CATHOLIC HOME MISSION APPEAL

The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place next week. One way that this appeal works to support home mission dioceses in the United States is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, because educating each seminarian costs $35-40K per year. Your support is needed for these young men so that they might go back and serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to next week’s appeal.

All graduating high school seniors from St. Thomas the Apostle Parish are eligible to apply. Applications are available at the church office or from Kathy Boscarino. Father Fred writes… This Sunday is often

referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday because the gospel each year is taken from John 10 where Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd. This chapter in John’s gospel has always been important to me in terms of my faith journey. John 10:10 states: I came that you might have life and have it more abundantly. Reading those words a number of years ago caused me to ask God what He wanted me to do with my life rather than what I wanted to do with my life. Letting God be in control changes everything. This Sunday we also pray for vocations. While the word “vocation” often brings to mind those called to religious or priestly lives, we all have a vocation. We received the call to follow Christ when we were baptized. It is a call to be holy as God is holy. It is a call to let Christ be the Lord of our lives so that we could experience life in abundance. During this season of Easter as we read the Acts of the Apostles, we hear about the lives of the early disciples who followed Christ and their challenges of following Christ. This week Paul and Barnabas will experience rejection as they proclaim the Good News message. But instead of becoming discouraged, they go to another city in order to continue living out their vocation. As we draw nearer to Pentecost Sunday when we celebrate our commissioning by Christ to be His ambassadors, let me share a couple of references to the vocation of the laity. The Catechism states, By reason of their special vocation it belongs to the laity to seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to God's will.... It pertains to them in a special way so to illuminate and order all temporal things with which they are closely associated that these may always be effected and grow according to Christ and maybe to the glory of the Creator and Redeemer. [898] Saint John Paul II wrote in his document, Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful People: At this moment the lay faithful, in virtue of their participation in the prophetic mission of Christ, are fully part of this work of the Church. Their responsibility, in particular, is to testify how the Christian faith constitutes the only fully valid response-consciously perceived and stated by all in varying degrees-to the problems and hopes that life poses to every person and society. This will be possible if the lay faithful will know how to overcome in themselves the separation of the Gospel from life, to again take up in their daily activities in family, work and society, an in-tegrated approach to life that is fully brought about by the inspiration and strength of the Gospel. [34] As Mass ends today, we will be reminded about our vocations: Go in peace to announce the Gospel, the Good News of the Lord.

Libro del Éxodo, Evangelio de San Juan y Libro del Apocalipsis El Proyecto de Estudios Bíblicos estará ofreciendo los siguientes libros del Exodo, San Juan y Apocalipsis en la parroquia de San Ambrosio en Houston, TX. Estos cursos de Estudio Bíblico fueron diseñados como seguimiento para aquellas personas que han tenido algún tipo de formación básica teológica ya sea a través del programa de Formación para el Ministerio Cristiano o algún curso bíblico impartido en la parroquia. Palabras del Padre Fred… Este domingo se refiere a menudo como domingo del buen pastor porque el Evangelio cada año se toma de Juan 10, donde Jesús describe a sí mismo como el buen pastor. Este capítulo en el Evangelio de Juan siempre ha sido importante para mí en términos de mi camino de mi fe. John 10:10 declara: Yo he venido para que tengan vida y la tengan en abundancia. Leyendo esas palabras hace varios años me hizo pedirle a Dios que era lo que él quería hacer con mi vida en el lugar de lo que yo quería hacer con mi vida. Dejar a Dios que este en control cambia todas las cosas. Este domingo también oramos por las vocaciones. Mientras que la palabra "vocación" a menudo trae a la mente aquellos llamados a la vida religiosa o sacerdotal, todos tenemos una vocación. Hemos recibido el llamado de seguir a Cristo cuando fuimos bautizados. Es un llamado a ser santos como Dios es santo. Es un llamado de dejar que Cristo sea el Señor de nuestras vidas para que podamos experimentar la vida en abundancia. Durante esta temporada de Pascua mientras leemos los hechos de los apóstoles, oímos hablar de la vida de los primeros discípulos que siguieron a Cristo y sus retos en seguir a Cristo. Esta semana Paul y Barnabas van a experimentar rechazo al proclamar el mensaje de las buenas nuevas. Pero en lugar de desanimarse, se van a otra ciudad para continuar viviendo su vocación. Al acercarnos al domingo de Pentecostés cuando celebramos nuestra puesta en marcha por Cristo para ser sus embajadores, quiero compartir un par de referencias a la vocación de los laicos. En el catecismo [898]: " Los laicos tienen como vocación propia el buscar el Reino de Dios ocupándose de las realidades temporales y ordenándolas según Dios [...] A ellos de manera especial corresponde iluminar y ordenar todas las realidades temporales, a las que están estrechamente unidos, de tal manera que éstas lleguen a ser según Cristo, se desarrollen y sean para alabanza del Creador y Redentor.” Santo John Paul II escribió en su documento Lay members of Christ’s Faithful People: “Los fieles laicos —debido a su participación en el oficio profético de Cristo— están plenamente implicados en esta tarea de la Iglesia. En concreto, les corresponde testificar cómo la fe cristiana —más o menos conscientemente percibida e invocada por todos— constituye la única respuesta plenamente válida a los problemas y expectativas que la vida plantea a cada hombre y a cada sociedad. Esto será posible si los fieles laicos saben superar en ellos mismos la fractura entre el Evangelio y la vida, recomponiendo en su vida familiar cotidiana, en el trabajo y en la sociedad, esa unidad de vida que en el Evangelio encuentra inspiración y fuerza para realizarse en plenitud.” Al terminarse la misa hoy, se nos recuerda sobre nuestras vocaciones: Ve en paz a anunciar el Evangelio, la Buena Nueva del Señor.
