In his Letter to the Romans, St. Paul reminds us that through sin death came to reign in our world, but through the gift of justification, in Jesus Christ, grace and life have come to reign in our lives, cf. Rom. 5:17. Does this mean that once baptized into Christ we no longer have to face sin? Hardly. But we face sin with Christ Jesus as we lean upon him for our strength. Yes, Jesus was tempted as we see in Matthew 4: 1-11. And if the evil one does not hesitate to tempt even Jesus Christ, how much more will we be tempted. The temptations are typically for wealth, power or fame, but there are others depending upon our own personal weaknesses. As we see in Genesis 3:1-7, the tempter uses confusion in order to cause doubt as to what is really right and wrong as well as what is for our good and what is not. We must pray for discernment of spirits in order not to fall prey to the wiles of the evil one. The Catechism of the Catholic Church #2847 states: The Holy Spirit makes us discern between trials, which are necessary for the growth of the inner man, and temptation, which leads to sin and death. We must also discern between being tempted and consenting to temptation. Finally, discernment unmasks the lie of temptation, whose object appears to be good, a “delight to the eyes” and desirable, when in reality its fruit is death. God does not want to impose the good, but wants free beings....There is a certain usefulness to temptation. No one but God knows what our soul has received from him, not even we ourselves. But temptation reveals it in order to teach us to know ourselves.... Let us pray that we might use this season of Lent for a good examination of heart and a spiritual spring cleaning in order to better welcome Jesus to live in us and through us this Easter. The devil opposed God s definitive and universal plan of salvation with all his might, as is shown in particular in the gospel of the temptation of esus in the wilderness. n fact, entering this liturgical season of ent means continuously taking hrist s side against sin, facing—both as individuals and as hurch—the spiritual fight against the spirit of evil each time.

St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reveals many remarkable gifts that we as Christians are given in the Church. This letter tells us about the nature of the Church—as a body, as a household, as a

mystery, as a communion, as a bride, and as an army. It reveals how God’s love for us can transform our daily lives—if we allow it.

In this 8-part Bible study, you will:

Discover what it means to be not just a son or daughter of God, but an heir to all he has to give. Learn about the great mystery of how we can love one another as Christ loves the Church.

Find out that you have a place in God’s “plan of sheer goodness." Delve into Sacred Scripture and the Catechism with the guidance of biblical scholar Jeff Cavins.

Participate in small groups discussions and explore how the message of Ephesians applies to everyday life.

from Pope Francis “Jesus’ whole life, his way of dealing with the poor, his action, his integrity, his simple daily acts of generosity, and finally his complete self-giving, is precious and reveals the mystery of his divine life. Whenever we encounter this anew, we become convinced that it is exactly what others need.”

With family or friends:

Read Matthew 4:1-11

Think about temptation as the lure of pushing God aside and making him take second place in your life. What are you tempted to put before God?

When you do things well, do you give thanks to God and give Him the glory?

Do we put first our need to be accepted before accepting other people?

This Sunday s readings help us make sense of our Lenten journey and the practices of fasting and abstinence. In the first reading from Genesis, we have the retelling of the first sin of Adam and Eve, how when they took it upon themselves to try to be independent of God, they were subject to the penalty of wanting to stand on his own separated from God. The Old Testament tells the love story of God s merciful calling us back to himself, again—and again—and again. In today s reading from Matt. 4:1-11, we pick up the story of Jesus after he was baptized in the Jordan by John, how he was tempted in the desert by the devil. What can we learn from today s readings to help us in this season of Lent?

Just as Jesus went out to the desert, we must make time to retreat from the concerns of the world. Lent helps to remind us of this need. Make time daily to think of God.

Temptation is real. Jesus was subject to it too. Lenten abstinence and fasting help us to strengthen our bodies and minds to resist things that are not good for us.

Jesus day retreat in the desert prefigured the lifelong retreat we are called to practice by abstaining from evil deeds and working to live according to God s law.

During these 40 days of Lent, let us make a real attempt to grow closer to God in prayer, abstinence and fasting. You will find when you finish your Lenten pilgrimage how much closer your are to God.
