Our hallelujahs have burst forth, and are now, at this writing, three weeks on this future side of Easter Day 2018. Jesus delivers the meaning of eternal life, and in essence the meaning of life itself, in what is known as the High Priestly Prayer. He says, "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." Little Jason has two goals in life. One is to have fun, and the other is to rest. He does both quite well. So it was no surprise when he was sent out to catch the bus one fall day and there was …a few moments later, a knock on the door. Mom flew to the door, jerked it open, and their stood Jason looking up with his back pack and lunch box dragging the ground. Mom demanded, "What are you doing here?" He bravely said, "I’ve quit school." Mom said, "Quit school?" As she looked at her child in disbelief she tried to think of some motherly wisdom but all that came to mind at the time was "A stitch in time saves nine" and "Starve a cold and feed a fever." They didn’t seem to fit the occasion so she asked, "Why have you quit school?" Without hesitation Jason said, "It’s too long, it’s too hard, and it’s too boring." This time she was equal to the task. She shot back, "You have just described life. Get on the bus!" The day in and day out tediousness and challenges of life can be overwhelming. Sometimes life can be just too long, too hard, and too boring and we can lose our Christian hope and joy and succumb to despair. My dear parish family,

It is difficult to believe, but here we are, still in the midst of the Easter Season (which ends May 20 on Pentecost). Our hallelujahs have burst forth, and are now, at this writing, three weeks on this future side of Easter Day 2018. We hear their distant echoes stirring in our hearts -- crying out with Resurrection Hope -- providing us with the meaning of Life.

Jesus delivers the meaning of eternal life, and in essence the meaning of life itself, in what is known as the High Priestly Prayer. He says, "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."

In essence, Jesus says, "the meaning of life is this: that you have a relationship with God, and me, his Son, Jesus Christ." And that’s the long and short of it! But, Jesus himself understood just how difficult it was going to be, not only for his disciples, but for all of us to come to this very simple realization in life, and so he prays for our protection from the world.

We do need protection from the world because the world can steal life from us. Patsy Clairmont, author of the book, ‘God Uses Cracked Pots,’ tells a story about her youngest son Jason. Little Jason has two goals in life. One is to have fun, and the other is to rest. He does both quite well. So it was no surprise when he was sent out to catch the bus one fall day and there was …a few moments later, a knock on the door. He bravely said, "I’ve quit school." Mom said, "Quit school?" They didn’t seem to fit the occasion so she asked, "Why have you quit school?" Without hesitation Jason said, "It’s too long, it’s too hard, and it’s too boring." This time she was equal to the task. She shot back, "You have just described life. Get on the bus!"

through another man; we try to resolve conflict through violence; or we try to solve material desires by stealing. Jesus understood these trials and temptations and so he prayed, "Holy Father, protect them from the world so they may be one as we are one." Laws and rules protect our society. Parents teach honesty and integrity to their children so they will then grow up to uphold decent norms of behavior. We all need someone to keep us safe. So why should it surprise us that our souls need to be safeguarded from the corruption of the world? Jesus prayed for his disciples that the Father would protect them and keep them from losing their way in the world.

Jesus knew, only if God protected them, would they be able to discover the ultimate meaning of life. We need a safe environment -- and I don’t think this means merely a safe physical and social environment -- but a safe spiritual environment to nurture our commitment to God. That is why we go to church -- His Church! Jesus understood how difficult it was going to be for us to understand the meaning of life. It’s difficult, because there are so many ways to get lost in the world; but, the way is open, because God is here to protect us, to give our souls the security that we need in order to hear his call and follow.

The Vintage Flock is a group of folks, 50 years and better, that meet at the church on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month for a potluck lunch, maybe some games, always a little wine and wonderful fellowship and laughs at 11:30 AM! You're always welcome whether you come occasionally or every time!

Please mark your calendars for our next day trip. It is May 15th. No firm plans have been made so if you'd like to bring trip ideas to our luncheons, please do! The other dates we have in this cycle are July 17th and September 18th.

Please remember all who are shut-in, in the hospital, lonely, ill or in need of God's bright light. A smile, a call, an email, a card or a friendly gesture just might make someone's day!

From the Deacon’s DeskWhy attend church? It is a question that I am increasingly hearing from young people these days. They seem to have missed the point of church attendance and it baffles me. Some think that youth group or a Bible study is enough while others think that worshipping God alone is sufficient…but scripture suggests otherwise.

