https://www.archspm.org/synod/

This retreat explores how to unbind these knots through the intercession of Our Lady, Un-doer of Knots, and open these wounds to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Encountering Jesus’ love and mercy brings healing and hope. This series begins October 18. More details to come.
