Did You Know?

Inspired by the life of Jesus and the communion of Saints, the Catholic Worker (CW) movement was brought to life in 1933 by Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin. Dorothy, a journalist, social activist and convert to

Catholicism had a providential meeting with Peter, a French peasant, Christian philosopher. Together they breathed new life into the message found in the social teachings of the church including a commitment to nonviolence and social justice. The CW movement has grown to hundreds of communities in the USA and abroad.

Julia Occhiogrosso and Rick Chun founded the Las Vegas Catholic Worker in 1986 with support of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker. The Las Vegas Catholic Worker would devote itself to serving the hidden poor of our city as well as supporting a faith-based nonviolent campaign In 1991 Gary Cavalier, a Catholic Worker from San Louis Obispo, came to Las Vegas to support the Las Vegas house. He and Julia were married in 1995. Together with their two sons and the family of CW volunteers they continue to experiment with the grand adventure of living the hope of the Catholic Worker vision.

It is clear to Catholic Workers that, injustice and violence perpetuate the cycle of poverty. It is not enough to feed the poor without challenging the structures that keep people impoverished.

Our St. Viator Community would like to thank and support Julia and Gary/Catholic Worker for their life devotion to this ministry. Go to http://lvcw.org/ to learn more!

Our Lady of Fatima Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima. Our Blessed Mother appeared to Lucia Santos and her two cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, when they were tending their family’s sheep in a series of apparitions from May 13 to October 13 in 1917. She warned humanity to cease offending God. She also gave the children a prophetic secret that foretold the rise of Communist

Russia and the persecution of the Church. She asked the faithful to pray the Rosary every day, and for the pope to consecrate Russia to her Immaculate Heart—a task St. John Paul II carried out in 1984.

During the last vision, October 13, 1917, Mary performed “the Miracle of the Sun.” The crowds at Fatima, and even people ten miles away, saw the sun spin in the sky. This astounding miracle served to confirm everything the children had said. And it is a call for us to live the message of Fatima today—through prayer, penance, and devotion to her Immaculate Heart.

Our Lady also predicted that Francisco and Jacinta would only live a short while after the apparitions were completed. Both children lived lives of prayer and penance after the apparitions, offering themselves for sinners as Mary had asked.

Both children fell victim to the influenza epidemic of 1918 that swept through Europe. In October 1918, Mary again appeared to the sick siblings and promised to take them to heaven soon. On April 3, 1919, Francisco declined hospital treatment for influenza and died the next day, at the age of 11. Jacinta was given hospital treatment in hopes of prolonging her life, but she knew that she would soon join Francisco in heaven. On February 19, 1920, Jacinta asked the hospital chaplain who heard her confession to bring her Holy Communion and administer the last rites, because she was going to die "the next night." But the priest said that her condition was not that serious and that he would return the next day. The next day Jacinta was found dead - she

had died in her sleep at 10 years old. Pope Francis canonized both Francisco and Jacinta during his trip to Fatima on May 13, 2017 during a Mass at the shrine. Francisco and Jacinta are the first child saints who are not martyrs in the history of the church.

Lucas Batista Maeda de Mourao, a ten-year-old Brazilian boy who was miraculously cured through the intercession of Francisco and Jacinta, attended the canonization. Four years ago,

he fell from the window of his grandfather’s home and suffered serious brain damage. As his distraught father picked him up off the sidewalk to take him to the hospital, he invoked the intercession of Our Lady, Francisco, and Jacinta. That same night he and a local community of Carmelite nuns prayed to the two young seers to intercede with God to cure the boy. Some days later, to the amazement of the doctors, the young boy got up and walked home completely cured. In February 2017, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints concluded unanimously that his cure could not be scientifically explained. Francis recognized his cure as the miracle that opened the door to their canonization. The pope embraced and kissed Lucas tenderly when he brought up the offertory gifts.