Going to church is an outward and visible sign of our love and worship for God. It is where we can gather with other believers to publicly bear witness to our faith and trust in God, something that is required of all Christians (Matt. 10:32-33) -- and it is where we can bring Him offerings of praise, thanks, and honor, which are pleasing to Him. The psalmist wrote, "I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You" (Psa. 22:22). People are often motivated toward church attendance for how it will bless themselves; however, we should remember that the primary purpose of the corporate gathering is to worship the Lord and to make Him known to others. Indeed, the Lord is deserving of our time and energy to honor Him with our service of devotion. "You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created" (Rev. 4:11).

"For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them" (Matt. 18:20). When He is in our "midst," with his power and we meet Him in Communion we receive grace. In such a gathering, Christ is able to do things in hearts that he may not at any other time…experiencing His presence changes us forever.

The Bible clearly shows that if we have a right relationship with God, we have fellowship with other believers. “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). We are the body of Christ; we live our lives together as brothers and sisters in Christ, holding one another accountable. Going to church is also a matter of obeying God's Word. "And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins." (Heb. 10:24-26). We attend to encourage one another and lift one another up. Once we understand that God commands us to assemble together our failure to do so is a sin. "Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin" (James 4:17). The fourth commandment of the law that God gave Moses was to set aside the seventh day of the week as a holy day to the Lord. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy" (Ex. 20:8). It is necessary for every generation to teach the next generation what is right, to model it all of their lives, and so it is necessary that we encourage every Christian to understand that attendance in Church is what God expects from each of us. I hope to see you in church on Sunday.

Deacon John

Canterbury Kids & Heavenly Harmonies Sing to the Lord a new song! Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Psalm 96:1

May brings …flowers and Mother’s Day. I love to have the children’s choirs combine to celebrate all the beautiful women in our congregation. However, this always presents something of a challenge because the choirs meet on different days and don’t really like to sing together. Kind of like sibling rivalry. But we all have to learn to get along and work together, you know—“real life”. So, we will sing A Mother’s Love together at the 8:45 and 11:00 services with Madison Gavin joining us on her cello. I know it will be a true blessing. After that performance, the younger choir, Canterbury Kids, will take the summer off, while the older group will continue to prepare to sing with the adult choir on Trinity Sunday during the 8:45 service. I’m so proud of the way these children and youth have chosen to share their talents while serving our Lord. Happy singing Lisa Musick

EvangelismLast month, we read the Gospel story of Doubting Thomas. In the story, Thomas tells the other disciples that he won’t believe that Jesus has risen until he has seen and placed his fingers in the wounds. When he sees Jesus and the wounds he cries out, “My Lord and my God.” Jesus tells him, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believed.” There is a song I like to play on this Sunday called Doubting Thomas written by Chris Thile of Nickel Creek. It tells the story of a person who knows the truth of Christ but is afraid of their own weak faith. They desperately want to trust their beliefs but are afraid of finding that what they believe won’t be true. The recurring theme of the song is the fear of the singer. They acknowledge their weak faith as they sing of the fear of feeling unsafe.

Have you ever felt like that? I know I have. I know what I am called to do. I know the truth I am supposed to share and yet I find myself hiding behind fear. Fear of my own doubts, fear of not knowing what to say, fear of being vulnerable, and yet we are called to be bold in our faith. Christianity is not for the faint of heart. It tells us to step out into the unknown, into that scary unsafe place assured of God’s love for us. As the song says, Jesus may be holding His breath as we go out into the world as His witnesses but our faith will be rewarded. We, like the singer, must accept the promise of God even as we acknowledge that the world can be a dangerous place but knowing that if we step out in the faith of Christ He will reward us with what we need.

Peace,Tracy

Doubting Thomas - Chris Thile

What will be left when I've drawn my last breathBesides the folks I've met and the folks who know meWill I discover a soul saving love orJust the dirt above and below me?

