Our parish has been so generous this year. Please continue that generosity by participating in our annual Thanksgiving Project by sponsoring a turkey or even a thanksgiving meal for a needy family. For a $10 donation, you can pick a turkey from the display in back of church and we will purchase a turkey for a designated family. With a $25 donation, a complete meal will be purchased for a family that wouldn’t otherwise have a traditional thanksgiving dinner! Any donation amount is appreciated so we can provide for these families. Watch for a similar opportunity for our Christmas Project starting Thanks-giving Weekend. It’s not too late to get involved with the committee. Contact Mary at [email protected] or 936-295-6935.

PEACE . . . First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others. — Thomas á Kempis
Stewardship Reflections . . . That the joy and peace we have in our lives may encourage others to grow in their faith. “…Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us.” 2 Thessalonians 3:9 Most people who live a grateful and generous lifestyle don’t go around bragging about it. But through their actions and words, others do take notice. They notice because of the joy and peace that results and other people desire this in their own life. Know that the way you live your life may be the only interaction others have with our Catholic faith.
Reflexiones de Mayordomía . . .

The Fire of Your Love: New Survey
By Will Oliver
Not long ago, the Pew Research Center published a study that found 69% of professed Catholics did not believe in transubstantiation and that the Eucharist was merely a symbol of Jesus Christ. Father talked about this in a homily and I wrote a column on the subject. Another study has just been released, this time by Father Donald Kloster, an active priest from Connecticut who earned a degree at the University of Dallas. The new study compares Catholics who attend the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), with those who attend the Novus Ordo Mass (NOM). The Tridentine Mass, typically called the Traditional Latin Mass was the common Mass prior to the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II), or before 1965. The Novus Ordo Mass (literally “the new order”) is the Mass we celebrate today (and have since 1965). Though there are many Catholic Churches in the United States that provide both forms of the Mass, Churches dedicated solely to the Traditional Latin Mass are growing in number. Still, the Novus Ordo Mass remains the most common form today. In 2018, a survey was given to a random selection of the 489 Catholic Churches found to be offering the Traditional Latin Mass. The surveys were delivered “in pew” or parishioners were encouraged to complete the survey online. There were 1,322 respondents to the in-pew surveys and 451 to the online version for a total of 1,773 respondents. The data was then compared with parishioners who attended the Novus Ordo Mass. In looking at attendance on Sunday, the survey found that 99% of those attending the Traditional Latin Mass reported weekly Mass attendance compared to only 22% of the Novus Ordo Mass respondents. In regard to participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once annually—a precept of the Church—, 98% of the Traditional Latin Mass attendees reported doing so, compared to only 25% of the Novus Ordo Mass attendees. The survey also asked what percentage of their income they donated to Church. The TLM respondents averaged 6%, while the NOM respondents averaged 1.2%. Clearly, there is a wide gulf between the separate Mass attendees with basic Catholic teachings. Turning to issues of morality, Father Kloster asked if they approved of three things the Church does not support: contraception (CCC 2370), abortion (CCC 2270-2275), and gay marriage (CCC 2357-2359). Of the TLM respondents, 2% supported the use of contraception, 1% approved of abortion, and 2% approved of gay marriage. Of the NOM respondents, 89% supported the use of contraception, 51% approved of abortion, and 67% approved of gay marriage. Again, there appears to be an even wider gulf between the two groups in regard to Catholic morality. The results are perhaps not surprising, but it should be noted that the TLM is most likely not the cause of their attendees being more traditional minded. It is more likely the TLM attracts those who are more resolute in their faith or are seeking to be so. It should also be noted that one failing of the study is that the NOM results are not separated out by Mass attendance. As we know from the Pew survey, those who attend the NOM weekly or more are much more likely to believe in all of the tenets of the faith, while those who attend seldom or never do not. Still, even taking this into account, it is not likely that the weekly NOM attendees will come as close to the TLM responses. Some will say that this is a failing of the Vatican II changes, while others will say that modern Catholi-cism has become too world-like. The former, due to its timing, was at least conflated with the social change of the time (1960s). In regard to the latter, remember, John did teach us: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If any one loves the world, love for the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15).
LA VIDA ES DURA, PERO NO TENEMOS MIEDO . . . Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

CHURCH SECURITY INFORMATION
Following the church shootings last year near San Antonio the parish's Security Committee has taken steps ensure the safety of all St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners. The first step restricts access to the church during liturgical services. Once Mass has begun all doors into the church will be locked from the inside with the exception of the double doors facing 16th Street. Anyone arriving late for Mass will only be able to enter the church through the 16th Street doors. Parishioners will be able to exit the church through any of the locked doors as well as the doors fac-ing 16th Street. Signs will be posted around the church building to remind parishioners of the locked doors. The staff at St. Thomas the Apostle Church takes the safety and security of all the parishioners very seriously. We are confident that the steps taken at this time will minimize any problematic incidents.
