Nooks and Crannies I hope this finds you having a most Holy Lenten Season. I must start by quoting one of our young parishioners, who said, “Come with me. I know every nook and cranny of this church. I know where all the fun is.” Now, while we don’t usually associate “fun” with “lent” it is in the spirit of searching and knowing where all the special “nooks and crannies” are that I write to you today. By now you may have spotted or at least heard about our wonderful new worship space – what was once the beloved but worn-down labyrinth is now a beautiful outdoor chapel! Many hands and hearts have been hard at work to prepare this place, from the imaginative design, the art of the cross, the craftsmanship of the wood altar and benches, and the careful planting of every young plant and flower. We have already made plans to use this space for “The Watch,” Easter Vigil, and Children’s Night Time Chapel, but oh, the many other blessings it is sure to hold. I hope you will find this sacred nook a place where we might speak our hearts to God, give a listening ear, or welcome the stranger. Speaking of welcoming, we are hoping to have the opportunity to welcome a new member into the fold through baptism at our upcoming Easter Vigil. Keep in mind, the Easter Vigil is only one part of the Triduum, or Three Days, which refers to the period beginning Maundy Thursday evening and ending Easter Sunday. What is connected so intricately in these three days is the institution of the Lord’s Supper, Christ’s Death on the Cross and the celebration of the Resurrection. It is in fact one single liturgical act, celebrating the drama and mystery of dying and rising again in Christ. I hope you will take the time to participate in the entire three-day service. Lastly, thank you for taking the time to pray and communicate your thoughts about your vision of St. Thomas in the Congregational Survey. There is still plenty of space for you to come and partic-ipate in the planning meeting, to be held March 5th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Collaborative Labs, 13805 58th St N, in Clearwater. A bus is available for those who do not wish to drive. How excit-ing it will be to piece together God’s vision for us. We are so accustomed to timing, schedules, instant gratification, and not allowing the seeds that were just planted yesterday to spring up. These are opportunities to slow down, observe what God is doing in our lives and listen to where God is calling us. It is in the nooks and crannies of the church – quiet worship spaces, in retelling God’s story together, and in careful planning – where we listen to God and one another. In that time we can be reflective, we can make connec-tions to why we do the things we do and who it affects, and then we can get knee-deep in the practice of doing God’s will.

In His love, Janet

4 Musical Notes

Rick at ACDA Southern Division Conference Rick Smith, our director of music will attend the Southern Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association, March 9th-12th in Chattanooga, TN., a time of continuing education and professional enrichment. The Music of Palm/Passion Sunday, March 20th

At 10:00 a.m., our worship begins together in the Garden. The Chancel Choir and guest cellist, Lowell Adams call us to worship with A Gathering Psalm with Renais-sance music of Ludovico Viadana, and the chanted Liturgy of the Palms follows. Then both congregations follow a Crucifer and pealing handbells into their worship spaces, remembering Christ’s procession into Jerusalem. Quickly, the service changes from celebration to solemnity as the full Passion story is read. Music includes the offertory, Prelude on “O Sacred Head Now Wounded” for handbells, flute (Carole Igney) and cel-

lo (Lowell Adams). At Communion, the Chancel Choir will sing, O Dearest Lord, Thy Sacred Head, and an early American tune arranged for choir, organ, flute and cello by David Johnson. Also fea-tured is a special solo by cellist, Lowell Adams. The Music of Maundy Thursday, March 24th Although this service begins as a usual Lenten choral Eucharist, on this day we join with the Disciples of Christ as we remember the experience of the Last Supper. Then, at the end of the liturgy the altar is stripped and we begin the watch, waiting for what is to come. In addition to the hymns, psalms and ser-vice music, the Chancel Choir will present two anthems. The first is Jesus, Sun of Life, My Splendor, music excerpted from a Passion work by G. F. Handel. The second is Jesus, So Lowly, a familiar Holy Week motet by Harold Friedell. The Music of the Great Vigil, March 26th