I'm a doubting ThomasI took a promiseI do not feel safeO' me of little faith

Sometimes I pray for a slap in the faceThen I beg to be spared cause I'm a cowardIf there's a master of death I bet he's holding his breathCause I show the blind and tell the deafAbout his power

I'm a doubting ThomasI can't keep my promisesCause I don't know what's safeO' me of little faith

Can I be used to help others find truthWhen I'm scared that I'll find proof that it's a lieCan I be led down a trail dropping bread crumbsTo prove I'm not ready to die

Please give me time to decipher the signsPlease forgive me for time that I've wasted

I'm a doubting ThomasI'll take your promiseThough I know nothing's safeO' me of little faith

I’m a doubting ThomasI’ll take your promiseYou’ve always kept me safeO' me of little faith

MM Marys and Marthas:

Sisters Seeking and Serving Our Savior

Oh mighty God, protector of the helpless and oppressed, we come to you and offer our prayer of sorrow for those victims of human trafficking and slavery. May they find comfort in the shelter of your embrace and strength in the power of your name. We pray an end to this sickness of human trafficking and slavery, we pray for a new day that is touched with the radiant and lasting hope of the sun, free from the oppression and pain that we would afflict on one another. Amen

Mission & OutreachMarys and Marthas Presents: The Gathering

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV)

Kids favorite foods for TEAMLet’s fill the TEAM food basket with items that kids like.

When our children are hungry most of us can go to the kitchen and fix a meal or snack. Many families in our area can’t do that and rely on TEAM to help feed their families. It’s easy to clean out the pantry or buy canned goods to donate, but kids’ favorites don’t often make the list.

Some kids’ favorites that don’t often make it to the TEAM basket

are:

Macaroni and CheesePork and Beans Pancake Mix (all in one) Pancake Syrup Peanut ButterJelly Spaghetti Noodles Spaghetti Sauce Rice Applesauce

In the book of Hebrews Paul encourages us to gather together on a regular basis because God has designed us for community. A great deal goes on when we come together. While having time alone in prayer and Bible study with God is very important, we also need a healthy dose of encouragement. Would you like to get together this summer for fun, fellowship and spiritual growth? Join the ladies of St. Timothy’s on seven Wednesday evenings this summer beginning on June 6th at 6:45 pm in the Parish Hall. We will share a time of prayer, worship, teaching and fun. Each session will last an hour and will feature fun food, a ministry spotlight, a devotional and some other creative presentations. Since everyone’s schedule changes during the summer, each of these gatherings will be a stand-alone presentation and will not require that you have attended previous meetings. We are kicking this off on Wednesday June 6th at 6:45 with an ice cream social. Come have a scoop of ice cream and a serving of encouragement.

Save the Date! 7/27/18 at 6:00 pmThe M&M team invites you to join us for a game night in the Parish Hall on Friday July 27th at 6:00 pm. Bring a sweet or savory snack to share and your favorite box game, cards or dominoes, or just bring yourself!

Would you be interested in learning more about our women’s ministry at St. Timothy’s Anglican church or in our Diocese? Join our M&M Design team meeting on Sunday May 20th at 1 pm in the Blue Cross Room.

For more information please contact Anthea Kotlan – Women’s Ministry Coordinator – 281-732-7390 or [email protected].

The Daughters of Honor will meet Saturday, May 19th at 9:15 a.m. in the Chapel for Holy Eucharist. We will then have brunch and meeting in the Blue Cross Room, with a special speaker. We invite all women of the Parish and visitors to join us as we welcome Dianne Samoff as she shares her personal story and the founding of a new outreach project. The project is “Power of Shoes” and “Society of Women who Love Shoes”, which has as its goal the healing of families of abuse one “sole” at a time. DOH will be collecting new or gently used shoes and handbags that would be appropriate for women to wear for a job interview – to aid families recovering from abusive situations. Please join us to hear Dianne’s powerful personal story. We ask that you sign up at the DOH table in the Narthex, just to help us with a head count for food and seating – no charge, no ticket needed.

Resolve: Prayerfully Seeking Solutions to End Human TraffickingResolve to Pray and Transform the Atmosphere

Her name is Chris and she’s a homeschooling mom who developed a heart for both victims and perpetrators of human trafficking here in the Houston area. She gathered with some other like-minded moms and they prayed together. They prayed those big, audacious prayers and beseeched the Lord to send them to do His work.

“I realized, they aren’t going to come to my church, so I had to go to them,” Chris explained. Chris, along with friends, completed a training course on human trafficking intervention and then began to visit thirteen brothels, sex shops and strip clubs in her local area. Each time before this group goes they pray for God to give them a fresh infilling of His light.

During the following months she began to get to know some of the people who work at these places and develop a relationship with them. One week a young man came out from the back of one establishment and whispered to her, “You guys bring the light of God when you come to this place.” She smiled, and said, “Yes, that is what we have been praying.” “Seriously, you change the atmosphere here, if you get what I mean.” Reflecting later on this story, Chris said, “When we bring Jesus in with us, we don’t even have to say anything because He shifts the atmosphere.”