Lucia outlived her cousins by many years and wrote several memoirs, as Mary had predicted. In 1928 she became a sister of St. Dorothy and in 1946, she transferred to the convent of the Carmelite Sisters of Coimbra, Portugal and took the name Sister Maria Lucia of the Immaculate Heart. Sr. Lucia died in 2005 at the age of 97. The process for her canonization is underway.

Dear St. Viator Catholic Community, On behalf of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada and the many people we serve, thank you St. Viator Catholic Community for the generous donation of $5,641.60 from the Faces of Hunger appeal to our Adoption Services. For 77 years, Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada has been providing caring, compassionate solutions to birth families that have chosen the gift of love to make an adoption plan for their child, along with adoptive families seeking to expand their capacity to nurture. 20 children are placed with loving families each year. As one of the only adoption agencies in Nevada to offer monthly support grounds for the adoption triad: birth parents, adoptive parents, and adoptees receive mental, physical and emotional support through advocacy, education, and case management. We are privileged to assist these families regardless of religion. Fraternally, Deacon Thomas A. Roberts President & Chief Executive Officer Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada

Super Summer Lunch Helpers!

The St. Viator Community Service Committee (SVCSC) invites you to help Catholic Charities feed their clients over the summer. There is a great need for this special assistance since many regularly contributing organizations do not meet during the summer months.

Our goal is to bag a minimum of 150 lunches twice a month during June, July and August.

Lunches will use pop-top cans of Chef Boyardee ravioli instead of sandwiches this

year since the parish center hall is not available

How Can You Help? 1. Volunteer to bag lunches on the first and

third Sunday of the month starting June 3 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel Meeting Room.

2. Donate any of the following for the lunches: pop-top cans of Chef Boyardee ravioli large sized lunch bags small bags of chips granola bars small water bottles juice pouches packs of cookies fruit snacks peanut butter or cheese cracker packs

Bring your items to church or to the food bank - please indicate these are for lunches by writing SVCSC on them. 3. Do both! Volunteer to make lunches AND

donate items.

If you have questions regarding the summer lunch program, contact Bob Schill at [email protected] or call the

School Field Trips Range from California to Washington, D.C.

The older students in our Parish School have equally fun field trips as their younger colleagues (see last week’s bulletin), including three overnight treks . . .

5th graders get two field trips. “Valley of Fire was fun,” said Celeste T. from 5A. “We got to see many things I’ve never seen before, like petroglyphs.” The students also got a chance to hike the scenic area, a

first time-event for Celeste. The other field trip was to a courtroom in the Regional Justice Center. After a briefing from the judge, the students sat in during official court proceedings. Christopher Q. of 5B said “it was fun and we learned a lot – if you do something bad, you may go on trial.”

The highlight of 6th

Grade is Science Camp. This is a five-day, four-night trip to the Pali Institute in the San Bernardino Mountains. The camp combines science and outdoor education courses ranging from developing outdoor skills (learning to build a fire, make shelter, and cooking) to archery and aerodynamics (complete with firing a rocket), and even a CSI course that includes solving a mystery. “Science Camp was the most fun trip I’ll ever have in my life,” said Brandon C. His favorite was the ropes course because “you get to climb trees. I love Spider-Man so I like climbing stuff.”

Being a 7th

Grader at SVS means heading north. Students visit Virginia City, as well as our state capital, Carson City, and Squaw Valley (home of the 1960 Winter Olympics). “It was amazing, super fun,” said Max D. “All your friends are there, you’re having a great time, great food, and just an absolute blast. I learned a lot about the history of Nevada and all the difficult times and how amazing the place is.”

Just before graduation, 8th

Graders at our Parish School visit our nation’s capital and the surrounding area. They hit all the major museums and buildings in Washington, D.C. and meet with national politicians from Nevada. They also have time to tour George Washington’s home in Mt. Vernon and the exhibits in Colonial Wiliamsburg in Virginia. Since press time was before this year’s trip, we turned to Caroline K., Class of 2015, for her memories of this trip: “It was really interesting to see, not only where historic events happened, but also why they happened. I thought it was educational and cool to see all the different museums and exhibits and memorials.”