The Great Vigil is actually the first service of the Easter celebration, even though it is on Holy Saturday after sunset, (7:00 p.m.). It begins with fire and candles in the Service of Light, reminds us of the many great acts of God in the Service of Lessons, brings us to Christ through the Renewal of Baptism Vows, and finally to the resurrection of Christ in a joyful Easter Eucharist. Our music will include many hymns and canticles, a delightful choral anthem called East-

ertide Carol arranged by Richard Proulx, a festive flourish of handbells called Easter Bells written by Michael Ryan and played by the Bells of St. Thomas, and more. Don’t miss it! The Music of Easter Day, 3/27 Music is an important aspect of our worship on Easter Day. For the second year, we will host a festival brass ensemble. Brass and organ begin our preludes, 15 minutes before the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. sanctuary services times. First, I have arranged an Easter motet by the Italian composer, Giovanni Gabrieli for brass quintet and organ. Gabrieli was a revolutionary composer in his day, transitioning from the Renaissance into the Baroque musical era. He was choirmaster at San Marco Basilica in Venice, and his church music was especially known for multi-choir pieces. Next, our organist, Joe Master will play a festive organ work. The final prelude is a new work I have written specially for this Easter Day called “Fanfare for the Resurrection”. During the service, brass, organ, choir and (Continue on page 5)

congregation unite for creative and festive hymns and service music. One such hymn is by K. Lee Scott, “God’s Right Hand and His Holy Arm”. Written in 2000, it is a newer Easter hymn not in-cluded in our hymnal but will be printed in our bulletin. Special music from the choir includes “Thine is the Glory” by Mark Shepperd, a relatively new work for brass and choir from 2008. Also included is a beloved “Anglican chestnut” from the 1930’s titled, “Come, Ye Faithful” by R. S. Thatcher. Originally written for choir and organ only; I have added brass to give the work a fresh face. All in all, it will be a grand morning celebrating the Resurrection. Alleluia! A Fresh Focus For Lent

Speaking to children about the season of Lent is always a treat. You find that there are as many variations on the season as there are children present. Many focus on penance and some focus on the end result being Easter. Others are simply

confused by it, is it sad or is it happy? Lastly, many feel it is hard work. All of this is not much different than the adult view when you think about it.

With the help of the Messy Church curriculum (Love Our World) our focus is on the word CREATION. There are so many twists and turns on this theme that it will easily keep us busy for 6 weeks and beyond. We began with dust and dirt on Ash Wednesday. In thinking about the concept of “coming from dust” we moved on to the self. Who are we and what does God expect of us? From there we moved on to how we fit into our immediate circle using the gifts God gave us. How are we different? Finally we will explore how we are called to reach out in the world and serve. We are our own creation story. The kids are having a blast gazing at stars, then into mirrors at themselves, playing in the dirt and with bugs and plants. All with the goal of understanding how we fit into this crazy world. It’s no longer hard work. It is joyous and fun, fresh and full of life. All brought to you by our savior, Jesus Christ.

Transforming the everyday moment… Last week I made my usual stop for morning prayer

and calendar check. Walsingham Park is always a

beautiful place. On this particular day it transformed

an everyday moment into a “thin” place. It reminded

me that we are given opportunity many times even in

one day to transform the every day. God wants to be

visibly present to us. Kind of a hey, “I’m still here feel-

ing.” All of lent gives us a special opportunity to look,

listen and act. We have only to be open: to say yes.

Then share the yes with another person. Make every-

day count.

Peace.

The Word of the Lord

Several of St. Thomas’ long-time lay readers have retired from service or have moved away from the area, and we are looking for their successors. There is a special need for lectors at the 8 a.m. Sunday worship services. This ministry is open to all parishioners of any age who are able to read well aloud. If you feel called to volunteer for this special ministry, please contact Mary Jane Park, Lector chair, at [email protected] or call (727) 822-2815 . She will guide you in the proper protocol and show you pronunciation guides.