Chris wants to encourage all of us to ask the Lord to reveal the harvest field He has prepared for us. It might be a school, a bank, a post office or a neighborhood. Chris goes on to say, “He will show you what you have in your hand to reap the harvest for Him.”

So where is God calling you to reap a harvest?

The Resolve team gathers at St. Timothy’s in the chapel on the first Wednesday of every month at 6:45 pm to pray to end human trafficking in our area and around the world. We do this because we believe that prayer effects change.

Becoming a Spiritual Champion

The Names of GodIn April, the STAY 2020 group (sophomores through seniors in high school) continued to grow. The group is teen led and starts with a time of meditation and journaling followed by the teen Alpha course. They have decided to extend the time and end the evening by discussing a difficult topic with adult input. All teens that are sophomores and above should come and try out this new group. A new, exciting event is coming up on June 9th. STAY2020 Presents –Light Up the Dark a Christian Rock concert on our field in the back that will benefit Free the Captives a human trafficking rescue organization and help to raise awareness to the tragic problem that exists here in Houston. Please buy your tickets early for this fun and worthwhile outreach by our new group. To buy tickets online for only $15 for adults, $10 for kids with under 2 free, go to https://www.tickettailor.com/events/sttimothysanglicanchurch . But WAIT!!! For a limited time, enter promo code chrch5 for a $5 discount on the adult tickets. We need to fill up the field. The headliner band K&V from Dallas will play a rock set followed by a Worship set. Our own Joyful Noise praise band will be featured as well along with one more group to be determined.

Wednesday meetings continue for the 7th-9th graders meeting from 6pm to 7:45pm. We are currently studying “Why Jesus” from RightNow Media which will be followed by a Star Wars based study developed by our illustrious Mr. Deacon Reverend Michael Schwandt.

Five of our teens, Wyatt Greenwood, Wade Seiver, Jillian Edwards, Jocelyn Edwards and Katherine Taylor all attended Happening, a spiritual renewal weekend hosted by Christ Our King Anglican in New Braunfels along with myself and Chris Greenwood serving on the staff. It was a glorious, spirit filled time with all of us growing closer to Christ. A special thanks to Katie McKinley, Kyla Bayang, Valerie Shepherd, Ify Ibekwe, Carolyn Krall, Cathy Johnson, Clayton Melanson, Joe Johnson, Debbie Winkler, Danny Winkler and Patsy Kotlan who took our prayer shift from 12am to 2am on Sunday morning along with all others who prayed before and throughout the event. Prayer works. If you get a chance, ask the teens about their experience.

Soul in the City planning and preparations are active with many of you signed up for committees and prayer. Four churches have registered teens - we have 34 from STAY and 25 from the other churches registered so any and all adult help is welcome. A big THANK YOU to all who have volunteered.

For our Ministry groups, we have officially launched our YouTube site. Please view and subscribe to STAY_YTMinistry on YouTube. For Music Ministry, Jorge Cavazos is offering group vocal lessons to all aspiring singers. Please contact me if you or our teens are interested.

STAY manned a fun activity booth at the Family Fun Day on April 21st as well as the Red Sand Project presentation with our Resolve group to raise awareness to human trafficking.

Exciting times at STAY. If your teens are not coming, they’re missing out on a lot.

In Christ,Jim Boggs

We’ve been working on the names of God this year as a challenge. Each week, a new name. This month to help you in that challenge, let’s take a look way back in Exodus, when Moses was first “hired” as the spokesperson for God. Some PR job, huh? In Exodus 3, Moses is concerned about his credibility with the Israelites. How was he going to convince them that God had actually sent him to lead them out of Egypt? What could he say that would make them follow rather than run him out of town? God gives him this answer: “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.

“Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob – has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.”

There’s been a lot of discussion on exactly what I AM WHO I AM precisely means. But we can all agree that the name implies a Being of power and holiness. This God – our God – is absolutely supreme and to be revered above all. There is no other beside Him, and there will be none before or after Him. He has set Himself solidly as the One to whom all mankind will bring all praise and worship – whether in this life or in the life hereafter.

If we understand our faith, we see that our lives are not about us, but about our relationship with the great I AM. We ‘live and move and have our being’ in this I AM, and all of our attention should be drawn to His pleasure and His provision. Think on this name this month, and praise God for the wonderful Being that He is, regardless of our situation in this life.

