Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driv- ing schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some reli- gious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For in- stance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

St. Thomas is preparing food for the “Table” at the Presbyterian Church every third Thursday of each month. We hope you will use the sign-up sheet so we know what food you bring and who the volunteer helpers will be on that Thursday. We need potatoes, carrots, ham, green beans, and milk. The sign-up sheet for the food is on the “Table” board and a half barrel marked “Table” underneath where you can put food the Sunday before. This is on the NW corner of the Hall.

CCD NEWS

Lately, the readings have been calling us to spiritually prepare ourselves. I have been talking to vari-ous children and asking them how are they doing with the beginning of the school year. Some stu-dents are happy and excited, while others are not. Certainly change is sometimes not easy for every-one and I can understand that. Here, at St. Thomas, we are excited to begin the new religious educa-tion program this coming week. I wanted to take the time to thank our teachers and volunteers for dedicating the time and talents to teach our children our Catholic faith. Of course, I am hoping that the parents will help us with their children: bring them to church, be involved in the religious educa-tion classes and help their children learn their prayers. Please pray for all those students, teachers and volunteers in our religious education program and our parish so that all of us might continue to grow in our own spiritually and in the grace of God. May God continue to bless you and our parish of St. Thomas, Fr. Abel

Gospel: Luke 14:25-33

Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them, “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’ Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thou-sand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms. In the same way, anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disci-ple.”
