HOW GOD INTENDS US TO LIVE Today’s readings are again directed to believers, communities of faith. As in last week’s reading, Amos confronts us with a condemnation of those whose lives are focused on pleasure and self-absorption. The psalm contrasts that focus with the Lord’s—justice for the oppressed; food the hungry; freedom for captives; sight to the blind; raising of those who are bowed down; loving the just; protecting strangers, orphans, and the wid-ow; and by doing so, thwarting the way of the wicked. Timothy urges the pursuit of righteous-ness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentle-ness. Luke tells the familiar tale of the wealthy man and the poor beggar at his doorstep, who experience life very differently in this world and in the next. We are once again being given clear indications about how God intends for us to live our lives.

PRAYER GROUP

We will have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Friday, October 4th, from 9am to 9pm. Mass will be cele-brated at 12pm. Please come and join us for Adoration on this First Friday. We

invite you to sign up for an hour of adoration during the 12 hours. The sign-up sheet is on the parish bulletin board in the church hall. Please consider signing up for an hour to ensure we have every hour covered, and hopefully more than one person per hour can come.

Napa’s annual LIFE CHAIN is next Sunday, October 6th, from 2 to 3 pm at Jefferson and Trancas Streets. Pick up signs at northwest corner and hold sign to oncoming traffic as you pray to

save babies in the womb. Remember that since sadly our beloved country legalized abortion in 1973, 60 million children have been killed. Prayer is working as abortions decrease but much more is needed as now some work to kill outright babies that survive an abortion. Come and bring family and friends. God is calling us. Take home the cards being handed out after Mass at the doors. Information: call 226-1562

LIFE CHAIN

Our parish patron saint is St. Thomas, but since my arrival there is not much that says that St. Thomas is our patron saint. Last weekend I placed a statue of St. Thomas in our church to honor our patron saint. I called him “little Saint Thomas” because is twelve inches tall. I also ordered a print of an icon of St. Thomas that will be more visible by everyone to be placed in the church. Also, I have noticed lately that people are doing “donuts” in our parking lot, racing go-karts and even parking overnight on the weekends. People have even blocked the main entrance of our parking lots. I know that parking in our area is very difficult and I sympathy with our neighbors, unfortunately we have to take care of our parking lot. We have ordered some signs that states that our parking lot is for church services only and will be placed in our parking lot as soon as they arrive. I Thank your for constant support of our parish.

In remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, we will have the “Blessing of the Animals”. Please join us and bring your pets for a blessing on Sat-urday, October 5th at 11:30a.m.

En la Iglesia de Santo Tomás tene-mos la Adoración del Santísimo Sa-cramento el viernes 4 de octubre de 9am a 9pm. El Santísimo Sacramen-to estará expuesto en la custodia en el altar para Adoración y oración hasta las 10pm y la misa se celebrará a las 12pm en Ingles. Por favor venga

y acompáñenos para la Adoración en este primer viernes. Invitamos que personas se registren para una Hora Santa. La hoja de inscripción está en el tablero de anuncios en el salón de la iglesia. Considere inscribirse durante una hora para asegurarse de que tengamos por lo menos un adorador por hora, y si es posible más de una persona por hora.

El santo patrón de nuestra parroquia es Santo Tomás, pero desde mi llegada he notado que no hay mucho que diga que Santo Tomás es nuestro santo patrón. El fin de semana pasado puse una estatua de Santo Tomás en nuestra iglesia para honrar a nuestro santo patrón. Lo llamé "pequeño Santo To-más" porque mide doce pulgadas de alto. También ordene un cuadro de un icono de Santo Tomás que será más visible para todos para ser colocado en la iglesia. Además, últimamente me he dado cuenta de que las personas hacen "donas" en nuestro estaciona-miento, compiten en carros de juego e incluso se estacionan durante la noche los fines de semana. La gente incluso ha bloqueado la entrada principal de nuestros estacionamientos. Sé que estacionar en nuestra área es muy difícil y me compadezco de nuestros vecinos, desafortunadamente tenemos que cuidar nuestro estacionamiento. Hemos ordenado algunos letreros que indican que nuestro estacio-namiento es solo para servicios de la iglesia y se colocarán en nuestro estacionamiento tan pronto como lleguen. La LIFE CHAIN (CADENA POR LA VIDA) anual de Napa es el próximo domingo 6 de octubre de 2 a 3 pm en las calles Jefferson y Trancas. Recoja letreros en la esquina noroeste y mantenga el le-trero en el tráfico que se aproxima mientras reza para salvar a los bebés en el útero. Recuerde que desde que nuestro querido país legalizó el aborto en 1973, 60 millones de niños han sido asesina-dos. La oración está funcionando a medida que disminuyen los abortos, pero se necesita mucho más, ya que ahora algunos trabajan para matar a los bebés que sobreviven a un aborto. Ven y trae familia y amigos. Dios nos esta llamando.

CADENA POR LA VIDA Se les pide a todos los que estén enfermos, en silla de ruedas, o que no puedan caminar fácil-mente y quieran recibir la comunión en la Misa, favor de sentarse en las primeras bancas de la iglesia y darnos a saber, antes de la misa, que les gustaría recibir la comunión para estar seguros de que vayan a recibir la comunión. Jesus said to the Pharisees: "There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And ly-ing at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.' Abraham re-plied, 'My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Laza-rus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.' He said, 'Then I beg you, father, send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.' But Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.' He said, 'Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' Then Abra-ham said, 'If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.'"

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los fariseos: "Había un hombre rico, que se vestía de púrpura y telas finas y banqueteaba espléndidamente ca-da día. Y un mendigo, llamado Lázaro, yacía a la entrada de su casa, cubierto de llagas y ansiando llenarse con las sobras que caían de la mesa del rico. Y hasta los perros se acercaban a lamerle las llagas. Sucedió, pues, que murió el mendigo y los ángeles lo llevaron al seno de Abraham. Mu-rió también el rico y lo enterraron. Estaba éste en el lugar de castigo, en medio de tormentos, cuando levantó los ojos y vio a lo lejos a Abraham y a Lázaro junto a él. Entonces gritó: 'Padre Abraham, ten piedad de mí. Manda a Lá-zaro que moje en agua la punta de su dedo y me refresque la lengua, porque me torturan estas llamas'. Pero Abraham le contestó: 'Hijo, recuer-da que en tu vida recibiste bienes y Lázaro, en cambio, males. Por eso él goza ahora de consue-lo, mientras que tú sufres tormentos. Además, entre ustedes y nosotros se abre un abismo in-menso, que nadie puede cruzar, ni hacia allá ni hacia acá'. El rico insistió: 'Te ruego, entonces, padre Abraham, que mandes a Lázaro a mi casa, pues me quedan allá cinco hermanos, para que les advierta y no acaben también ellos en este lugar de tormentos'. Abraham le dijo: 'Tienen a Moisés y a los profetas; que los escuchen'. Pero el rico replicó: 'No, padre Abraham. Si un muer-to va a decírselo, entonces sí se arrepentirán'. Abraham repuso: 'Si no escuchan a Moisés y a los profetas, no harán caso, ni aunque resucite un muerto'".