Becoming a Spiritual ChampionSt. Phillip

May 1The Synoptic Gospels list Philip as one of the apostles. The Gospel of John recounts Philip’s calling as a disciple of Jesus. Philip is described as a disciple from the city of Bethsaida, and the evangelist connects him with Andrew and Peter, who were from the same town. He also was among those surrounding John the Baptist when the latter first pointed out Jesus as the Lamb of God. It was Philip who first introduced Nathanael (sometimes identified with Bartholomew) to Jesus. Some say Philip was among those attending the wedding at Cana.

Of the four Gospels, Philip figures most prominently in the Gospel of John. Jesus is asked by Philip on how to feed the 5,000 people. Later he appears as a link to the Greek community. He advises Andrew that certain Greeks wish to meet Jesus, and together they inform Jesus of this (John 12:21). During the Last Supper, when Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father, he provides Jesus the opportunity to teach his disciples through the “Farewell Discourses” of our Lord about the unity of the Father and the Son.

Philip the Apostle should not be confused with Philip the

Evangelist, who was appointed with Stephen to oversee charitable distributions (Acts 6:5).

How Phillip died is a mystery, some traditions say he died of natural causes, while others said he was crucified upside down as he preached. His preaching is said to have caused the crowd to release Bartholomew from his cross but Phillip insisted that he not be released. Still others say he was martyred by beheading.

St. Phillip shares a feast day with St. James the Less (not Jesus’ brother) because their relics rest in the crypt of Basilica Santi Apostoli, Rome.

It’s the beautiful month of May which means that VBS is right around the corner! Augh! But before we open that door, the Wednesday evening classes, WoRM and QUEST, will finish memorizing the Books of the Bible which completes our five year curriculum rotation plan. This plan was designed to teach the Bible with in-depth studies of Old Testament and New Testament stories that help our kids understand God’s faithfulness, His love, His plan and to ground them firmly in His holy word. Why five years? This was a deliberate choice, so that the children who have been through the whole program are ready to move up into the STAY groups and the younger ones will get the beginning stories they missed because they weren’t old enough to attend. We have studied 41 stories, celebrated 6 related VBS themes, memorized at least 66 different Bible verses, and the 66 books of the Bible. Whew! But the best part is we had fun and we felt God’s presence through it all!!

It’s almost here! VBS is June 11th-15th, from 9:00-12:00. This year we’re going to Babylon to spend time with Daniel and his friends. The kids have already started learning some of the songs in Children’s Chapel and I’ve already got supplies in for the marketplace activities. And even better, Ginger Phillips and Bonnie Boyce have already volunteered. It’s time to mark your calendars and ask God if VBS is a place for you to serve, too. We have been called to serve one another (Gal. 5:13) and, believe it or not, it doesn’t take special skills to do it. Max Lucado pointed out that… servanthood requires no unique skill or seminary degree. Regardless of your strengths, training, or church tenure, you can love the overlooked. Jesus sits in your classroom [or church], wearing the thick glasses, outdated clothing, and a sad face. You’ve seen him. He’s Jesus….When you talk to the lonely student, befriend the weary mom, you love Jesus. He dresses in the garb of the overlooked and ignored. “Whenever you did one of these things to the least of these, you did it to Me.” Matt. 25:40. Are you ready to serve? Yes, it takes time and energy, but believe me it will bless you more than you can imagine. So, look for the volunteer sign-up sheet and come join us in Babylon.

In Christ’s Service, Lisa Musick

Soul in the City Cooking Teams Needed! We always have such a blast getting into the kitchen and cooking for the kids that we thought this year we would share the fun! We’re looking for groups of cooks (and sous chefs!) to help with Soul in the City Dinners this year. Our plan is to have a different group cooking each night – what a wonderful way to show your support for the youth and their efforts! We have Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights available to any group that would like to get together and do this. There will be somewhere around 100 folks to cook for, but we can help you manage the portions (in other words, we’ll do the math – you do the cooking!). Groups may be organized ministries or just a bunch of people who like each other and want to serve. We have menu ideas and tips to help you make this fun and delicious!

If you are interested, please send Deacon Jennifer a note by email (or leave it in her office box) and let her know what night and how many are cooking. She’ll contact you with the rest of the information. It’s that simple! Sign up in the Narthex today!
